February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Everyone in this office goes above and beyond. Not only are they very accommodating, they really care. They are Upfront and honest, comforting and provide gentle care. They also went out of their way to make sure I found a oral surgeon that accepted my insurance, and was able to be serviced same day. Thank you all!!! Continue to be awesome.

Had a tooth that wasn't bothering me that the dentist told me I needed to have the old filling replaced. Since the New filling was placed 4 weeks prior I have had sensitivity and soreness. Now I'm told that I need either the tooth pulled or a root canal. I had to pay up front and now I get a bill for adjusted insurance and I'm stuck with the problem of having a root canal or a tooth pulled. When the tooth wasn't bothering me at all. Very disappointed, will have trouble using this dentist again. Did not bother the dentist one little bit.

I was told that I had to have $1600. Out of pocket work done on my teeth. I received a second opinion. Was told nothing wrong. I now have a new dentist. Don't be afraid to get a second opinion.

I have a history of poor dental interventions during my term of military service. I decided after the year we all have had beginning in 2020 (smile), that changes were needed. I stopped by the Mortenson's in Simpsonville today for a plan of corrective action. From the front desk, to the Doctor, the hygienist, the tech, well, just everyone, I was treated with respect, gentleness, and utter competence. I will trust my dental future to this office because they understood the level of phobia and met me at that point. Good people. Good hands. They deserve more stars but 5 was the max.
