February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I have been going to Mortenson Family Dental for almost 10 yrs, and the staff has been amazing every time. They take the time to know all of their patients by name, and that means a lot. Dr. Mary is an absolute sweetheart!! She is professional and humble. I highly recommend her.

This is the best dentist ever. Hands down! No debate. They our Kind, Welcoming Knowledgeable of their jobs. They get you in and out. You always feel taken care of when you leave. Mortenson Family Dental Buechel exceeded my expectations. For many years I had been averse to having dental procedures, because of early childhood experiences. Mary Beth Howell performed exceptionally with my dental procedures. I did not experience any discomfort, and she and her team were caring, considerate of my initial apprehension, professional, informative, and friendly. Expert service, staff, dentist, and care. Three fillings, a cosmetic composite on the front from a prior chipped tooth, and a cleaning. I could not be happier. I have complete confidence and trust in Dr. Mari and her team.

I bought a partial at the beginning of the pandemic. The cost was near 4000. It was sent back to the lab twice. 6 months ago i started noticing that eating with the teeth in grinded my teeth down. I brushed my teeth and a tooth broke of my partial and today I went to yawn and three more broke off my partial. They said warranty is a year which is ridiculous. So here i am with no front teeth and my money and time was wasted. All the prices are inflated and they overprice the insurance companies. They don't care about people. I will be contacting The American Dental Association regarding their cheaply made products. I was not informed of the 1 year warranty at time of service. The pandemic caused a shut down for almost a year anyways so either way I got ripped off.Thanks for not returning my phone calls. Christy Jackson
