February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I had a great experience at Mortenson today. I had no wait time and the hygienist was very thorough and informative. Dr. Quintero is very kind and personable and answered any and all questions and concerns I had. The office is newly renovated and looks great!

Both Alyssa and Dr. Sharma provided excellent care! Alyssa was very attentive and patient with me while she readjusted my bite for my x-rays multiple times to ensure she had the best picture. Dr. Sharma was incredibly kind and exemplified their motto of a "judgement free zone" as she discussed my long overdue concerns and formulated a treatment plan to address them. 12/10 would recommend!

Had to confirm my appointment 3 separate times and not once was it mentioned they don't take my insurance even though the first google option no matter what I phrase it, is this practice. Waited 2 weeks for nothing.

I had scheduled a routine cleaning a few months out and suddenly had a chipped molar last night. I called this morning and Megan was super helpful and friendly and got me worked in with Dr. Quintero who was awesome! They evaluated the issue, gave me an estimate and future plan and did a filling in about an hour total time. I was even allowed to bring my 3.5 year old for whom I didn't have child care. She did great and the staff were friendly and professional and interacted with her when possible also. Great family environment and very excellent service! My husband goes here too ever since I gave it my glowing reviews.
