February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I'll preface this by saying....I'm a big baby when it comes to going to the dentist, but this practice is absolutely wonderful! Doctors and staff really listen to your concerns, schedule appointments convenient for you, and explain things in a way you can understand

Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff you can tell they care about their patients they know everyone's story, I had my first appointment today and I will be going back here from now on. I've moved a few times in my life and had maybe 5 different dentists, this office sticks out at the top. Amy was an absolute awesome staff member. 10/10 highly recommend! (So was the dentist I'm just terrible with names) It's rare when you can say you had a great time at the dentists.

My dental hygienist, Nikki, was phenomenal! I have major anxiety when it comes to the dentist and my experience was wonderful thanks to Nikki and Dr. Meyer. You have to go see them!

I absolutely loved my experience at Mortenson's! Megan, Brooklyn and Dr. Meyer were very professional and attentive to my needs! They went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and satisfied! Dr. Meyer was so nice and friendly; I am definitely going back! The office staff was courteous, and I didn't have to wait long to be seen. A+

Scheduled to have a cleaning several months ago. Finally got in for said cleaning. Cleaning didn't happen because they wanted to do a consultation and x-rays. Not sure why I needed another one after visiting another mortenson location. They then wanted to schedule my cleaning out another few months. I've had multiple issues with Mortenson at different locations. The staff is always genuinely nice but it seems like the business as a whole suffers. Expectations we're not met when scheduling the appointment. Which now has resulted in my cleanings being delayed for more than 6+ months which ultimately cost me more money. This current issue stemmed from the last time their company did this. When they had scheduling/ expectation issues at the Corydon location. But here we are again going through the same fiasco.
