February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Dr. Patel and crew are the absolute most patient and caring group of dental professionals I've ever encountered. I'm a 46 year old that has had reservations about the dentist due to pay trauma from my childhood dentist. They talk and walk me through everything, every x-ray, every procedure and I'm so fearful. I will continue to recommend this practice to my family, friends, and strangers!

Very, very pleasant staff who do their best to help you understand what is going on with you. Clean facility and knowledgeable employees. Recently moved from another state and I am certainly glad that I chose Mortenson to be the dentist office for my family.

I went to their office to get my teeth cleaned. After the cleaning, they did my feeling. Then, I developed some painful sensitivity on one of my molars because they drilled it so deep. I went back to their office. She drilled it more and put another feeling. The sensitivity got worse and couldn't bear the pain. I went back and she said my tooth looks good and said I need a root canal to save it. They brought me their prices and I declined the root canal. Because it was too expensive and couldn't afford it. I ended up losing my tooth. When I asked the dentist why I had this issue she said she doesn't know when she is the one that made it worse. I will never go back to their office nor recommend them to anyone that I know. I lost my tooth because they drilled it too deep and reached the nerve. And they were quick to ask me to get a root canal. And went there 3 times to get a filling for my other tooth. Their nurse kept doing it wrong.

They messed up my teeth I was getting a cavity filled they filled it an filed it down an filed it to much went back to get it checked out they filed down more an said oh it might hurt cause it's not even an it still hurts more than before I went up there

I had a new patient appointment today and thought I was going to get my routine teeth cleaning at the same time. I was disappointed to learn that I would need to schedule a subsequent appointment for the cleaning. This was not shared with me when I scheduled today's appointment. Unfortunately, the next availability for teeth cleaning is two months later. Mortenson Family Dental should do a better job of communicating their new patient appointment scheduling process to all patients before the first appointment so they are given the opportunity to schedule both appointments at the same time.
