February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I arrived on time for my appointment then waited for an hour, sitting by myself in an exam room. I got up, when to the front desk to find out what the story was. They said they are behind and they are calling people to cancel appointments. But they didn't bother to tell me. They told me that it will be another 1 to 2 hours wait for me. I told them if they had mentioned that to me at the start I would have rescheduled. Apparently, their plan was to let me sit in the exam room by myself for 3 hours and not tell me about the wait.

I was a little timid about going to my appt and how my first experience would be. I expect the worst from the reviews, but actually experience the total opposite from a timely profession, quality of service. I must say I am looking forward to my next appointment. There's nothing like friendly professional service of quality on. Someone is working on your teeth.

Diana at the desk is so sweet and helpful! All of the people at this location are fantastic! They take great care of you and are honest & polite. I wouldn't chose a different dentist to go to. They even accept most insurances!

I was very pleased with how friendly the staff was, and how they were working diligently to get me out on time. I am also always freezing and LOVED that they had blankets. Def recommend this office!!

I'm very glad I made the appointment at this location. Everyone was really compassionate, understanding and did their very best to make this as comfortable as possible for me. They were able to extract my decaying tooth and really went above and beyond for me to help relieve my pain and discomfort. Heroes without capes!!!

I do like Mortensen Dental, however at the Forest Green office, I think the head dentist could be more personable with patients versus just coming in saying hi and start messing with my teeth. Their dental hygienist are great and help ease the process.
