February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Everyone there was very helpful, they worked very hard at making it an enjoyable experience. They told me what I needed in dental care and worked very hard on helping me with the financial part in getting this work done. I would recommend them very highly.

Loved the experience! My teeth weren't in the best shape and they didn't try to shame me like other dentists habe in the past. We are just working on a plan to fix everything.

The staff here is super friendly, helpful and smart. Very personable too. They were so good with my three year old daughter. Sandra is awesome! She even ran out to my car, after the appointment, to give me helpful information about my insurance concerns. It's always clean there and I've never had to wait long. They deserve more than five stars!

I have had dental anxiety ever since I had a bunch of work done on my teeth when I was little. Mortensen Family Dental has the best hygienists, and dentist EVER! They are so gentle and treat me with care every visit. I feel comfortable sitting in their chair, knowing they won't hurt me, and are going to do a great job on my teeth. I don't trust anyone else with my dental care/work. If your asking yourself should you make an appointment, the answer is YES!

Took our 4 and 5 year old for their first dental visits today and I was very nervous for them. We were called back quick and Sandra was absolutely AMAZING! She explained everything and showed my kids there was nothing to be scared of and they both did great! Will be bringing my kids back for every appointment! THANKS SANDRA!!!!

First place in a long time that they helped easy my worries and did not try to unnecessary treatment or what Sedona teeth pulling ( like my past Dentist). Sandra helped me a few months back and today did my cleaning. . I recommend checking these folks out

I've had 2 deep cleanings in my life and both were horrible (over 8 shots to numb my gums both times). Sandra at Mortenson Dental just did a deep cleaning the other day. I have been DREADING it since I made the appointment. She was fantastic!! No numbing needed. She went deep below my gum line into the deep pockets I have due to gum infection/disease. I felt MINOR discomfort twice.. nowhere near the prior experience at another dental office. If you need anything, go there! Best dental experience I've had in my 64 years!

Normally I have anxiety when i visit the dentist, but not today. This place is amazing! You feel welcomed as soon as you walk in the door. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Big kudos to Sandra. She made me feel so comfortable and at ease. Step by step she explained my procedures in a way I could understand instead of talking dental terminology jibberish. I'm definitely going back.

We were in & out! I can't remember the hygienists name that worked with my son, but she was great. Very personable. My son is usually very nervous going to the dentist but he felt very comfortable and was talking about "how nice the lady was" when he was all finished.
