February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I use to be a dental assistant, so I am very picky when it comes to my dentistry. I have been going here for several years and have always had a great experience. Lynley RDH and Dr Barrington always do an amazing job! The cleanliness, chair side manner, and dental practice of this office is top notch. I highly recommend!

The staff at this Frankfort location are absolutely amazing! They are polite, flexible and were able to alleviate my son's high anxiety about dentist visits. The place was also very clean. I would definitely recommend them to anyone and everyone!

Dr. B and the whole MFDC family are the absolute best! I've never had a bad experience in all the years I've been a patient. Front office, back office, hygienists, aides, and Dr. B have always made it clear that the customer comes first. I highly recommend them to family and friends, and to whomever reads this review.

My husband went here because he had gum pain. The hygienist was frustrated and had an attitude because he didn't want to swish with an alcohol based mouth rinse because of the sensitivity. He was polite about it also and she took her frustration out on his gum and stabbed the gum during cleaning. It bled, became infected and they gave him antibiotics. Would not hold her accountable for her actions. It has been a month and the gum sensitivity turned into a much bigger problem. They were rude, dismissive and crude. We ended up going to another dental office where he was treated with the respect he deserves. He is unable to speak thanks to these horrible people. You are lucky we didn't sue!
