February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

We had a wonderful experience with Sandra. My little one was a bit scared an uneasy about getting her teeth cleaned but Sandra was so patient with her and told her magical stories to ease her worry. Sandra is a wonderful person and an excellent hygienist. We will recommend Mortenson family dental to everyone we know.

My experience with Sandra as my dental hygienist and meeting Dr, Kandel was wonderful! I'll no longer dread going to see a dentist, Sandra was thorough yet gentle as she cleaned my teeth. The whole office atmosphere was so friendly, cheerful, and nice and clean. Highly recommend.

Everyone was extremely kind and professional. Dr. Kandel was great and the assistant went overboard to make sure I was comfortable. The tech even offered to take a shorter lunch so she could clean my teeth then due to my upcoming surgery. I definitely would recommend Mortenson Family Dental to everyone.

I've had nothing but a difficult time reaching the front desk. The phone rolls over to people who are kind but can't do anything to help you. I was told I needed a wisdom tooth removed. The place I was referred to asked for xray images and I had asked mortenson family dental to send it THREE times and I was told it was sent but the oral surgeon never received them. I may need to cancel further appointments. Very disappointed with their lack of communication.

I had to have fillings in my front teeth which made me nervous about working on them. Elizabeth kandel did an excellent job in drilling and making sure all that needed to be removed was done . She then had Becky put the new fillings in. The match was perfect and you can't you can't even see that there were fillings in my teeth. They took their time to make sure it was perfect. I would highly recommend them to everyone. Thank you Elizabeth and Becky for the great job.
