February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.

Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.

While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Let me start with I am terrified of going to the dentist. I have never felt more at ease at an office EVER. The staff from the moment I walked in made me feel very relaxed and did whatever they could to ease my fears. Even going so far as to move the sharps container from my exam room since I am scared of needles. Dr. Z explained everything very clearly and not condescending. I left the office feeling much better and even cried when I got in the parking lot from the relief. Will send everyone I know to the office.

Today we show up for my son's first appointment that had been scheduled for weeks. Due to a change in insurance we had to find a new dentist and my son was due for a cleaning. We had been in contact with the office several times and completed all paperwork. We arrive 30 mins early, complete remaining paperwork and wait. The front desk person chats with my son and I and she was very nice. They were running behind but it was nothing major. Once they took my son back she said she wanted to do X-rays. She then sends him to room two, then comes out to tell me they can not do an exam or cleaning because he has braces. I was shocked, considering this is my third child with braces and never have I been told a dentist can't do an exam or cleaning. Keep in mind he has had several cleanings with braces at his former office. She stated he had to go to his orthodontist have his wires removed come back have a cleaning and exam then return to the orthodontist. I questioned this as I knew this is not standard. She insisted this is right. I call my sons orthodontist who confirmed this is in no way standard and was actually shocked by this. This visit cost me time off work, my son to take time from school. I called three other dentist in the area to see who had openings as my son is now going to be over due for a cleaning and explained what happened and NONE of them said this was normal or standard practice. Unless there is a procedure needed there is zero reason to remove wires for an exam or cleaning. So beware do not go to this practice if you or your child have braces. I found another dentist who was more than happy to see my child with braces to do a cleaning and basic exam. This should be zero stars but that's not an option.

UPDATE: I was correct in my prediction! My appointment for tomorrow got cancelled again and they have no idea when they'll be able to schedule again. I was under the impression you were supposed to go to the dentist every six months but this office is making it increasingly difficult. I just have to laugh about it at this point, but I feel awful for others who have been duped by Mortenson's financially. I had never had issues with this office until this past year (which is coincidentally how long I've been trying to get an appointment). A few years ago, this place was great, but it's insufferable now. ORIGINAL: They keep rescheduling my appointment, meaning that I have to wait months and months to be seen. I had one in November, then it was rescheduled to December, and now it's March because they scheduled someone else for a treatment the morning I was supposed to go in. Maybe don't schedule people for cleanings if you can't actually fit them in. I'll be looking for another office in-network, because this is probably going to happen again, knowing them.

Not only did it it take almost 6 months to even get an appointment they rescheduled my appointment 2 times then when I finally after a almost a year got in they called me the day before my appointment and said no one's going to be in to take care of me when I have my appointment. Terrible experience.

A little over a year ago I recommended a family member get her dentures done here because we had a fairly good experience with this office. We received an estimate and paid for her tooth removal, temporary dentures and relining for permanent dentures. Four dentists, many appointments and a year of treatment later trying to get her dentures to fit correctly. She was told "we can't do anything but start over" and it would cost her an additional $2,000 . Never having accomplished providing her with dentures that she was able to wear comfortably, why should we believe that paying an additional $2,000 would allow them to accomplish the original goal? I will never recommend this office to anyone again and my next call is to the better business bureau.

I was excited about finally getting my dental issues fixed. After many trips, treatments and doctor changes...I still have not received a denture that fits comfortably! After a year I still have pain and no comfortable denture to wear, now I am being asked for an additional $2,000 to accomplish what I have already paid the for... I am on a fixed budget and can't afford to pay twice for the same services!

All of the people we encountered at this office were very kind and nice. The doctor was very kind also and explained everything you needed to know. Jocelyn was so helpful with trying to get everything together for us to visit. And she was also very good with helping us with our insurance.

Rude staff. They push extra treatments. I was there for two hours for a cleaning. Over an hour was in chair waiting. All I got was sale pitches. Major waste of my time.

I had a cleaning appointment scheduled for August 2021, that I schedule in February of 2021. They called a few days before and told me they didn't have a hygienist so had to reschedule. Rescheduled for February 2022. Received a message today that they still don't have a hygienist and have to reschedule again. I am certainly understanding and flexible with uncontrollable situations that are pandemic related. However, the first staffing issue in August was a planned leave that I know they were well aware of when I was there in February of 2021 because they told me about it when I was in the office, and now this staffing issue (according to the office staff) is due to a newly hired hygienist just not showing up. So clearly neither are pandemic related. I asked if they could help me find another appointment at another office and they said you can come in tomorrow morning because we just had a cancellation. I can't drop all other commitments to meet their schedule because they can't manage their staffing appropriately. I told them I couldn't make that time that so they told me to call the 800 number and that I can always come back to them once they are fully staffed. Um, no. For as many times as they have rescheduled now, and clearly for others as well based on recent reviews, the LEAST they can do is help to find a comparable appointment in another office. I called to see about an appointment at another office and their next available appointment was more than two months out. It's a simple cleaning, it shouldn't be this complicated. I've had great visits with them previously but will be looking for another dentist entirely now. They could be the best dental office in the world but what good does that do if they can't follow through with appointments that they schedule?

As per the first few times visiting them I was treated with respect and care. And of course they found something else that needed to be fixed.
