When I was a teenager, my teeth were a mess! I was given the gift of a nice smile from my orthodontist who made the process enjoyable as well. That is when I decided to be an orthodontist and share the same gift I was given. It must be working, as I now have several former patients who are now in dental school.
I received a Bachelor of Science degree in the honors program at the University of Alabama and continued on to attended the University of Alabama School of Dentistry where I received a Master of Science in Orthodontics. I was the first resident ever in the school of dentistry to be awarded a grant from the National Institute of Health to pursue research while in residency. I also spent an additional year completing an oral and maxillofacial surgical fellowship. During this time, I lectured nationally and internationally on my research and was recognized by the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as the most significant researcher of the year. Soon after setting up private practice in Birmingham, I was accepted in a two year program along with a select number of leading orthodontists from around the world to continue my studies in functional occlusion at the Roth Williams Center in California. Of course, education never stops if you want to be the best. I currently attend many hours of continuing education every year to evaluate new technology and treatment options to benefit my patients.
I am blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart. While we have three wonderful kids of our own, I feel as if I am further blessed to have the extended family of my patients. Every day that I get to spend with my patients is a gift, and I try to treat it as such. When I am not in the office, I am usually traversing Shelby County attending soccer games, tennis matches, or other school or church functions for my kids. I also enjoy wakeboarding and water sports, playing golf, hunting, and exercising.
Braces and orthodontic treatment are not all the same. Braces are only the tool to move teeth; the exact position of teeth makes a huge difference in your smile, lip posture, profile, and function. Every patient is different and should receive individualized treatment to provide the best cosmetic and functional results! While it has become more common to meet the orthodontist once and rush into treatment as a next step, I take great pride in spending time getting to know my patients and collecting the proper information to accurately diagnose any issues and provide the best options specific to their situation.
