Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for placement of dental implants.

With bone grafting, we now have the opportunity to not only replace bone where it is missing, but also the ability to promote new bone growth in that location! This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and esthetic appearance.

Autogenous bone grafts, also known as autografts, are made from your own bone, taken from somewhere else in the body. The bone is typically harvested from the chin, jaw, lower leg bone, hip, or the skull. Autogenous bone grafts are advantageous in that the graft material is live bone, meaning it contains living cellular elements that enhance bone growth.

However, one downside to the autograft is that it requires a second procedure to harvest bone from elsewhere in the body. Depending on your condition, a second procedure may not be in your best interest.

Allogenic bone, or allograft, is dead bone harvested from a cadaver, then processed using a freeze-dry method to extract the water via a vacuum. Unlike autogenous bone, allogenic bone cannot produce new bone on its own. Rather, it serves as a framework or scaffold over which bone from the surrounding bony walls can grow to fill the defect or void.

Xenogenic bone is derived from non-living bone of another species, usually a cow. The bone is processed at very high temperatures to avoid the potential for immune rejection and contamination. Like allogenic grafts, xenogenic grafts serve as a framework for bone from the surrounding area to grow and fill the void.

Both allogenic and xenogenic bone grafting are advantageous in that they do not require a second procedure to harvest your own bone, as with autografts. However, because these options lack autografts bone-forming properties, bone regeneration may take longer than with autografts, with a less predictable outcome.

This product is processed allograft bone, containing collagen, proteins, and growth factors that are extracted from the allograft bone. It is available in the form of powder, putty, chips, or as a gel that can be injected through a syringe.

Graft composites consist of other bone graft materials and growth factors to achieve the benefits of a variety of substances. Some combinations may include: collagen/ceramic composite, which closely resembles the composition of natural bone, DBM combined with bone marrow cells, which aid in the growth of new bone, or a collagen/ceramic/autograft composite.

Synthetic materials also have the advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest bone, reducing risk and pain. Each bone grafting option has its own risks and benefits. Dr. Sheeran will determine which type of bone graft material is right for you.

The worst oral surgeon I have ever gone to. Went for a consultation to get two teeth pulled and ended up getting implants to replace the missing teeth. Two implants at 6000 and still billed me for his rip off consultation price of over 300. A few months later I had the implants inserted . One week later I went back and told him I felt like something was wrong, I was still having pain and I felt like i was rejecting the implant. This wacko assured me that everything looked great!!! Well 4 weeks later as I was talking at work the implant flew out of my mouth . Long story short, I asked for a partial reimbursement since it didn't work . Received -0- money back. I went to another dentist, had to pay full price to have a beautiful implant done. Moral to this story DO NOT GO THE DENTIST!!!! He is money hungry guy who is not skilled at what he advertises

All three of my children have had their wisdom teeth removed at this practice. Everything was handled professionally from scheduling to the surgery to follow up and billing. With the instructions and follow up they were given my kids recovered very quickly with no complications. One of them had a small issue that needed to be looked at, if was very easy to find a time to have the Dr. take a look.

I recommend this place to everyone! I got my wisdom teeth taken out this morning and Dr. Sheeren did an excellent job. He's very knowledgeable and very confident. He made me feel comfortable from start to finish. They have a nice and relaxing vibe there and even called to follow up right away. The best part is I'm in no pain at all! Great job and thank you!

No business running a practice......I went to this office twice: for a consultation and a surgical appointment. For the consultation, I arrived on time and was made to wait for an hour past my appointment time to see the dentist. For the surgical appointment, i arrived a few minutes early and was again made to wait, this time for 30 minutes past my appointment time (and I was NPO since midnight in preparation). I asked the receptionist when i would be seen, and she wasn't sure, made no move to check with the doctor, and then took a phone call for 10 minutes. When i was finally shown to the procedure room, i expressed to the nurse that i was dissatisfied at the wait, and got a snappish "sorry" in return. Since it was clear she wasn't going to resolve my customer satisfaction issue, I asked to speak with the dentist before the procedure was started. He came in, i told him the same thing, and he invited me to leave. I don't know if he's a competent dentist or not. I do know that his office doesn't run on time. When taken to task about their lateness and rude behavior toward a patient, he defends the bad behavior and tells the patient to leave. He apparently doesn't understand that the poor experience his staff creates for the patient reflects very badly on him. I have plenty of kids, with plenty of wisdom teeth, and we'll go elsewhere. He doesn't want my business anyway. My advice to shoppers looking for a local surgeon is: go ahead and donate time to sitting and waiting at his office, but if you have a problem with him or his staff, just know up front that he does not care.
