Dr. John F. Monacell was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Arlington, VA. He is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and earned a degree in dentistry from The Medical College of Virginia. He has also completed the prestigious Roth Course of Advanced Orthodontics. At MCV, he was the recipient of a variety of academic awards including the A. D. Williams Award for first in his class. Dr. Monacell received Honorable Mention in the specialty of Orthodontics in the 6th Annual OurHealth Magazine for Richmonds Best Bedside Manner Awards in 2018. He is also honored to receive the Virginia Living Magazine 2018 Top Dentist Award. Dr. Monacell proudly served in the United States Air Force before establishing his private practice in the Sandston community in 1978.
Dr. Monacells commitment to continuing education allows him and his staff to be up to date on the most innovative techniques. The team continues to focus on growth and development, functional jaw orthopedics, facial aesthetics, and adult orthodontic treatment. Dr. Monacell has taught at the Dental School of MCV and has lectured to numerous professional organizations. He is a member of various professional and civic organizations and has served as president of the MCV Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation, two local Rotary Clubs, and founding board member and Chairman of the Chickahominy YMCA. He also serves as an elder at Sandston Presbyterian Church.
Several years ago, Dr. Monacell realized that self ligating braces could be even more efficient if a different-sized archwire was available to fit the brackets. The archwire had to be small enough to fit in the bracket without engaging the clip, or forcing the bracket to accidentally open, and strong enough to work in conjunction with the In-Ovation system to move teeth into their correct position. The accepted wire size at the time was .018 or .020, neither of which were proficient during Phase 2 treatment.
Dr. Monacell researched and ultimately presented a solution: a new archwire needed to be developed in size .022. This size would fill the slot in the bracket and be strong enough to shift teeth with minimal discomfort. It would not engage the clip and would therefore be the perfect solution to Phase 2 treatment with In-Ovation braces. Dr. Monacell presented his research to the Alpern Study Club, the manufacturing body of In-Ovation, and prototypes were created and studied.
Today, the Monacell Archwire .022 system is used exclusively with the In-Ovation self ligating braces system. Dr. Monacells innovation has revolutionized the way In-Ovation is implemented as a Phase 2 product.

Ive had the privilege of working with Dr. Monacell, our patient families, and fellow team members for the past 32 years. During this time, Ive seen hundreds of patients achieve great smiles, and now we are seeing them put their trust in us again by returning with their children and/or grandchildren for their treatment. Its been great to see how over the years Dr. Monacell has kept our practice abreast of the greatest and latest technology available in orthodontics allowing patients to complete their treatment in record time.
Yes, I am Dr. Monacells daughter! I started cleaning the office with my younger sister, Emily, when I was 8 years old. Throughout my high school and college years, I continued to work during the summers doing clerical duties. I have been working full time as the Insurance Coordinator since 2001. In March 2014, I became an aunt to my niece, Brooklyn.
I have been fortunate to work with Dr. Monacell since October 1999. I help new patients get started with their treatment plan. I enjoy seeing the transformations happen while they go through treatment. One of the most rewarding things for me is seeing the finished result and how it has impacted that patient in a positive way. I love my job and working for Dr. Monacell makes it easy.
Since October, 2004, I have been a part of the amazing team at Monacell Orthodontics. As a former patient, I know how satisfying it is to see the end results. I love to have a good time with the patients and make them feel at home because they are like family to me.
As a former intern at Monacell Orthodontics, I have been with Dr. Monacell team since February 2006. I love working here for the reward of seeing our patients grow as well as changing their lives one smile at a time. I also love my co-workers and they are a part of my family. We are an amazing team!
I have recently joined Monacell Orthodontics as a scheduling coordinator. I enjoy meeting new people and am excited to start my journey with the great staff at Monacell Orthodontics. Outside the office, I love working in the yard, gardening, going to the beach and spending time with my husband and two daughters. Originally from Emporia, VA, I love being close to the great shopping in the Richmond area as well as my extended family.

Friday morning 10/12/18, 5am after hurricane Michael hit our area I had to stop my truck in this parking lot due to the gas station along my route having no power. I returned a few hours later to find that the owner of this office had my truck towed, the office as well had no power for me to call and tell them what had happened. I traveled a good ways to a job site close to this building for work and this is how I was treated. I was not even given an opportunity to get my truck before the office owner called the police and demanded my truck to be towed. The police themselves stated they told the owner is was a reason the truck was left and the owner stated they didn't care tow it now. So in the mist of having no power at my own home, losing all the food in my fridge and freezer, paying a 200 tow bill for them to go 8 miles with damage to the front of my truck due to them having to drag it into the flatbed I have yet to hear from the owner. Where is a persons heart these days? Where is the common courtesy with people these days? To say the least the office did not open and my truck was out of the way enough for other drivers to get in and out. I would go as far to say the owner of a business should at the very least give a person a chance to come back for their vehicle before going this far.

Dr. Monacell was my orthodontist when I was a teenager and he is my children's orthodontist now! The staff is amazing and informative. My daughter is excited to start her invisalign treatment in a few weeks.

Wonderful experience!! My daughter started her treatment in 2015& I must say it was the best experience from the beginning of treatment to end. We are so happy with how beautiful her teeth& smile is now!! It's a Great friendly atmosphere with well trained staff!! I start my treatment next week& i am so excited! I highly recommend this place for your ortho treatment!! You won't be disapponted!!

Monacell Orthodontics is the best. They are absolutely amazing. I am so glad I took the leap and decided to get my braces 2 years ago. Today is better sweet as I write this review as I got them off today and I am truly glad I chose them. The offices, the staff and everything was just perfect. They are the best and I am so glad to have met them and glad that I'll still get to see them as my daughter just got her braces on. They are the BEST

My daughter, age 7, has been going to Dr Monacell for almost a year. She has had to have pretty extensive ortho work done but it is totally worth it. The techs at Dr Monacell's are extremely friendly, patient, funny, and kind. They are always able to put my daughter at ease and make the appointments quick and easy. I am so pleased with my overall experience. I am very glad we chose Dr. Monacell's office for our family.

My son started seeing Dr. Monacell when he was 7 years old. Unlike others who we had consulted with Dr. Monacell had a plan for his teeth that did not include pulling permanent teeth! I am very satisfied with the care, the office, the efficiency as well as the treatment. Our appointments are smooth and quick and the staff is wonderful. I look forward to a long relationship with Monacell Orthadontics for both of my kids!
