An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a surgical specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects in the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. Oral surgeons are the only dental specialists who are surgically trained in a hospital-based residency program for a minimum of four years after dental school. They perform a broad spectrum of operations including extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, removal of cysts and tumors, TMJ disorders, and facial trauma. They are also uniquely trained in office-based anesthesia.
A prosthodontist is a specialist in the replacement of missing teeth. They have completed a full-time two-year residency after dental school. Prosthodontists are experts in the fabrication of implant replacement teeth including crowns, overdentures, dentures, and fixed bridges. They focus on delivering cosmetic and functional prosthetic replacement of missing teeth.
