Your dentist may assess that a tooth is beyond repair, and should be removed. Severe tooth decay, gum disease, or facial trauma are all circumstances that can lead a tooth be extracted to prevent further discomfort, pain, and infection. Furthermore, some teeth can become poorly positioned which may necessitate removal.

Tooth loss can lead to problems with your bite, jaw joints, and smile esthetics. We will work with your referring dentist to understand your specific need for a dental extraction. Our team of doctors walk you through each step of the procedure to ensure you always feel comfortable and secure. Additionally, we will make sure to inform you about possible alternatives to tooth extraction including optionsfor replacingyour missing tooth.

Dental extractions are generally straightforward out-patient procedures in which the patient can remain awake, however, increased levels of sedation can be used at the patients request. We will always use local anesthetic to numb your tooth before beginning.

During the tooth removal procedure, you may feel pressure, which is normal. Your comfort is our top priority, so if you feel any discomfort, please let us know right away. Some teeth may require sectioning when they are firmly fixed in the jaw or the root is curved. In this case, the doctor will simply section the tooth into smaller pieces to allow for complete removal. Depending on the procedure, full recovery can take anywhere from days to weeks.

The healing process begins by forming a stable blood clot. A clot forms best by biting down on gauze for 30 minute intervals, evaluating the gauze, and reapplying gauze to the site if some bleeding remains. You may have to cycle through several sets of gauze and pressure to form a non-bleeding clot.

After the clot is had, it is important not to agitate or disturb the clot site. Often we find that suction through straws, drinking, smoking, sharp hard foods, and vigorous swishing dislodge patients clots. To heal and reduce pain as best as possible, we recommend you refrain from these activities for a week. Additionally, vigorous exercise for the first 48 hours should be avoided to keep a stable clot.

We recommend you take plenty of fluids and eat nutritious, soft, foods after the tooth extraction. You can resume your normal dental hygiene after 24 hours around everywhere but the surgical site please do not attempt to clean the surgical site out with anything other than a gentle cleansing of saline water. To make saline water combine teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of water.

Please use pain and antibiotic medications as directed. Feel free to call our office if the medication doesnt seem to be relieving the pain significantly, if your pain gets worse four days or more after the extraction, or you appear to be having an allergic reaction.

Dr Karl Petersen is excellent! My daughter Cheyqnne had 2 teeth removed today and has very high anxiety at the dentist and he was very professional, caring, understanding and made sure that her experience was the best it could be considering the circumstances. I would definitely recommend him going forward. We wish he had his own practice! Thank you !

I was referred here (incorrectly I might add) by my insurance (Ucare + Medicare Connect) for a further evaluation of a mass in my jaw. This mass had been watched by my Dentist for awhile, but due to prior cancers he wanted another set of "eyes" on it to be sure we weren't missing anything. The thought was that I would need surgery to remove it first and afterwards discover what the tumor was. So in September, I arrived for my appt, only to find out that the Cone Beam CT I'd need wouldn't be covered, neither would any surgery I'd potentially have there, again due to the insurance incorrect referral. I was frustrated and upset at the waste of time that my insurance had caused me, not to mention the delay in my needed treatment. Standing there nearly in tears because honestly when you've dealt with cancers, the anxiety and fear of a new one or the return/spread of an old one, is sometimes too much to bear. Thankfully, the kind people at Minnesota Dental Surgery, especially their manager, KaPang Vang LDA, well, did all they could to turn my appt around. She waived ALL fees from my visit and for the CT scan due to my insurances' mistake and the headache it had caused. Wow! What a surprise that was, as you certainly don't run in to that kind of thing very often! Her kindness and empathy impressed me. This was all BEFORE heading in to my consultation to see Dr. Peter Thurnau. Things continued in this same manner there as well. Dr. Thurnau was friendly and skilled. I'd trust him with my teeth and the those of my family any day. Even though he wasn't able to help me during my appt, he did do much to assuage my fears of it being cancer. He also assured me that he would take care of all the phone calls and paper work to get me transitioned over to the U of M School of Dentistry asap.Which he indeed followed through on because I had a call from them and a consultation set up within the next week. So a visit that could've very easily ended within the first 5 mins, in disappointment, frustration, and tears at most other Oral Surgeon offices, actually ended on a happy note and got the job done, despite Ucare + Medicare Connect's mistake. All thanks to the great, hardworking people at Minnesota Dental Surgery. Thanks again KaPang for going out of your way to correct someone else's mistake. I'll definitely be recommending your office to all who cross my path and are in need. :)

Melany and Peter put me at ease about getting my tooth pulled. They were relaxed, kind and reassuring. They were checking with me throughout the procedure and making sure I was not feeling pain. This office helped me get my appointment in a timely manner which was important in my situation. I highly recommend them!

They are amazing, her bedside mannor and his pulling were phenomenal- fast, efficient and wonderfully done with no pain amazed me, not to mention comfortable humor. THANK you two, keep doing what you do so well.

I do not like dentists. Nothing personal. I had a bad experience prior to coming to MDS. Dr. Peter and his Assistant Sommer were both great. Very caring. It was a smoothest xtra ction ever. I wish I could come there for great dental care. Thank you

Not great. Number one, do not come here if you are queer/trans/nonbinary. I politely corrected my nurse several times and did not try to use my pronouns ONCE, so if like me you just leave your whole body when that happens and can't even absorb what people are saying anymore just know this place is not queer or trans friendly. They also had some rude things to say about how unusual my partner's colorful femme alighned pants were. With that level of inconsideration and disregard I don't feel confident that they won't treat me differently than other patients. I also came in at the same time as the staff and they were talking about how much they didn't want to be there. Most staff were not using; They have some construction mess but it's also all over the floors, like where they could have easily just vacuumed and instead it's just a wreck. This place is not welcoming or reassuring. It was very clear from the attitude of the nurse that she just was not willing to acknowledge non-binary or trans folks AT ALL. Which is totally unacceptable behavior from a medical professional that is just supposed to practice unbiased medical care. That's a legal protection. Like it or not it's part of the job. It was dehumanizing to me. Unfortunately I would avoid this place.

Dr. Peter Thurnau removed my son's wisdom teeth in Aug 2022. From the initial phone call to discharge, 100% positive experience. Peter is a top tier professional who went out of his way to ensure that my son was taken care of. He not only answered all of our questions, but followed up to make sure we were comfortable. I can't say enough about how great he was, would recommend to anyone who is looking for a true compassionate professional!

I had a great experience all around. I explained my concerns with my surgery and the staff was understanding and compassionate. Quick scheduling. No extra procedures or costs. I wish they did regular dental care because I've had bad experiences at other places and I was so comfortable here.

I just recently had two badly impacted horizontal wisdom teeth pulled and I cannot tell you how smooth my experience went. I was really nervous about my extraction but Dr. Jordan very nice and clear about the before and after of getting the extraction. It only took about 30 minutes for everything and I don't even remember getting the sedation. I am very nervous about sedatives but they made me feel very comfortable. If you are looking for a place to get any oral surgery, I definitely recommend Minnesota Dental Surgery. Also Amanda at the front desk is so helpful and was able to get me in way sooner than I expected.

Recently had my wisdom teeth plus a few extracted by Dr. Jordan and the whole procedure went flawlessly! The dental staff there are beyond kind and were able to help me calm any nerves I had with ease. They were ready to answer any and all questions and had plenty of aftercare information to make sure I was well taken care of afterwards, plus when having questions after I left office Dr. Jordan returned my email(s) within a matter of a few hours. Long story short, I'd recommend Minnesota Dental Surgery to anyone needing dental work done.

I really can't say enough about how wonderful the staff is here. I have severe anxiety around any dental procedures and require iv sedation. however, I also have very small, difficult to find veins. the staff was very understanding and had incredible bedside manner. it took a couple of tries, but they were able to get it done and I don't remember a thing about the procedure. really grateful for how they kept calm in a stressful situation. I cannot recommend this business enough!

Scheduling was a bit of a pain, but the nice guy working the front desk and appointment line was great. I saw Dr. Peter and he had an awesome bedside manner. He was really nice and so was the dental assistant. I'd definitely go here again and I'd take my kids.

The worst dental office I have ever been too. It took over two months to get an appointment and after they removed my wisdom teeth a week later my gums go infected. Horrible dental office

The employees were really hospitable! Went here on 12.16.20 No one told me about the requirements before dental surgery so i had to reschedule the appointment.. I put 4 stars because of that.. but besides that.. i had a great experience You need your xrays and doctor's referral. You call a day after they received it and you set up your appointment.
