MidWest Ohio Dental Care opened its doors in August of 1991 under the name, Charles J. Edelen, DDS, Inc. Dr. Edelen was settling in Sidney, with his wife, Julie after spending five years in the Western United States with the US Public Health Service. He served in the Indian Health Service on reservations in Montana and Wyoming and gained broad-based dental experience with focus on children's dental care, oral surgery, and restorative dentistry.

As his practice grew, additional office space and parking was needed, and a major office renovation was completed in 2001. A nation-wide search was conducted for a dental associate to join the practice to assist with the rapidly expanding patient base. Dr. Damen Patel became an associate in 2002, and a full partner in 2003. The practice adopted the new name Shelby Family Dental Care that year. In 2004, the practice assumed the business of the retiring Dr. David Fields.

Shelby Family Dental continued to grow in patient-base and services. In 2011, Dr. Edelen and Dr. Patel acquired the Piqua-based dental practice of Dr. Andrew Jackson and assumed the name MidWest Ohio Dental Care to encompass their patient base.

Dr. Edelen received his undergraduate and dental degrees from The Ohio State University. He graduated from the OSU College of Dentistry in June 1985, after which he became a commissioned officer with the United States Public Health Service. While in the USPHS he worked for the Indian Health Service on two different Indian Reservations in Montana and Wyoming. After five and a half years in the Public Health Service, Dr. Edelen and his wife Julie (Redinbo) returned to Sidney in the spring of 1991, where he opened his private dental practice.

Dr. Edelen currently resides south of Sidney on a farm in Orange Township with his wife Julie and their three children Kellie, Jake and Ryan. The farm is mainly for crops, but has horses, dogs, cats and plenty of fresh air. Dr. Edelen is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, fishing and camping. He is very active in the Boy Scouts organization (Troop 95), with his sons and has taken two backpacking trips in New Mexico. He has also traveled to Africa twice to donate dental care in Tanzanian villages and the Angel House Orphanage with a group led by Dr. Lisa Alvetro. While there, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

Dr. Edelen enjoys golf, skiing, spending time with his family, and anything that has to do with the great outdoors. He is an avid fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes and is proud of the family tradition of attending school there, which is where he and Julie met. Proficient in all areas of general dentistry, Dr. Edelen has also completed several post-graduate courses of continuing education and strives to always stay abreast of all the latest advancements in modern dentistry.

Dr. Patel graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine in 1995. Upon graduation, he completed a one-year general practice residency program at Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut. He then worked at a dental clinic and was in private practice in New York State. In 2003, Dr. Patel and his family had the opportunity to move to Sidney, join Dr. Edelen in practice, and also be closer to family. He became a full partner in the practice the following year.

Dr. Patel and his wife are the proud parents of two daughters and a son. He is a self-proclaimed golf addict. He loves to play, read and dream about golf. As a dentist, he believes in treating patients as he would family, and offering them the latest that technology has to offer in order to help them achieve dental health.

Currently, Dr. Patel is working on continuing education courses with the United States Dental Institute to offer both adult and children patients orthodontic care. He is also working on an externship program with The Midwest Implant Institute to become certified in surgically placing dental implants. I've had traumatic experiences at dental offices. I was referred to this office last year, and I'm upset with myself because I didn't go to this office before. More specifically, Dr. Lochard. She has changed my life when it comes to my severe anxiety. She is very understanding, and makes every appointment her priority for me to be comfortable. Her team is very gentle with me too. My last filling I had done, I was numbed once, she started on it, I said it hurt a little bit, she immediately stopped and gave me more to make me feel comfortable. I absolutely love that team!! Dr. Lochard answers all my questions to my understanding and does everything she can to help save teeth instead of other places that just wants to extract them.

Never ever had pain when Dr. Edelen did dental repair, always numbed up and never felt a thing. However he is doing less wanting to retire, so I agreed to letting another Dentist do my work. Most painful dental experience I ever had in 50 years. Dr. Lochard she came in with a chip on her shoulder anyway, because I wanted everything done on same day, which I always do. Been going to that office for many years. Every other time Dr. Edelen numbed my upper gums and then my upper palate, then took care of someone else while numbing took effect. She only numbed my upper gums and said it was fast acting, and started almost immediately. Quess she was in a hurry, and I quess they don't bother to document or read charts-that would take time. It wasn't until I was sobbing in the chair she numbed my upper palate. Then they tried to blame the first attempt at numbing not working on me working night shift, drinking caffeine. I have always worked nights and come in after my shift and have always drank caffeine, the only variable that changed was her. The she even insulted me that it was just vibration or pressure I was feeling. I'm in scrubs with RN on my badge, I know all about pain scale and the adjectives to describe it. Shooting pain. I'm still angry. May report her to the board.

I wouldn't even bother with this company and their employees, so we made an appt with this company after getting some X-rays done at another location, in which they told us they would be able to preform the surgery need to remove a wisdom tooth so we choose this location to do the operation, to then be told that they have not received the X-rays and since we are 20 minutes into the appt that we may need to fork up the money to redo the X-rays, or reschedule because....... It's almost lunch time and they are closed... are you serious?? This is the customer service this company has, lunch comes first.... Beware of this place,, god forbid you under the knife and lunch comes around.

My husband went in with tooth pain and bad breath. Dr Patel took out 2 wisdom teeth and sent him home. Gave him a tiny piece of paper of how much Motrin and Tylenol he can have... no antibiotic (due to the pus pockets found in the cavity) tremendous amount of pain and discount for my husband. He couldn't eat or swallow for days. When he called the office for help they said their is nothing they can do just keep taking the over the counter meds. A week later he goes in and they say oh that is infected! There was no empathy or understanding for my husband. Just what "should" happen and you "should" be ok... mailbox was full and tried to blame us for not texting him... seriously. His whole experience was uncomfortable, no empathy or understanding, no one cared to help or listen. All in all in our opinion this should never happen to any patient and we will nottt under any circumstances be back. Thank you but no thank you.
