Dear Dr. Sophocles, We were in complete overwhelm when our caregiver sent through the photograph of my mother's dissolved, broken front tooth. As both parents are now in assisted living, we rely on our caregiver as a loving resource for all that is happening in their world. When I rang your office, Morgan was so kind and comforting after she shared the photograph with you and heard our urgent request to bring my mother in post-haste. You had a full schedule with many patients and you miraculously fit us in. Upon our arrival, you expressed a deep concern for the most successful procedure to offer her. The care and concern from you in giving her the absolute best outcome was incredibly touching. At 88 and on early islands of dementia, we were nervous about bringing her on such a cold day, yet remained ever so hopeful she would allow you to create a new tooth; truthfully though, we had no idea how she would react in the chair. Every aspect of your diligence to understand what would be best for her, along with your gentle touch and artistic sense of creating a new tooth, became an inspiring act of devotion. You proved to be the "DaVinci" of dental, as you created a masterpiece for her in less than two hours, in between a fully-scheduled Thursday and prior to departing on a long-awaited vacation. What doctor or dentist would care so much? Only someone with the highest integrity and moral compass of care for their patients. You have gone far above the spheres of dental destiny to offer this artistry of ivory for our mother. I was in tears of happiness and awe after leaving your office, recognizing the Herculean effort you put forth for her and for our whole family. You deeply understood the challenges of life we travel through with our mother's memory loss and you treated her like the queen that she is and gave her back the smile she could remember and one we cherish. Your honest concern was deeply appreciated. You have been our family dentist for over 20 years and every time there is a need or an emergency, you and your wondrous colleagues of care are there for us. We are in the depths of gratitude for your artistic, giving heart and passionate craft. Thank you x 1,000 Dr. Michael for your practice of perfection for your patients and for every one of your gifted colleagues who support you. We are counting the blessings from that day with deep appreciation and gratitude. The McGarry Family

I had a very horrible, painful, unpleasant experience here with this dentist. I have extreme tooth sensitivity, and forewarned the office staff and dentist well ahead of and during my visit. While there for my first exam, I was nervous that a sensitive tooth would be hit, and I was crossing and uncrossing my feet. I was reprimanded by the dentist for moving too much, and he spoke with a frustrated, almost parental tone, the way a parent scolds a child. He stated he found a cavity in a tooth that had not bothered me previously, and said he wanted to drill it. He rushed me into this decision, and became annoyed when I wanted to call my husband to be sure that our insurance would cover the cost first, because we had recently acquired new insurance. I was reprimanded, again, like a child, and told to put my phone down so he could drill the tooth, which he claimed had so much decay that it needed a crown. I was now crying, and while he and his assistant continued to work on the tooth, I had tears streaming down both sides of my face. I couldn't talk because instruments were in my mouth, and the drill and cold water were setting off my tooth sensitivity. They both ignored my tears, offered no comfort, no reassurance. It was one of the most awkward moments I've ever had in my life. I cried harder because of the way they were treating me. He rushed, he was frustrated, he was annoyed. When he was finished, he said make an appointment for two hours to have the crown put on, and then he and the assistant left the room, and never returned. They left the bib on me, left the head of the chair down, and walked out. The only way I can describe the feeling I had was "violated". I felt violated. I took the bib off and ran out of the office. I didn't stop at the desk. I was hysterical, crying so hard that I couldn't breathe. I called my husband from the car and could barely speak. I tried to find another dentist to finish the crown portion, but no one would take it on, so I had to return to him. My appointment was for 7:30am. They called the day before to confirm. I arrived at 7:30am, they put the bib on, put the numbing qtip on my gums, and left me there. At 8:00am, I got out of the chair, found a staff member, and asked if the dentist was even here at the office. They said no, he's on his way. I had sat there for almost 40 minutes, with medicine in my mouth, and no one said a word to me. When he did arrive, he did not apologize for being 40 minutes late. He placed the crown. Days later, the pain started. Unbearable pain, to the point that I had to go back. Upon that visit, he told me that "you're just not accepting the crown". He implied that it was my mouth's fault that the crown was causing pain, and there was nothing he could do, except recommend a root canal. I questioned the integrity of the work, and that prompted him to order an X-ray, which he told me was "to show me" that his work was fine. The X-ray showed an infection in the tooth next to the new crown. This was the site of a previous root canal, and he said that that tooth was the cause of my pain. This infection was not present on the xrays he took on my first visit a few weeks before, so I could only assume it came some time after my first with him. Now I was left needing a root canal to a tooth that I had never had an issue with. He recommended an endodontist, but after research, I discovered that the person he recommended is his wife, who has a different last name. I found this suspicious and odd, so I sought a new endodontist, and got the root canal elsewhere. I also had to ask for an antibiotic myself, after I told them that I did not want to end up with endocarditis. He called it in after a few hours, and only after his hygienist called me personally and questioned why I was upset about the treatment I received. This was another very inappropriate, uncomfortable conversation. This was my experience. I realize I'm only one person, but, I hope in reading this, it helps someone else avoid a bad experience.
