Dr. Ficca lives in Charlotte with his wife Kate, who is a Charlotte native and their two girls. When not practicing his passion for periodontics, Dr. Ficca enjoys fly fishing, tennis, traveling, quality family time, and playing frisbee with his 2 Australian Shepherds.
Dr. Ficca, a native of Maryland, graduated Cum Laude from Wake Forest University in 1996. He immediately entered Temple University Dental School, where he was a member of both the Oral Surgery and Stomatognathic honor societies. Upon completion of dental school, Dr. Ficca continued his education as a General Practice Resident at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine.
He practiced and gained valuable experience as a general dentist for three years in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2004 he chose to further his education at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia, where he completed a three-year fellowship in the field of Periodontics and Dental Implants. Dr. Ficca is trained and certified to provide oral and intravenous conscious sedation.

If you are missing teeth or need to have damaged teeth removed, you should consider dental implants. You may also want to explore implants if you are unhappy with your dentures or other tooth replacement.
During your visit, Dr. Ficca will talk with you about your goals for treatment and examine your teeth and surrounding tissues. Hell review your X-rays and may take 3D X-rays, also known as a cone beam CT scan, to get insight into the supporting structure of your teeth.
Youll have your procedure in-office with local anesthesia or local with IV sedation. The latter option allows you to sleep through the entire experience. In either case, you should be completely comfortable and not feel any part of your treatment.
Surgery to place a single implant usually takes under an hour. As a periodontist, Dr. Ficca will also use techniques to condition the gums and surrounding soft tissue. This will promote a more natural appearance once you receive your crown.
In the two days following the procedure, our patients usually take ibuprofen and Tylenol. Most people describe the symptoms as minimal discomfort. You can expect to return to normal activities on day three, and minor swelling and discomfort should fade over the next few days.
Youll have a follow-up visit with Dr. Ficca two weeks after receiving your dental implants and then 8-10 weeks later. Once your implants are secure, youll visit your restorative dentist, who will place your permanent crowns. Dr. Ficca and our staff will be in close contact with the restorative dentist throughout your treatment to make sure your final outcome is as secure and natural-looking as possible.

I'm not a patient myself (although I do need a gum graft done, if I can find the time in my schedule), but I'm a Charlotte dentist, who's referred patients to Dr. Ficca for a variety of periodontal needs. He's consistently taken great care of everyone we've sent to him, and they've given him great reviews. We've developed a great working relationship & communication, so there's never any confusion or doubt about the results. While I enjoy doing a lot of periodontal surgery myself, I highly recommend Dr. Ficca and his team if you're in need of periodontal care.

It took me about 6 years to decide to do the 2 gum tissue grafts & gingevectomy that my dentist recommended. I was afraid of being in a lot of pain & the procedure grossed me out. Dr. Ficca & his team were amazing. They took the time to answer all of my questions. I opted to do IV sedation & was so happy I did. I had virtually no pain until the 5th or 6th day after the procedure & the pain I did experience was not bad at all- what you would expect with healing tissue. I am so pleased with the results & wish I had it done sooner. If you're on the fence about having a procedure done here, Dr. Ficca & his staff will take care of you.

I was referred out to Mathew Ficca by my regular dentist for a periodontal assessment. I have to say that he and all of his staff are top-notch! It started with the ease of making the appointment. I wanted to see him ASAP but all of the appointments were a few weeks out. She said that she could put me on a waiting list and call me back if anything came up sooner. Indeed, she did call me back with a sooner appointment. Most doctors or dentists office say they will put you on a list but hardly any ever call back. The dental assistants and dental hygienist are all fantastic as well. As for Dr. Ficca himself, he has a very pleasant manner and explains things very thoroughly. That's important to me because I need to understand any procedures being proposed for me to be comfortable with them. Additionally, he is a minimalist meaning that he isn't going to do a procedure unless it's necessary and tries the least invasive procedure first. The bottom line is that Mathew Ficca and his staff are all fantastic! Cheers!

I was referred to Dr. Ficca to remove a tag on my gum. I was afraid but their office put me at ease. Dr. Ficca explained the procedure thoroughly in a manner that put one at ease and he seems trustworthy. The procedure seem to go well through my uneasiness as he numb the area pretty well and gave instructions about aftercare. The receptionist is very personable and professional. I liked it when they called to ask if I wanted an earlier appointment when there was an opening. I would recommend this office. They provide excellent services.

Dr. Ficca is the best dentist I've ever been to by far. I've been to countless dentists and orthodontists throughout my life and most of them are rushed, impersonal, do low quality work and the entire visit is usually so painful and uncomfortable. I had a dental implant placed with Dr. Ficca as well as a follow up appointment to laser off cement that was causing irritation after my implant healed. Both times, he made the visits as pain free as possible and eased my anxiety IMMENSELY because he's very careful in how he numbs you. Somehow, both visits I was having literal panic attacks about ended up being almost painless, even the recovery. Dr. Ficca is a quality dentist and his laid back demeanor is great for people with severe dental anxiety like me. Thank you again so much!

Dr Ficca explained the entire process to me, and patiently answered all of my questions. It's been six months since the implant, and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Ficca's entire staff, Mary, Gwen and the rest of the team make you feel like an old friend. It was such a great experience for me and I highly recommend them.

The dental assistants were gentle and calming. Dr. Ficca himself is very knowledgeable, patient and clearly devoted to his patients. He didn't rush in any way and patiently answered all questions. He explained the procedure in detail which allowed me to feel educated and comfortable with what was going to happen. The procedure was painless and quick. The recovery was surprisingly easy. I have had two separate surgeries done by Dr. Ficca. Everyone in the office is so sweet and helpful. I just recently had a gum graft done on my front two teeth. From what I heard from others, it's a tough surgery to recover from. They obviously did not go to the right doctor, because I was eating normally two days after surgery, granted you are sore but nothing that anyone can't habdle. I will 10/10 reccomend Dr. Ficca to anyone with ANY gum issues. He is the best! Hopefully i won't have anymore issues, but if I do I will be returning.
