Missing teeth can be embarrassing, cause people to hide their smiles, and be a source of anxiety, discomfort, and insecurity. The gaps missing teeth create easily become infected with bacteria, which causes other teeth to shift out of place, making it difficult for people to speak or eat correctly.

MD Periodontics award-winning implant specialists and dental practice is sensitive to the pain and shame of missing teeth. We provide state-of-the-art dental implants, restoring our patients natural smiles and self-esteem, as well as preventing future oral health problems based on their specific needs.

Dental implants are the closest substitute you can get to a natural tooth. Up to 3 million people in the U.S. use implants to improve their smiles, eat more comfortably, and fill out their faces for a healthier look. A dental tooth implant can replace a single tooth or multiple teeth.

Dental implants are small posts that take the place of the tooths original root in your jawbone. Because the post is fused to the jawbone, implants do not make noise or cause bone damage like bridgework and dentures.

After the post has firmly joined the jawbone, we screw an abutment (a metal connector) into the implanted post. A custom crown is fabricated and placed on the abutment to complete the process and give you a natural look.

FDA-approved ceramic implants are the best esthetic option, bar none. It is also the only option for anyone with a metal sensitivity interested in keeping metal out of their mouth (Holistic Dentistry).

One thing to know about Zirconia dental implants is that they require great precision when placed in the jaw by your implant specialist. Thus, a top-flight periodontist is highly recommended to perform the procedure for optimal long-term results.

Titanium was a preferred material for dental implants in the 1960s. The reason is that the material is quite durable and integrates fairly well with the bone in your jaw. Titanium can be somewhat more affordable than ceramic and is slightly more resistant to cracks and fractures than ceramic.

MD Periodontics of Beverly Hills - Periodontist in Beverly Hills, CA

Since titanium dental implants cannot be completely tooth-colored (like ceramic dental implants), some of the metal can become visible when you smile. For example, if a patient develops (or is prone to) gum recession, the metal at the implants base becomes visible, which is not ideal.

Full arch, like All-on-4, dental implant treatment provides patients the opportunity to replace all or part of their upper and lower teeth with a custom-designed smile that uses the implants for anchorage. This option has a much more natural look than dentures.

Our periodontist surgically inserts four to six titanium posts into your jawbone as the main anchors during this procedure. A temporary prosthesis is then attached to those implants, and the area(s) are allowed to healthe result: a seamless look across your mouth.

Your periodontist will check and ensure enough underlying bone support to resist chewing forces. This often depends on the degree of tooth loss, how long the tooth has been missing, and the location of the missing tooth or teeth. In cases where there has been extensive bone loss, a bone graft might be necessary. A bone graft increases the bone density to create the support needed to accommodate implants.

Our dental implant specialists use state-of-the-art technology, including special 3-D imaging (combining the information from a digital scan of the mouth and CBCT of the jawbones), to assess the quantity of

Then, we review the CT scan and X-rays with you, explain your situation, and review available treatment strategies for replacement teeth and restoring your oral health. We consider your dental needs and your financial situation to develop an affordable solution for you.

Full dentures are artificial teeth for the upper, lower, or jaws. These are even more uncomfortable than partial dentures that only replace a few teeth. Full dentures are attached to your gums using messy adhesives that are not completely effective in keeping them from shifting.

MD Periodontics of Beverly Hills - Periodontist in Beverly Hills, CA

With dental implant rehabilitation, it is now possible to secure full dentures to the upper and lower jaw using several implant posts, making the dentures strong and stable. They can be permanently inserted or, if needed, formatted to be removable.

Removable implant dentures snap onto the implant posts and can be removed for cleaning. There is no longer any need to fuss with gooey, messy adhesives or worry about your dentures shifting and making noise while talking or chewing.

Different insurance providers offer varied coverage for dental implants. Most providers do not cover the procedure because it is considered cosmetic. However, some providers provide implant coverage, but it often comes with limits, exclusions, or a hefty deductible. Sometimes, some needed services, such as tooth extraction, may be covered if necessary.

While straight Medicaid and Medicare may not cover dental implant procedures, it is possible to apply for a federal grant. The grants are often approved when implants are not just a cosmetic procedure but a necessity to prevent further damage to the jawbone and gums.

Its not unreasonable to ask do dental implants last forever? The implant screw itself can last a lifetime, assuming the patient receives regular dental check-ups every six months and brushing and flossing regularly. However, the crown usually lasts about 10 to 15 years before being replaced due to wear and tear.

Typically, most patients can begin eating a full, normal diet within one week after their surgery. The first few days following your procedure, you should be careful only to eat soft foods or liquids to protect your vulnerable gums.

Although extremely rare, infection and nerve damage can occur following dental implant surgery. To avoid complications, it is important to do your homework and find a highly qualified periodontist and be sure to share your complete medical history with your surgeon.

The success of your implants will depend greatly on how well you maintain them. They need to be professionally cleaned at dental check-ups once every three to six months. Also, brushing and flossing daily is necessary to maintain your new teeth, as well as overall systemic health.

We are conveniently located to patients throughout Southern California and the Los Angeles area. Our Beverly Hills office is conveniently located for West Los Angeles, Culver City, West Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Sherman Oaks, and Encino, to name a few.

A zirconia dental implant (also called a ceramic dental implant) is an artificial tooth made from zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), a crystalline form of zirconium that has been converted from metal to ceramic. Zirconia is particularly suited for dental material because it has similar properties to titanium, its neighbor on the Periodic Chart (remember this from 8th-grade science class?), but without the downsides of metal being placed into your body. Zirconia implants are commonly known as ceramic implants.

For many years, titanium was the gold standard for tooth replacement. This was due to its tensile strength and high success rate with assimilation into bone tissue (known as osseointegration) and good bone-to-implant contact. However, there are some problems with titanium implants.

Another issue: as titanium implants age, problems begin to arise. These include corrosion resulting from long-term exposure of the titanium to saliva, fluoride, and other metals in tooth fillings. This, in turn, leads to metal debris being scattered in the soft tissue surrounding the implants. An inflammatory response known as peri-implantitis follows, causing the bone to resorb and the implants to loosen.

To address these health and aesthetic concerns, a one-piece ceramic bio-material adaptable for grafting onto bone was introduced in 2004. However, two-piece zirconia implants can be beneficial when a missing tooth requires an angled implant.

Due to low infection and rejection rates, ceramics were first introduced for hip replacements. Plus, no theres no metal corrosion or debris to cause inflammatory softtissueresponses, and ceramics have sufficient compression strength to endure considerable load.

MD Periodontics of Beverly Hills - Periodontist in Beverly Hills, CA

Aesthetically, ceramic zirconia dental implants match natural teeth exceptionally well. Zirconia implants are ideal for replacing teeth in the anterior area of the mouth, where theyre more visible. Please look at our before and after picture galleries for ceramic implants, and you will be hard-pressed to pick which teeth are genuine and which are ceramic implants. They are that real-looking.

Also, because ceramics dont conduct heat as well as metals do, there is very little trouble with temperature sensitivity. Whats more, ceramic is relatively smooth, which makes it difficult for bacteria to thrive. These properties have made ceramic a popular material for implants in recent years.

As leaders in implantology, MD Periodontics was one of the first implant dental centers in the United States to be selected by CeraRoot, the pioneers in ceramic implantsystems, when they received FDA approval in 2011. CeraRoots long track record of success dates to 2004 when they first introduced ceramic implants in Europe.

  • Ceramic Implants are more biocompatible with the human bodyCeramic implants are made from zirconia a ceramic material that is readily integrated into bone tissue. Their biocompatibility avoids rejection, inflammation, or implant failure that can come with metal implants. They are also allergy-free!
  • Metal-free means hypoallergenicClinical studies have shown ceramic implants do not provoke allergic reactions with delicate gum tissue unlike titanium and other metals. Therefore, they are a good biomaterial choice for anyone with metal allergies. If you or your dentist suspect you have metal allergies, a Melisa test can detect a nickel or titanium allergy. If this is the case, a metal-free solution is the best option for you.
  • Better AppearanceA fairly common problem with titanium dental implants is that the metal rim of the implant can become visible when patients have thin or receding gums. This creates an unsightly thin grey line where the tooth meets the gum. Because zirconia is white, it looks like a natural tooth, so receding gums dont pose an esthetic problem.
  • More corrosion-resistantOver time, titanium has been shown to have corrosion problems arising from chemical reactions between saliva, fluoride, and the metals in tooth fillings. As the titanium broke down, metal debris would scatter in the soft tissue surrounding the implant that would, in turn, cause an inflammatory response. The body then attacks the implant, causing bone loss and implant loosening. On the other hand, ceramic is biologically inert, meaning that it doesnt react with materials that can cause it to break down.
  • Less Bacteria FriendlyBecause zirconia does not conduct an electrical charge, it creates a less friendly environment for bacteria to grow. This lack of conductivity can be an asset for keeping gums healthy and breath fresh.
  • Holistic Dentistry CompliantAn important benefit of zirconia implants is that theyre electrically inert for those who follow holistic dentistry practices. Therefore, the implants dont obstruct energy flow through the bodys meridians.
  • A simpler and more hygienic designTitanium implants contain two pieces: a screw-like stem drilled into the jaw and grows into the jawbone and a post (called an abutment) that screws on top of the stem just below the gumline. The artificial tooth is then fitted onto the abutment. In two-part implant systems, chewing causes micro-motion between the two parts of the implant below the gumline. This creates a micro-gap that is a moist, bacteria-friendly environment. Bacteria growth can lead to local inflammation at the bone level and cause loosening of the implant. The one-piece design of a ceramic implant sidesteps this problem. The stem and implant abutment are incorporated into one seamless component, so theres nowhere for bacteria to hide. Moreover, because the zirconia abutment sits above the gum line, its accessible to the toothbrush and, therefore, much easier to keep clean.
  • A shorter and more comfortable implant procedureCeramic implants are designed to be placed into the hole created right after a tooth is extracted. A two-part implant requires two dental procedures: one to insert the stem and sew the gum over it, and a second surgery weeks later to cut open the healed gum, expose the branch, and attach the abutment post. With CeraRoot, theres no need for two surgeries! That means less anesthesia, less discomfort, and one less dentist visit for our implant patients.

  • Titanium has been around for several decades, so its long-term durability is far better known. Even though ceramic implants have enjoyed an excellent track record in implant dentistry over the last 15 years with perfect bone integration, low complications, and excellent implant survival rates. But, we still lack very long-term data on ceramics regarding durability.
  • It takes a very experienced implant periodontist to fit ceramic teeth correctly. Getting it right when it comes to one-piece ceramicimplantplacement means being close to perfect. There is very little room for error, so unless you are in the hands of a real expert in the field, your chances of having implant failure are increased.
  • To be a good candidate for a one-piece implant, you must have healthy bone tissue. The bone must be healthy where the ceramic implant is placed. This requirement can be mitigated somewhat by using a two-piece ceramic implant.
  • Having exceptional implant treatment outcomes requires a periodontist with a high degree of expertise in ceramics who can assess your bone quality and fit you correctly with the most appropriate type of implant. Your periodontist can also explore the possibility of a bone graft.
  • Not seriously grind teeth (have bruxism). This condition can disqualify you because the flexural strengthof the ceramic may not withstand extremely prolonged high compressive forces over its lifetime.
  • Have sufficient bone density to demonstrate good bone healing potential. If you do not have enough bone available in exactly the right place, you can still qualify for natural-looking ceramic teeth with a two-piececeramic implantsystem or after a bone graft. Once we examine you, we can discuss your options and the plusses and minuses of each available option.
  • Choosing which dental implant material is best for you requires a detailed examination with X-rays and an in-depth conversation with experienced implant specialists (such as the nationally recognized ones at MD Periodontics).

Titanium dental implants have enjoyed a high success rate since they were first introduced in the 1960s to replace natural teeth. A titanium dental implant consists of a metal screw inserted into your jawbone below the gum line, which replaces the root of a missing tooth. This screw acts as a base to which a metal post (known as an abutment) is attached to support the porcelain artificial tooth (known as the crown), which sits on top of the post.

Unlike removable dentures, titanium implants do not result in a significant loss of chewing strength. Plus, you dont have to worry about your dental implants sliding around or fitting poorly as dentures can.

Biocompatibility: Titanium is considered the most biocompatible metal due to its resistance to rust and corrosion from body fluids. It also has a low level of reactivity with its surrounding environment.

MD Periodontics of Beverly Hills - Periodontist in Beverly Hills, CA

Durability: Titanium molecules have special properties that make them bond especially well with bone (known as osseointegration). This means extremely high forces are needed to break the bonds between bone and a titanium implant, making it incredibly durable. A titanium implant can last upwards of 20 years inside a body.

Gum disease can cause dental implants to fail because healthy gum tissue supports the implant. To prevent this, make sure to take proper care of your new teeth (as well as your natural teeth). Remember to brush and floss your teeth twice daily (at least), and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash will prevent bacteria from growing below the gum line and negatively impacting your implant.

New patients considering an implant procedure often ask us if the titanium post will trigger metal detectors at airports. Its very unlikely that a titanium abutment will trigger a metal detector. Titanium is non-iron-based and has a low magnetic field, so it does not set off magnets. This also means that MRIs can be safely performed on patients after titanium implant surgery to replace missing teeth.

Throughout the nearly 60 years since titanium became popular for use in dental implants, studies have shown it to be extremely safe, with very few reported cases of problems due to allergy or toxicity side effects.

MD Periodontics of Beverly Hills - Periodontist in Beverly Hills, CA

In a large-scale study that performed metal allergy tests on 1,500 dental patients, only 0.6% reacted to titanium. In these very rare cases, titanium implants failed to bond to the bone due to an allergic reaction to the metal particles released from the implant. This led to an inflammatory response causing bone loss and implant loosening.

So technically, it is possible to have adverse reactions to titanium or any metal placed in your body. This is one reason that people also consider ceramic zirconia dental implants. But in most cases, allergic reactions are to metals used as titanium alloys, such as nickel or palladium, and not to the titanium itself.

If a patient has a history of metal allergies or is concerned with the possibility of having an allergic reaction to a metal implant, we recommend they undergo testing. This can screen for metal allergies to determine if the metal is the right type of implant for them.

Yes. The MELISA (Memory Lymphocyte Immunostimulation Assay) test uses a small blood sample from which white blood cells are extracted and exposed to titanium. The blood sample is then periodically examined over several days to look for signs of allergic reaction.

This test is far more accurate than the traditional skin patch allergy test. It is frequently used before joint replacements in patients with suspected metal allergies and in industries where metal allergies are a concern.

Its important to know that medical and research communities have not accepted the MELISA test as 100% reliable. So, its up to each person to decide whether they feel confident in their test results before deciding to proceed with a metal implant.

If you are allergic to titanium or you suspect you may be, schedule a visit with one of our periodontists to discuss other tooth replacement treatment options available for restoring your oral health and achieving a healthy-looking smile.

Dr. Abdy Moshrefi is a terrific dentist, and his staff is very professional and friendly. When my front tooth broke off near the gum, Dr. Mark Chemla, my equally terrific regular dentist, sent me to Dr. Moshrefi for an implant. Dr. Moshrefi pulled the old tooth without pain and inserted the implant with computer precision. Xrays show the final result is a perfect fit. My new tooth works like the original and looks perfectly matched. Highly recommended.

If I could rate this entire team an 11, I would. They were accommodating beyond belief. They completed an emergency 24-hour turnaround on the temporary piece, because of a high-end client luncheon that I was scheduled for. All in all, they took care of me. And on top of it, their work and professionalism set the bar for how it should be done. The office space is super clean and sterilized beyond. I never want to go back. But if I have to, this is the ONLY place where I will return.

MD Periodontics is the best experience I have ever had with dental care by far. I came to Dr Moshrefi after a failed gum graft procedure that left me with a lot of pain and in a worsened state. The staff was communicative, welcoming, and efficient, and the doctor was meticulous and extremely caring. The procedure could not have had better results, and Dr Moshrefi was so careful with his work that even on the day of surgery, I hardly experienced any discomfort. I 10/10 recommend going to MD Periodontics, specifically Dr Moshrefi, for any periodontal procedures you need done in the LA area.

I am a financial professional in the Santa Monica area and have been a patient of MD Periodontics for many years. I'm extremely particular of who I would allow to work on me as I have heard nightmare stories. I highly recommend this office as it is truly first class, from the both doctors and all of the staff. I was scheduled for a consult with the doctor as to a tooth that could or could not be saved. Obviously I was alittle nervous about what would happen and the staff was aware of this when I walked in but they didn't make me feel awkward about it and actually calmed me and made me feel right at home. It turned out that I needed an extraction of the tooth and also an implant with bone grafting along with minor gum surgery. At this point all the calmness that I had went away! Doctor Moshrefi must have studied psychology as well because he was able to reassure me that all was well and I was in the best of hands. He let me think about it for a few and I actually decided to do all of it that day! Like jumping into a cold river just do it and get it over with is what I felt like. My surgery was on the 8/23/18 and it could not have gone more perfectly than it did. Doctor Moshrefi literally has the hands of a feather and the eyes of an eagle. The thought of what was going on in my mouth was more terrifying than the surgery. It was exactly has he told me, he was in and out. It was a very short time (1 hour and maybe 15 min) given all that he had to do with my double rooted little bull that was in my mouth. I have since gone back had my stitches taken out which actually felt good when he was taking them out, weird I know but it did, and no issues to report! No real pain just discomfort on the third night, no swelling, and has healed perfectly! I would not trust any other Doctor with this level of procedure, ever! I don't leave reviews of really anything my family and I do but this was so shocking to me that I just had too. I tip my hat to this Feather-Handed-Eagle-Eyed Doctor and his incredible staff!!!!

Recently I had some bad luck with my dentist of 25 years and needed a second opinion on some urgent dental work. I reached out to MD Periodontics and they could not have been more informative, resourceful and thoughtful. This convinced me to put the state of my mouth in their hands. That proved to be one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. Not only were they able to assess my situation within minutes but scheduled me for a much needed surgery within 48 hours. Looking back at the entire process I can honestly say that Abdy and Nazy Moshrefi could not have handled me more professionally and efficiently. Ear-to-ear smiles from this patient! A+++ experience with MD Periodontics!!!
