Timothy McNutt Sr, DDS, is a pediatric dentist who is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, and a graduate of John Overton High School. He opened McNutt Pediatric Dentistry in 1988. In 1989, he purchased the practice of Dr. Dan Baccus. Dr. McNutt had been a patient of Dr. Baccus since he was ten years old, and at one point when he was 13, he told Dr. Baccus, I am going to buy your practice someday. With a love of children and dentistry in his heart, Dr. McNutt made good on that statement years later after completing the levels of education listed below.
Dr. McNutt earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and his dental degree at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis. Both degrees are with honors. While in dental school, Dr. McNutt received multiple awards, which included the IMHOTEP Society for Outstanding Leadership, the Deans Leadership Award, and the American Society of Dentistry for Children Certificate of Merit. He also served as President of his dental class and served as the President of the Student Government for the College of Dentistry.
Dr. McNutt then completed a pediatric dental specialty residency program at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. UAB had a strong program in treating children, hospital dentistry, and facial growth and development. It is one of the few pediatric programs that also train under the orthodontic department for the treatment of young people with braces. Dr. McNutt served as Chief Resident and graduated with honors. He also was a fellow at the Chauncey Sparks Center for Developmental & Learning Disorders.
Dr. McNutt became a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in 1994. He has been on staff at Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital for over 20 years. Dr. McNutt has lectured dental students and residents and has written a book for children to help them prepare for their first dental visit, called Alley Alligators Awesome Smile. He enjoys speaking with childrens classes and parent groups to help promote good dental health.
What is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist? A pediatric dentist is a dentist who has completed an American Dental Association accredited graduate program in the specialty of pediatrics. A dentist who graduates from a specialty program in pediatrics is eligible to become board certified through the voluntary examination process of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Involvement in the certification process is a demonstration of the pediatric dentists desire to pursue proficiency and excellence. To be on staff at most hospitals, this is now required.
The certification process involves a thorough written examination covering all areas of information on which a pediatric dental specialist should be knowledgeable. Once the written exam is passed, the second step is to pass a vigorous oral examination. After successful passage of these phases, the candidate is required to submit case histories demonstrating real life treatment. Upon completion of these steps, the pediatric dental specialist is granted board certified status. Not all pediatric dentists are board certified.
Dr. McNutt has been actively participating in his professional associations even while in school. He has served as President of the TNAPD twice and has been acting TNAPD Treasurer for over twenty years. He has also won certificates for his continuing education efforts. It is very important to all practitioners who are given the privilege and responsibility to care for children to do so in a way that brings honor to our profession while delivering the best of care. Dr. McNutt is also a member of the American Dental Association, Tennessee Dental Association, Nashville Dental Society, American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Orthodontic Society.
Dr. McNutt and hisstaffare focused on building trust through relationships and familiarity. While staff turnover can be common in many offices, the average tenure for the McNutt Pediatric Dentistry family is over 11 years. We had a WONDERFUL first visit for our almost 3 year old with Dr McNutt and his team. As a parent, I was so impressed at how patient they were and how well they walked him through every thing they were going to do. They made it so personalized to his developmental age. At Dr.McNutt office the environment is so welcoming and open. The staff is great and is well trained to handle kids. I was nervous my son was going to cry and act stubborn; however he was happy and playful while getting his teeth clean. DR. McNutt is awesome

Great, friendly, calm environment. My daughter has been going to see Dr. McNutt Sr. for 7 years and isn't afraid to go to him. The staff makes sure we are well taken care of always! Dr. McNutt and his son are very good with children and so kind. This is definitely the dentist to go to!!

I cannot recommend this practice enough. After having multiple traumatic experiences at another pediatric dentistry in Nashville we decided to make a switch. My daughters visit was fun, low-key, and enjoyable! I feel so at peace knowing that she will look forward to her next visit instead of it being a scary experience for her.
