As an orthodontist, I feel blessed to be in a profession that allows me to help people and make changes that can affect their lives in such a positive way. I never get tired of the look on peoples faces when they see the changes happen in their smile.

Knapp Orthodontics - Orthodontist in Owens Cross Roads, AL

I love the interactions I have with my patients. It is wonderful to get to know them throughout their treatment; I see them on a regular basis and we develop real relationships. Getting to know each patient and hearing the different stories they share about their lives means each day brings with it new opportunities to learn, which is amazing.

The most fulfilling part of my work, though, is transforming smiles. When a patient starts to see the changes in their teeth and appearance, when they start to realize that their hard work is paying off and that theyll never again feel the need to cover their mouth or duck their head while smiling or laughing, they begin to blossom.

No matter what their age is, they begin to move more self-assuredly, to make eye contact more readily and, best of all, to smile without immediately raising their hand to cover their teeth. Its incredible to witness that happen to someone Ive come to care about.

I am passionate about continuing education in orthodontics. This is a field in which there are constant changes and evolutions in treatment methodologies. I owe it to my patients, and to myself, to stay abreast of this information.

Through attendance at and participation in meetings, lectures, seminars, and hands-on demonstrations, as well keeping up with the latest orthodontic literature, I am able to ensure that I provide my patients with the best care available, always.

Ive been married to my wife Lisa for more than a decade and a half. We have three children: Gabriel, Micah, and Chloe. Away from work, my family is always my highest priority. I also enjoy farming and golfing.

Being active in the community is important to me as well. Im very involved with church functions and have volunteered with Christian medical/dental mission trips to other countries. Lisa received her MTA from the University of Alabama. She is an accountant and currently teaches full time at the university, in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration.

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great age to see the orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you're considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist.

  • Keep your retainer clean by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice cubes), or any foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy, etc.).
  • The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual patient. Every smile responds differently to treatment. Treatment times can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.

With braces, you should brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly will help remove any food that may be caught between the braces. You should also floss daily to get in between your braces where your brush isn't able to reach. Your orthodontist can show you how to properly brush and floss once your braces are placed.

Yes! In fact, it's even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush can't reach. This causes bacteria to build up that can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure that your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment when you first get your braces, but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities. If you play a contact sport, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance.

I started with Dr. McKinney. He was nice but Dr. Knapp has truly blown me away! So pleasant and informs me on what EXACTLY is going on with my treatment each visit instead of just adjusting me and sending me on my way. So sad I'm only getting to experience him towards the last few months of my treatment!

Dr. McKinney is awesome! I went to him to fix a big gap in front and center of my mouth. It turned out I still had my canine baby teeth never fell off so it left me with the gap. He sent me to see a surgeon to find out if my adult teeth could be pulled down and the surgeon stated it was too late and it was not likely it would be successful. So he suggested to work if straightening my teeth and closing the gap and then placing crowns on the baby teeth. So a little over a year later I completed my treatment and I feel like a new person. I now love to smile and not afraid to show my teeth! I love my smile now. And I'm so grateful I went to see Dr. McKinney. He's a great orthodontist. I decided to go with Invisalign and my treatment wasn't covered by ins. So I was put on a very affordable payment plan which is another reason I'm so grateful to his team because I could have never afford to pay the whole thing at once. Now I'm sons dentist recommends that he get braces and I'm making an appointment for him to see Dr. McKinney.

Dr. McKinney and his staff is absolutely amazing. We had a bad experience prior to being referred here and he and his office staff made my daughter feel so comfortable that she became excited about getting braces and kept boasting on how nice his office staff was to her and how they explained everything to her before they did it. Truly amazing experience!

Today was my consultation visit and I immediately fell in love with the staff and Doctor. Dr. McKinney helps come up with a game plan that suites you and discusses with you in great lengths and answers any questions or concerns. I never felt rushed nor talked down too. I was even able to have my appliances put on the same day which is HUGE for a busy MUM!
