A Florida native, Dr. James McIlwain received his pediatric dental training at Emory University in Atlanta. Following dental school, he served in multiple Air Force assignments for the next eleven years. Teaching and education have always been a high priority, serving on the faculty at universities in Texas and Florida.
Dr. McIlwain is an active member of the Episcopal church and has donated his talents with those less fortunate. For over 20 years he has been ministering to the children in the Dominican Republic, collecting medical supplies, clothing, and toys. Additionally, he has made trips to the island as a team leader in charge of providing medical and dental care for the children there.
He has practiced in Tampa for more than 40 years but never lost the quest for new advancements in-patient treatment. Individual attention and comprehensive care for each child are foremost priorities in his routine of treatment.
Dr. McIlwain is Board Certified by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Orthodontic Society. He is the past president of the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentists, Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Orthodontic Society, and serves on state, regional, and national organizations.
Dr. Leigh Ann McIlwain has been working with her father, Dr. James since 1978. In those early years, she assisted him at chairside, earning allowance during school holidays and vacations. She grew up caring for her younger brother who has learning disabilities that require special attention and kindness. That experience led her naturally to pursue pediatric dentistry as a profession.
Dr. Leigh Ann received her Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry from Tufts University, College of Dentistry. She worked part-time at Harvard Childrens Hospital assisting in clinical and surgical cases. She completed her post-doctorate in pediatric dentistry at the University of Florida, College of Dentistry. She is board certified with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Leigh Ann McIlwain and Dr. Michael Chiaramonte met and married while in dental school. It was a perfect match to bring Dr. Chiaramonte into the McIlwain Dentistry family so that parents and children could both be taken care of in the same visit. Michael and Leigh Ann have three adult children that are the biggest blessings in their lives.

It was my first time at this dentist and I was not disappointed. A wonderful experience, my appt was on time, the office is super clean and inviting. Everyone was knowledgeable and caring. I was there for a cleaning and asked questions about other teeth that will need to be replaced/fixed when needed. The Dentist explained everything and wrote up a plan for when I decide to move forward. I will be back and will transfer my kids over aswell.

I LOVE Dr. Rebecca Warnken! I recently moved to Florida from another state and was really concerned I would not be able to find a quality dentist like the one I had in Oklahoma. I have had an absolutely amazing experience with McIlwain Dental Specialists! It has a family owned feel to it and every single staff member is always so professional and kind. Dr. Ford is absolutely amazing!!! For a guy that doesn't care to go to a dentist, she has a way of making it entertaining and keeps it fun. She's determined to go the extra mile to do things the right way! I'm super grateful for her efforts to bring me a confident smile for the first time in many years!

Apparently they don't need new patients because they never return messages. I have called 8 times over the past 2 weeks. Each time no one answers and you get voicemail saying they will call you within the day but they don't. So frustrating.

I do not have the words to describe how amazing this group is and how kind hearted they all are with such good energy. Everyone is phenomenal here from the front office, back end assistants, to surgery coordinator Cindy, all the dentist Leigh-Ann and Mike are gems, and the anesthesiologist!!!! We had a wonderful experience and my kids will not go anywhere else because they also see adults. This is a forever thing!!! We love it here!!!

The staff were very accommodating, as we had to shuffle our schedules around some, and were very patient and friendly. The deep cleaning was performed with care and professionalism, was almost painless, so I congratulate the staff on their mad skills! I did need to get two fillings, and the cost is very reasonable, and they were able to fit me in to get that done quickly. Overall, I am really glad that we found them after moving to Florida. Happy to have found a great dentist group to go to throughout the future years.

Wow!! What an amazing office. From the first phone call to the checking out for my appointment. It was absolutely AMAZING. Front desk staff was great, especially "Tina" , the dentist explained everything to me, the dental assistant was also wonderful. It's not often I can say I enjoy going to the dentist, I can truthfully say I enjoyed this visit and I cannot wait to come back. This place was outstanding!!

We love it here! The dentist is always so kind, patient, and gentle with our daughter. She used to hate the dentist when we went elsewhere, now she looks forward to visiting the dentist! I myself am about to try them too!

It had been a few years since my family and I had been in after losing our benefits, the hygienist that did my cleaning was super sweet, and understanding. She, as well as Dr, listened to my questions and concerns and answered and explained all of them. I've always stayed with this practice cause I know that what is treatment planned for me is always what is needed and they aren't just trying to make money as some practices I've heard about. Zadia at the front desk and Cindy always remember us and that makes me feel like my family is more than just another patient. As adolescents, my husband and I saw Dr McIlwain. Starting from age 4, I always looked forward to my dentist appts. Who would get the chance to sit at the top row in the kids TV area at the Habana office, was always exciting for my brother and I. Dr. Mac was my dentist until I reached the age of 18 and knowing that we are giving our children the same healthy and positive dental experience like we had, means so much. This place was absolutely AMAZING. The staff were so welcoming and friendly. My special needs daughter requires some extra patience and they were so good with her. My toddler who was just there for emotional support was treated just as well and gifted with a balloon, prize and got to pick out a tooth brush along with her sister. Dr Mike was very polite and explained which plan of action would work best for her next visit. So glad I found this place.
