A Florida native, Dr. James McIlwain received his pediatric dental training at Emory University in Atlanta. Following dental school, he served in multiple Air Force assignments for the next eleven years. Teaching and education have always been a high priority, serving on the faculty at universities in Texas and Florida.
Dr. McIlwain is an active member of the Episcopal church and has donated his talents with those less fortunate. For over 20 years he has been ministering to the children in the Dominican Republic, collecting medical supplies, clothing, and toys. Additionally, he has made trips to the island as a team leader in charge of providing medical and dental care for the children there.
He has practiced in Tampa for more than 40 years but never lost the quest for new advancements in-patient treatment. Individual attention and comprehensive care for each child are foremost priorities in his routine of treatment.
Dr. McIlwain is Board Certified by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Orthodontic Society. He is the past president of the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentists, Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Orthodontic Society, and serves on state, regional, and national organizations.
Dr. Leigh Ann McIlwain has been working with her father, Dr. James since 1978. In those early years, she assisted him at chairside, earning allowance during school holidays and vacations. She grew up caring for her younger brother who has learning disabilities that require special attention and kindness. That experience led her naturally to pursue pediatric dentistry as a profession.
Dr. Leigh Ann received her Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry from Tufts University, College of Dentistry. She worked part-time at Harvard Childrens Hospital assisting in clinical and surgical cases. She completed her post-doctorate in pediatric dentistry at the University of Florida, College of Dentistry. She is board certified with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Leigh Ann McIlwain and Dr. Michael Chiaramonte met and married while in dental school. It was a perfect match to bring Dr. Chiaramonte into the McIlwain Dentistry family so that parents and children could both be taken care of in the same visit. Michael and Leigh Ann have three adult children that are the biggest blessings in their lives.

Dr. Ford is a true treasure. I followed her from her prior employer and have always appreciated her friendly demeanor and smile. And the brand new clinic is phenomenal. Being able to watch Bob Ross while getting your teeth worked on is a plus!

Amazing dentist and hygienist. I would have rated a 5 but I had to wait in the lobby for 20 min before being seen. Scheduled my appt a month in advance . Outside of that the receptionist, dentist and hygienist were amazing. Will be going back for braces. Looking forward to services in Wesley Chapel location as Its 5 min from my house. the drive to Tampa was a Hall. Great Dental office...

My family and I have gone to McIlwain Dental Specialists for probably 10-15 years now. We really like them and have had no problems. The Dentists, Hygienists, and desk staff are all competent and friendly. The icing on the cake is that the new office is amazing!

I love this practice...best pediatric dentist I've been to. My daughter is very anxious and pretty dramatic when it comes to pain but, she was very relaxed with the hygenist and Dr. McIlwain. Super friendly, fast, great with kids, and no pain. Great practice!

I can't express how hands on and caring this TEAM is ! I appreciate you guys so much ! I made a same day appointment and they invited us with open arms !! My daughter has had a chipped tooth for 1 yr , I've been to specialist to specialist, dentist to dentist !! With NOT ONE RESULT !! This team got everything I needed done in literally 30 minutes All of them were so generous, and so hands on !! I recommend them

The staff at Mcllwain dentistry tampa location have gone above and beyond for my child who has autism and severe anxiety. She has had her braces done here and every adjustment she got wouldn't have been possible without the patience, love and care from Dr Marry and all the rest of the staff. No one likes to go to the Dentist, however the Doctors and staff at McIlwain make the experience pretty awesome! The staff and the front desk meet you with a smile and a kind word. Ally the Dental Hygienist is both professional, sweet and very good at her job. Dr Ford is the fun and skillful Dentist who exceeds expectations!! Their new space is fantastic as well! We highly recommend McllWain !!

My impressions of this clinic and Dr. Michael in particular are the most positive. My son is almost 3 years old, and I saw he had caries, I knew that he would need treatment with sedation, so I immediately looked for the appropriate clinic. The first meeting was just for a checkup and my baby didn't cry, although we had visited other dentists before and he was always scared, but he liked Dr. Michael. I read a million reviews about sedation treatment before I chose this clinic for my baby because I am a very nervous mother :-D But everything went great, the nurse helped us choose the best time for treatment, we prepared our son for this visit and everything went great, our treatment was scheduled for 7 am, and already at 10 am we returned home and my son started playing no matter how nothing happened, although he was given 6 fillings and 4 crowns. I highly recommend this clinic!

Dr McIlwain and his staff are professional and go out of their way to make my grandchildren feel comfortable and so they are happy to go to the dentist each time. They take the time to explain everything to me in detail so I am confident taking the children there for all their dental care.

If they took care of dog teeth, Daisy would be a McIlwain patient too. Until they do we are a family of four that are more than happy with the great people and excellent dentistry we receive from Dr. Mike and his colleagues. Highly recommend this practice. Best dentists ever even the staff is amazing from the receptionist to the hygienist to the dentist. This is my first time coming as a 40 year old adult. But my kids love going as well. I have an issue with breathing when someone is doing my teeth which makes me choke. I had none of those issues and Alley cleaned my teeth so gently. Thank you!!! Both my sister and I and her four kids go here and hope to continue to do so in the future!
