My childhood was spent in Fort Thomas Kentucky. I attended the University of Kentucky on a full academic scholarship, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. I worked as an engineer for two years before deciding that my heart was leading me to dentistry.
I graduated with 'High Distinction' in 2007 from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. From there, I did my three year residency in Orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. I became Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in 2014, a distinction held by only 30% of practicing orthodontists. I enjoy learning about the newest techniques and technology to use in my office. Our 3D cone beam x-ray allows me to see small details that assist me in creating more customized treatment plans then ever before.
My wife Dara and I met while I was in residency in San Antonio. She is from Cibolo, so once I finished my residency we decided to make it our home. I opened McGarrell Orthodontics in 2010, and not long after we were married. We have three beautiful, active kids, Mason, Emery and Ainslee. I spend my nights and weekends coaching their sports teams, and keeping them active outdoors.
Dara and I love being an active part of the community. You will see us at local events, as well as supporting schools whenever we can. I am an avid sports fan and always pull for my alma mater, GO WILDCATS!

My daughter had braces here and they did a great job. Her teeth are beautifully straight and she even gets compliments from other dentists. It is conveniently located near her school, which was great, and they would do their best to fit her in, if a bracket came loose. Nice staff. Very clean. Very professional.

We would highly recommend Dr. McGarrell. He is one of the best Orthodontist. Dr. McGarrell is also a caring and loving dad as reflected in the pictures displayed throughout his office of his beautiful family. This depicts the character of Dr. McGarrell. Dr. McGarrell's caring nature flows right into his attitude and treatment and listening to the concerns of his patients. He always has a smile on his face to go along with his expertise which is shown to each of his patients. We have witnessed this several times over as he is interacting and working in the treatment room. He is an experienced Orthodontist and is remarkable with children. He along with his wonderful, caring and highly skilled staff (Rochelle, Karen, Heather, Connie, Megan and others) made initially getting braces, routine visits and all the transitioning throughout the process as comfortable as could be and very supportive for our daughter. She loves the results. Dr. McGarrell and his staff offer quality care and Orthodontic treatment. You should definitely consider a consultation for your Orthodontic needs with Dr. McGarrell's office. We were very happy with McGarrell Orthodntics. The staff is very attentive and professional. They are very accommodating and alway ran on time. The worked us in when we had an emergency also. I would recommend them to anyone. Very gentle with patients. Also, we love the train that runs through the office.

The staff is friendly and professional. We love their two convenient locations...we use our hometown La Vernia office during the school year and seamlessly transition to the Schertz office when our student is in S.A. for summer activities!
