Dr. Ian R. McDonald moved to Hickory, NC, as a child in 1988. He graduated from Saint Stephens High School. He received a BS in psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill. After shadowing several local dentists and volunteering with NC Missions of Mercy, he decided that dentistry was his calling. He became operations manager for NC Missions of Mercy, where he developed a strong interest in providing dental care to those in need. He attended UNC dental school, where he served as a class officer, received the 2016 Spurgeon Dental Class Award and the Robert Tormey Award.
After graduating from UNC dental school, he and his wife, Janelle (also a UNC dental school graduate), moved back to Hickory, where Ian's parents and siblings all live. They are looking forward to becoming involved in the community and volunteering with local dental outreach programs. Ian is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, the Seattle Study Club, the Western Piedmont Dental Society, and serves on the CVCC School of Hygiene Advisory Committee.
When not involved with their dentistry, Ian and Janelle enjoy birding, boating on Lake Hickory, local sightseeing, and frequenting local restaurants. They live with their two cats, Abby and Pete, who always keep the household interesting.

I have been going here for years. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. They provide excellent client education and do a wonderful job providing high levels of comfort during both hygiene appointments and procedures.

Excellent and friendly staff. They always greet you by first name and with a smile. Dr McDonald is the best dentist I have been to. He is very patient and honest with his assessment and dental care plan. I would happily recommend him and his staff to friends and family.

Had two wisdom teeth pulled today and a filling. Dr. McDonald and his staff gets a five star rating from me. Very polite, and I'd recommend this dentistry to anyone. Always a pleasure to been seen here. His assistant went above and beyond to make me comfortable and let me know each and every procedure details. Super place .

Coming in as a new patient, this experience was the BEST. They made you fill very welcomed!!! And that Wanda is AWESOME!!! She was very thoughtful and explained each step!!! Dr McDonald is a excellent dentist. His staff is very nice and patient. Dr McDonald has completed excellent dental work for me. He is very gentle and knowledgeable. My teeth looks great and his work makes me want to smile again. I would recommend McDonald's Family Dentistry to anyone. You want regret it. McDonald Family Dentisry is hands down the best dentist I have ever gone to. I am very anxious about going to the dentist and each time I have gone they have made sure to make me feel relaxed and comfortable. They go out of their way to make sure that you are not afraid or anxious. Each tech, as well as the dentist,is very knowledgeable and walks you through each step of whatever process they are doing. Every employee in the office is so personable, caring and attentive. I feel like they address all of my questions and go out of their way to make sure my needs are met. I appreciate this facility so much. I would recommend this facility to anyone especially if you have anxiety about the dentist. Thank you!!!

Incredible dentist and staff!! Due to having extreme anxiety I have avoided going to a dentist for many years. I will not avoid it any longer because Dr. McDonald and his staff took really good care of me. They made sure I was comfortable and told me step by step what was happening. Best dentist I have ever been to!

Had a fantastic first visit with my almost 3 yo. He got to pick his favorite Netflix series opened wide for Dr McDonald and got prizes and high fives. I was so worried about making his first experience positive but it couldn't have gone better. So much patience and such a great environment! Thanks so much would highly recommend!
