I have always loved both art and science, so orthodontics is the perfect profession for me. I truly love what I do! I feel very blessed to be able to spend my day helping people improve their lives by giving them a healthy and beautiful smile.

It is an exciting day for the patients when their braces are put on, but its an even bigger day when they come off. The enormous sense of accomplishment that is felt by the patients and parents on that special day is shared by me and my entire staff!

I completed my undergraduate studies atBrigham Young Universitybetween1991 and1996, andI met my future wife, Lisa, there. We were married four days before I started dental school at The University of Southern California(USC), where Ireceived my Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) with honors in May 2001.

I was accepted into theUSC orthodontics residency program, whereI spent the next three yearslearning the art of orthodontics with five other residents and some of the best orthodontists in the world. It was an amazing experience! I graduated in 2004 with a masters degree and certificate in orthodontics, and have been perfecting the art every day since.

My family and I settled in the St Louis area in 2005and have loved being part of the community.Ive been married to Lisa since 1996and we have three teenage boysParker, Scott, and Thomasand a King Charles Cavalier named Padme.

I feel that its an exciting day for my patients when their braces are first put on. I try to make it an occasion to remember, because it is the beginning of the journey to the best smile of your life. To me, orthodontics is about taking something that has great potential and making it perfect. Thus, the biggest day of any treatment is when my patients braces come off. We all feel a sense of accomplishment.

We recognize that all our patients are unique and deserve to receive orthodontic care that reflects their individual needs. The staff has always been nice and charming to me. The only down side I can truly say is scheduling is absolutely awful! They are booked CONSTANTLY so if you break a bracket or a wire you won't get seen for at least a month. It's so hard to get a appointment here.

The McDermott's office is cheerful and calm. The hygienists are all friendly and helpful. Everyone is very patient with any questions you may have, even ones that the patient's nervous brain (my brain) may have forgotten. Thank you McDermott orthodontist group for taking the fear out of going to the dentist.

For my 1st appointment I met with Debbie. Who I believe is the office manager I'm not quite clear on her role. She was giving my daughter and myself information regarding Invisalign or metal/wire braces. My daughter of course had to have metal braces. She had no problems with her braces. They were placed perfectly and she's never had any major complaints besides the rubber bands popping off and tearing. However, Debbie told me a ton of negative things about Invisalign. Such as patients have returned them several times because they get tired of taking them in and out of their mouths. They stain and make your teeth appear to be yellow. You have to constantly take them out when you eat or drink which causes a lot of patients to not see improvements. She spoke as if they would be a pain. She praised the metal wire braces and told me nothing negative about them. She told me I could use special floss and tooth picks to clean, they would be in 24hrs so I could ensure my teeth would stay straight etc. The paperwork she showed me at this time listed the metal braces as being more expensive. But I trusted her opinion I mean after all she is the healthcare professional. The braces were awful for me, couldn't eat, drink or chew for several days. I waited a week before I called but the worst part was the tearing away at my lips from the braces. She spoke to me in the most irritating adolescent voice ever. I explained to her she didn't tell me about this cutting. She goes oh yea that's common with metal braces just put some wax on it. Tried to have me pay to switch, which I found to be absolutely unfair I feel she should have told me the cons of both devices and not praise one so I can make a sound decision for myself. After going back and forth about that with her I was able to get switched to Invisalign. Which is why I came there in the first place. So here we are today.... unfortunately we're in the middle of a pandemic. Which I understand I called today to make my regularly scheduled payment. In the midst of that I asked them when we could expect an appt. they're office opened last week my attachment for my Invisalign broke off two months ago while eating a cheeseburger. My daughter needs routine maintenance, some of the rubber bands have torn off. and through the midst of a crisis our payments have been on time even though I can't receive services. I'm told well she was only suppose to be seen seven days ago. We're going to see people who should have already had appts first and we'll call you when we know when we can schedule her. I explained to her that we're paying for services that we're not receiving I would like to at least know when I can expect a call a week, two weeks, three weeks something. She told me she was going to get the manager. I told her Im just looking for a time frame not an exact date. She told me she wouldn't be able to tell me so she had to get the manager. I said please don't she's going to talk to me like I'm a toddler. I really would like to avoid that I'm just looking for a time frame. She puts me on hold and Debbie comes to the phone of course she starts talking to me like a toddler, very passive aggressive. Explaining to me what a pandemic is and omg. I explained to her that I didn't need to be talked to like that we signed paperwork with deadlines that had things listed we both needed done in addition to the other stuff I listed and if I'm paying and not receiving the service it will delay the improvements on her teeth. Which is going to cause her to be in the braces longer and cost me more money. I just wanted to know when we could expect an appt. I explained to her what was going on. I told her I would like a time frame that's all I didn't even ask to speak to her and she told me I could cancel services and have the braces removed on June 10th. I said wait what no one ever even told me a time frame that's what I was asking she was so rude like I was given that date and it wasn't good enough. I have such a headache after talking to this woman.

Just got my braces on yesterday by Jess who Is great! She made me feel comfortable and she did a great job! This place has a lot more smiling faces like her too. Everyone literally greets you with a smile or a hello. However I didn't care for the First Lady who spoke with me. She answers the phone and stuff she was just not the same as everyone else. She doesn't seem genuinely happy with her job. She's kind of rude and not friendly like EVERYONE else. But I don't let just one person ruin it for everyone else. I'd just steer clear of her. She's a real Debbie downer. I don't know about you but a smile can go a long way with me. I've been to both locations now in Arnold and in florissant same people same great service! Get your braces here seriously!

Dr. McDermott is my favorite doctor (and I have more than a couple) he's the sweetest person ever and made me feel less self conscious. The staff is extremely helpful and obviously skilled. They get you in and out and the entire time you're in the chair, one of their priorities are making sure you're comfortable. I'd recommend this office to anyone. Oh did I mention their Arnold office HAS A FREAKING WII. Makes going to the Orthodontist soooo much cooler and easier. If you have little ones I think they would like it here.

I do not recommend McDermott Ortho- I have had 2 children through their office for braces and was disappointed in the way they handled my youngest son at the onset, he has autism and the first tech was incredible mean to him and did not try to understand him and let her lack of compassion show, it was no surprise as she also had a lack of professionalism at the desk. Dr. McDermott switched him to another tech and personally called me to check on my son. Dr. McDermott was was able to correct his underbite in phase 1 of his ortho journey. My older son arrived to braces with an A-line bite but overall fairly straight teeth, through the magic of phase 1 his braces where removed and he had a perfect smile. However, he then went through puberty and his teeth developed gaps all across the front as his jaw grew and his natural facial changes occurred and I was introduced to PHASE 2, this is where you pay for braces again, okay, should be easy to fix, maybe a year....After a year my sons A-line bite had returned and his molars don't touch! But Dr. McDermott stated "that's as good as I can get it" What he meant was: You only paid for my 12 month phase 2 and I'm not going to fix it for free. My sons front teeth sit on top of each other and his back teeth do not touch, he can't even enjoy eating steak! And because his front teeth bang together when he chews he now has a few chips. So disappointed. He will be getting braces for a 3rd time in a few weeks and I will be 100% out of pocket because of Dr. McDermott's poor management of his smile the insurance has been maxed.
