Since graduating in 1997, Dr. Shelly L. McColm has been providing her patients with exceptional comprehensive orthodontic care. Highly educated and trained, Dr. Shelly earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, graduating with Honors, from the University of Missouri in 1987. She then attended UMKC School of Dentistry, obtaining her Doctorate of Dental Surgery, in 1991. In 1992, she completed her Advanced Education in General Dentistry with the United States Air Force and received her Certificate in Orthodontics from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1997.

Dr. Shelly feels it is important to stay on the cutting-edge of orthodontics. Thus, she maintains memberships in many prestigious professional organizations to keep up-to-date on the latest techniques and technology. She is currently a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Southwest Society of Orthodontists, Kansas Association of Orthodontists, Tweed Study Club of the Midwest, American Dental Association, Kansas Dental Association, First District Dental Society, and the Douglas County Dental Society.

In her personal life, Dr. Shelly has been married to her husband for more than 25 years. They have two daughters and a Maltese named Oscar. Dr. Shelly gives back to her local community by donating to numerous charities and youth organizations. She spends most of her free time in activities related to her children. She also enjoys reading, biking, traveling, and going to the lake.

Liberty was born and raised in Lawrence. She has always had an interest in the dental field. Liberty is very outgoing and loves to help others. She enjoys being a mother to her little girl and spending time with her family and friends.

Sandy was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has been in the dental field for more than 37 years and has been working for Dr. Shelly since 1998. Sandy has been married to her husband Greg for more than 30 years. They have two children, Lisa and Michael. Sandy's world revolves around her grandchildren and reading.

Missy was born and raised in Leavenworth, Kansas. She has more than 25 years of experience in orthodontics. Missy and her husband Mike have a daughter and son. She enjoys hiking, kayaking, and spending time with her family.

Lori was born and raised in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High. She had braces as an adult with Dr. McColm and became interested in orthodontics during her treatment. Lori is married to Dennis, and they have two sons and a daughter. She enjoys walking, boating, and camping with her family.

Melena grew up in Nortonville, KS and was treated by Dr. McColm as a teenager. Undergoing orthodontic treatment initiated her interest in the dental field. Melena graduated from Pinnicle Career Institute for dental assisting in 2020. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Melena also loves shopping!linical Assistant

Katy was born in San Diego, California but grew up in Topeka, Kansas where she graduated from Washburn Rural High School. Katy has been working in the dental field for 15 years with experience in dental laboratory, general dentistry and pediatric dentistry. Katy is a clinical assistant as well as our lab technician. She lives in McLouth, Kansas and enjoys spending time with her daughter Cecily, craft days and motorcycle adventures with her boyfriend, Jake.

Andreina was raised in Lawrence and is a Lawrence High graduate. She has always had an interest in the dental field and started her dental career at a pediatric dental office prior to working at McColm Orthodontics. Andreina is married to Hugh, and has three boys. She enjoys spending time with her family, dancing, and walking her dog.

Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the proper position.

Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can now choose clear or metal brackets and, in some cases, the color of your appliance. Wires are far less noticeable, and the latest materials are designed to move teeth faster with more comfort. Today, any age is a great age to wear braces!

Treatment time varies and can last between one and three years, depending on several factors including age, treatment method, and how minor or severe your case is. A big factor in a successful treatment is you! The more involved and diligent you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. For children, receiving interceptive or early treatment can also help provide a quicker treatment time.
