Dr. Carrillo is a native of Edinburg. She graduated from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch in 1989. After graduating from dental school she returned to the Rio Grande Valley where she did a 1 year fellowship with the Texas Department of Health under the direction of Dr. Jerry Felkner of Harlingen Texas. During this time she worked with underprivileged children on a school based mobile unit that traveled from Brownsville to Rio Grande City Texas. In 1991 she became director of the Dental Clinic at Community Action Council of South Texas in Rio Grande City. After 5 years of working there, she decided it was time to delve into the world of private practice. In 1996 Dr. Carrillo opened the doors to her new practice where she has been serving the community of Edinburg and surrounding areas for over 21 years.
Dr. Carrillo has been a volunteer to medical and dental missions to Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. She is also a volunteer dentist for Proyecto Desarrollo Humano, a charitable organization run by Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (ICM). Dr. Carrillo is a member of the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry. Continuing education has always been a priority of Dr. Carrillo's. She has logged over 1000 hours of continuing education courses in many topics ranging from esthetic dentistry to implant dentistry. She has attended The Pankey Institute, a very prestigious center for higher learning located in Key Biscayne Florida.
Philosophy of CareDr. Emma Carrillo and the staff at McColl Dental Center believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.
It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. Dr. Emma Carrillo understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.
Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at McColl Dental Center work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the 78539 area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.
Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.
Q: Are baby teeth really that important to my child?A: Primary, or baby, teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.
Q: What should I do if my child has a toothache?A: First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.
Q: How do dental sealants work?A: Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.
Q: How do I know if my child is getting enough fluoride?A: Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your childs primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.
Q: What can I do to protect my teeth during sporting events?A: Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.
Q: How safe are dental X-rays?A: There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Very professional and a great overall experience! I highly recommend coming here to McColl Dental Center. Dr. Carrillo and her staff were all very friendly. From the front desk personnel to the Doctors chair, they were all very helpful and professional. The front desk helped me understand the billing process and Dr. Carrillo took the time to explain to me the procedure she was about to perform on my teeth, she also took the time to answer any questions that I had.Thank you all for helping me get my smile back!

Love the entire staff at McColl Dental Center because they dedicate themselves with providing you with the best dental care/experience possible. The dental hygienists are fantastic and extremely friendly and the office staff is always on point with scheduling you accordingly and helping you reschedule when and if needed. Lastly, Dr. Carillo is extremely Kind and very Thorough when it comes to her patients. Absolutely enjoy coming here and have done so for many years.

My dentist Dr Emma Carrillo is such a great dentist! She puts me at ease when I feel anxious for any procedure I will have, especially when it concerns an emergency. She is a miracle worker and she always comes through with the best way to help me. I believe it is so because she is a great listener. Her staff is super friendly and professional and once I step in the waiting room I can feel the sense of calm. I am extremely pleased with the work done on my teeth and happy with the cost as well!

Look no further for dental care in the RGV. This place is it! For years I have been commuting to a dentist up north, fearing that the cost of dental care here was unsustainable. Not to mention that finding a dentist you can trust is just as difficult as finding the right hairstylist or romantic partner: it takes time! To my and my husband's great relief, I have finally found "the one"! The entire staff at McColl Dental Center (from the receptionists Adam & Rosie, to techs Irene & Joanna, the hygienist Sally, and of course the esteemed dentist, Dr. Emma Carrillo) make one dynamic team! Collectively, they have redeemed my hope in dental care in our region and made me feel like family instead of a walking dollar sign. Their skill as professionals is also elevated indeed. My teeth feel SO clean! Instead of an assembly line-vibe, even their space is welcoming and calming. From the beautiful waiting room where the history channel is playing (love that!) to the patient rooms overlooking a serene garden with a pond waterfall to boot, this place feels like home. Who says that about a dental office honestly?! No one! Plus, how outstanding is it that Dr. Carrillo took the time herself to sit down with me and discuss a recent surgery I had before applying anything to my teeth that might counteract medications I've been prescribed. I find this degree of initiative, motivation, and energy to be, as I said, outstanding in any venue, but coming in the midst of what I imagine is a consistently busy schedule, and also in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, I find it doubly so. Compassionate individuals like Dr. Carrillo and her all-star staff are rare gems which come along but very infrequently. I feel their sincerity in every conversation we have. Their kindness is in engraved in heart. Next step is for me to bring my kids here too, and I can't wait to do so! Thank you McColl Dental Center!
