Because its the right thing to do. You hear that phrase a lot at Mary Greeley Medical Center. It describes the philosophy that guides our delivery of high quality, cost effective patient care. Mary Greeley is a 220-bed regional hospital that provides healthcare to the residents of a 13-county area in central Iowa. The counties include Story, Boone, Marshall, Greene, Hamilton, Hardin, Sac, Calhoun, Wright, Carroll, Tama, Dallas and Polk. We are doing whats right for our patients in many ways, including:

  • Inpatient and outpatient services that support a continuum of care for our patients, including surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, diabetes and nutrition care, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, gastroenterology, mental health services, palliative care, home health care, hospice care, rehabilitation and more.
  • A comfortable and convenient healing environment, which includes spacious patient rooms in a newly constructed six-story tower, and large labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum(LDRP) rooms in our Birthways obstetrics unit.
  • Amenities that contribute to the overall patient and visitor experience, including a full-service cafeteria, a Gift Shop, Burgie's Coffee Shop, art exhibits, and a beautiful rooftop garden on the 5th floor of our new west patient tower.
  • Partnerships with all the major physician clinics in the area, including McFarland Clinic PC, a multi-specialty clinic; Doran Clinic for Women, which provides gynecology and obstetrics services; the Iowa Heart Center, the largest heart specialty clinic in Iowa; Primary Health Care, which provides services for people who may be uninsured or underinsured; and Wolfe Eye Clinic, which specializes in eye care.
  • Mary Greeley Medical Center, which opened in 1916, was a gift to the city of Ames from Captain Wallace Greeley. Today, Mary Greeley continues to be city-operated but governed by an elected Board of Trustees. The hospital is not tax supported. Rather, expenses are covered by hospital-generated revenue. As a non-profit medical center, our revenues go back into the operation of the hospital, leading to better facilities, better technology and better-trained staff to provide excellent patient care.

Expect outstanding care from the only hospital in Iowa to have achieved a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nations highest recognition for performance excellence, and Magnet Designation, the nations top recognition for nursing quality.

Since 1987, the Baldrige Award has been the highest recognition for performance excellence in the nation. It is the nations only presidential award for performance excellence, recognizing U.S. organizations and businesses that have shown an unceasing drive for innovative solutions to complex challenges, visionary leadership and operational excellence. In 2019, Mary Greeley became the first organization in Iowa to achieve this prestigious level of recognition.

Baldrige judges evaluate organizations in seven areas: leadership; strategy; customers; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce; operations; and results. Among the highlights of the Baldrige judges evaluation of Mary Greeley are:

  • Workforce commitment to the medical centers Doing Whats Right tagline, as demonstrated through the medical centers patient-centered scheduling program, Patient and Family Advisory Council, and administrative rounding with staff.
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) chooses hospitals for Magnet Recognition. It is considered the gold standard for nursing and the highest honor given by the ANCC. Mary Greeley is the only hospital in central Iowa to have it.

Research indicates that organizations that have received Magnet recognition have lower rates of patient falls, and higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help, and discharge information. Magnet-recognized organizations also have higher levels of job satisfaction.

The recognition came after a rigorous application and review process, which included a site visit by Magnet Recognition Program evaluators. With emphasis on quality, patient care practices, and performance outcomes, the Magnet Recognition Program measures how an organization involves nursing in leadership and decision-making, and provides nursing staff with tools and training to drive continual improvement and innovation.

Each issue of Mary Greeley Medical Centers Health Connect magazine is filled with compelling patient stories, the latest news on new patient care technology and programs, and helpful health information.

I have been receiving care for over four months from the three physical therapists. They are all great, skilled and knowledgeable in giving me the pre and post op care I needed to recover well from my total knee replacement surgery. I highly recommend this place.
