Marina Pettengill DDS - General dentist in Plainville, MA

Dr. Pettengill was very instrumental in developing all policies for sterilization methods in a hospital-based dental center. A standard required not only by OSHA and the Department of Health, but also by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO). This is an exceptional asset of which we are so proud of since hospitals are typically held to a higher standard than most dental centers. Please feel free to ask us about our methods when you visit.

  • Founded and established the first dental department in St. Joseph Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island and was that facility's Dental Director from 1995 to 2000. The Dental Center boasts of its six operatories, serving a current patient base of 4,000 patients.

Bad experience. Had a cleaning done by Marina Pettengill and she complained that she can't find a dental assistant to do the cleanings for her. A little unprofessional. I thought the desk help was nice and helpful until they made me sit in the hall for 20 minutes when I was on time for my appointment. I left and they called me confused. I rescheduled and had my appointment scheduled the 1st of July for weeks and then the day of they call me to say they are closing early for the holiday. Who makes this decision the day of when you have appointments scheduled? Was told I would get a call back to reschedule because she couldn't find any other appointment for me. Still no call back as of July 26th and I even called twice today and both times was sent to voicemail.. Alll set. I'll take the red flags as a sign and go elsewhere. UPDATE- After leaving this review her husband messaged me on Facebook defending her and attacking me for my review. He proceeded to harass my work asking to speak to the owners of the company about an issue he has. I had blocked him on Facebook after he messaged me but I unblocked him to let him know he is now harassing me and I will get the police involved if needed. UNPROFESSIONAL AND HARRASSING.

Very pleased painless fillings she took her time and did a great job. Also the hygienist didn't leave me feeling like I was drowning in my own saliva

She is very gentle, caring and truly dedicated to her dentistry. She puts me at ease as I get anxious. I would recommend her for her expertise and compassion to her patients. I have many friends and family that also go to her office and feel the same way I do.

Wonderful experience with the Dr.! I was quite nervous as I hadn't been to dentist in several years ( a bit embarrassed too) !! She made me feel very comfortable & far less anxious than I expected!! Took her time with me & did not rush me out like my prior dentist did! I highly recommend this Dr. to all!!

I am 50 years old, and because of my own failure to brush sufficiently in my early teen years, I have fillings on most of my teeth. Over the years I have been treated by numerous dentists, ranging from mediocre to top notch. A decade ago I was referred by a good friend to try Marina.... "she is really good". I immediately realized I was working with a team of perfectionists and felt relieved to be in good hands. I agree that she sees every thing in deep detail and she does some preventive work other dentists might delay. But she discussed everything and developed a long term care plan. Each year we did what work we could with the insurance and amount I could afford. Over time she replaced a dozen small and another dozen big old deep amalgam fillings with compromised edge seals. She has a firm sure hand with sensitivity as she approaches the nerve. I was fortunate that she got to things in time and I never felt any serious pain. Slowly but surely my teeth got better and better. Now all I need is cleanings. I am a totally satisfied customer and I highly recommend Marina Pettengill DDS

BEWARE. I went in for a cleaning and was told I had 9 cavities. I hadn't been to a dentist in years and this is the first time I picked my own dentist, so I thought it best to trust her. She gave me the first filling-come to find out 2 weeks later that she actually did 2 fillings right next to each other. I called in a week after concerned that my pain wasn't improving at all, the receptionist said, and I quote, "okay, well some pain and sensitivity is normal a week up to, uh, how long ago did you say it was done? (1 week) Yeah, up to 2 weeks is normal." I didn't feel great about that answer and I know now that it all depends on how deep the cavity was, it could hurt for months- the thing is, it isn't supposed to stop you from chewing or drinking for that long, it might just be a little sensitive- they should have taken me back in to fix it after that 1st week. Let's see, I came in to get the first filling "fixed". When I was explaining what happened after she asked me to, her phone rang and she picked it up while I was mid-sentence- turned her back completely and answered it without excusing herself. She had me drink cold water and point to the tooth that hurt twice, after I already told her which one thrice before that. Then she ground it down more, which it didn't even feel like it needed that (it didn't) then she asked me if I wanted to do another filling while I was here. I figured I might as well get it over with, right? BIG mistake. She injected the novicane in the wrong spot twice before she moved back near the tooth she was working on, she injected it incorrectly, so it still hurts now, 5 days later, causing stinging when I eat and pain when I smile... thanks to "Dr." Pettengill, it hurts to even smile... She left the room for maybe ten minuted to talk in the hallway and I had to wait with all this stuff in my mouth, which is fine, but she didn't even excuse herself or say anything when she came back-just disappeared and left me hanging. Her assistant left the room frequently-not sure if that's normal- but about 5 of those times she re-entered with a comment like, "You're still trying to get that one?" or, "You're still working on that?" or, my favorite, "Did that break?". Yes it did, whatever it was broke off in my mouth after what felt to me like a struggle and she never said anything to me about it, so I was just worrying what that feeling was that didn't feel right at all, then I watched her take pieces of something out of my mouth. She explained things terribly, vague and without medical terms. She didn't seem to be listening to anything I said and when I requested she work on a "cavity" on the same side that was already in pain, she refused with no real explanation, just, "no, no, that side will be fine within 3 days, so I'm working on the other side." I try to ask her not to do that a different way and she says the exact same thing to me. Overall, she seemed very distracted, like her mind was elsewhere. She seemed annoyed and off-put by any and all of my questions. And I don't believe I ever got one useful response out of her. The same day I got the 1 fillings "fixed" and the next 2, I quickly found someone to give me a second opinion. This doctor made eye contact, answered my questions fully with medical jargon and laymens terms when I asked for them. He acted unbiased and open minded, gave me his undivided attention, and here's the kick- he assured me I have NO cavities. When I first asked him, "what about my other cavities?" he leaned forward confused and said nothing, so I said, "...Do I have other cavities?" He said that in his professional opinion, he couldn't see any. I now don't believe I ever had cavities, I never had any toothaches or sensitivity... until AFTER Pettengill sabotaged my decent oral health. I can actually think of more thinks that made me really uneasy around her, but I believe I've said enough. Good luck finding a dentist out there!
