There are numerous ways that children can be treated. We acknowledge that not every child is the same and different personalities require different approaches. We do not believe there is only one way to deal with children. Some children need more TLC while others do better with a firmer approach. In rare cases there are children who do require sedation or general anesthesia in order for treatment to be completed safely. However, we do not believe that sedating children is always the best first approach, particularly for simple procedures. Simply drugging a child is not the solution for overcoming fears and anxiety. Instead we believe that molding behavior management through explanation and information is the best way to approach most patients. Through basic parenting and simple psychological principles Dr. Malcolm and his team are able to help mold a childs behavior into a good dental patient without altering a childs natural personality. This allows the child to develop stronger coping skills and more independence.

Dr. Malcolm believes in treating disease in the mouth. Some procedures are difficult for kids to go through due to age or inherent fears. However, sometimes emergency situations or urgent care must be rendered. In these cases, it is not our philosophy to postpone treatment until good dental behavior is present. Rather, the treatment options will be presented anddental carewill be provided safely and as gently as possible despite behavior. This is done to prevent further pain and infection.

Do not send your kids here. My son is afraid of going to the dentist and they made it worse. They were irritated and yelled at my son. They should not be working with kids. The best decision we made was switching to a new dentist.

My almost 5 year old needed 2 teeth pulled due to cavities/infection. Yes it took a while to get the initial consult but like any dentist office he is very busy. I was informed that either my child could have the procedure done in the office if she was cooperative or be sedated at the local hospital. I chose the office. The day of the procedure everything was on time. Unfortunately to no fault of the office the "laughing gas" was ineffective at calming my child after the initial novacaine injections. I was told that she could either reschedule with sedation at the hospital or she could be strapped to a board with Velcro to hold her still. Either option would have been traumatic- hospital means IV which may or may not have included restraint versus restraint for 20 minutes or more for the procedure in the office. I chose to proceed in office. After signing several waivers regarding the restraining of my child the procedure began again. Dr. Malcolms staff deserve a raise. There were 4 staff members who we hands on/ helpful in getting everything set up and keeping her still for the procedure. Yes my child cried periodically during this as any small child would. Needles hurt, keeping your mouth open is uncomfortable, and blood in the mouth doesn't taste good. I can see why some children should be sedated for this. As this can be scary and terrifying. I could tell Dr. Malcolm was stressed as any doctor would be working on a terrified awake child crying while you have to perform delicate dental care inside their mouth. He did a great job of keeping everything going as efficiently as possible under the circumstances. He was never once rude or inappropriate with how he talked to me or my child. I stayed in the room the entire time and remained calm during the event. After the procedure my child was unwrapped, cover in sweat from the whole event. A fan was turned toward here. She recovered well and quickly. Picked out a prize from the "treasure box" on her own and once in the car was smiling. Once home i asked her how everything went at the densist and she said good! She told me she didn't have any mouth pain either. I would recommend any parent to base how you want your child's experience at the dentist to go based on your child's age, prior experiences, personality, and behavior.

Do yourself and your kids a favor and DO NOT bring them here. The staff were ok. However, Dr. Malcolm should NOT be working with children. My son's fear of the dentist was made much worse after seeing Dr. Malcolm. My son was crying while Dr. Malcolm did his work and didn't even try to console him, instead he just shook his head and said "Wow.." and would talk down to him about how he was acting. I understand that an upset child can make dental work more difficult but he is a PEDIATRIC dentist. He should know how to act and talk to children. Afterwards he wanted to get a toy.. Dr. Malcolm said, "No, you don't get a toy because of how you acted". I feel that even though a child is fearful and is crying that a good PEDIATRIC dentist would still try and comfort with a toy or kind words. But not here. I guess the 1 star can be used for how cute the decor is but that's it. Take the extra time and go to one of Rockford's pediatric dentists.

They were so horrible they don't even deserve one star. My daughter and I had the same horrible experience with Dr. Malcolm as several other negative reviews. My 4 year old daughter went in for her first check-up and everything went fine. Dr. Malcolm said she needed several cavities filled and an infected tooth pulled. They couldn't get her in for several months. When I called to schedule her visit, I told them we were only going to have the infected tooth pulled. When I took her in today they had everything set up for the tooth to be pulled and several cavities filled. When I informed Dr. Malcolm we would only be pulling the infected tooth he questioned my decision several times than agreed to take just the tooth. One of the dental hygienists was not helping to comfort my daughter and told her in a short tone she needed to "Calm down." I immediately told her to leave and they had another dental hygienist come in. They were in a rush to get my child in and out. When I questioned if my daughter was numb enough to have the tooth removed at that time he became upset with me and said this is why we like to put them under. Dr. Malcolm was downright rude and unprofessional. As soon as he found out he wouldn't be making more money from my daughters appointment he quickly changed his attitude towards me. I will be taking my daughter to a new dentist. I will never take her back and no one else should take their child either.

Dr Malcolm told me I needed to "cut the cord" and that my 3 year was "too dependent" on me because he was anxious about his first dentist appointment. He also told my child he wasn't allowed to cry and that if he continues after a while I won't be allowed to sit by him to calm him down. Definitely won't be going back

I have gone to Malcolm Pediatric Dentistry twice with my 3 year old daughter. They have been very friendly, compassionate, and professional. The first time I came with my daughter to Dr. Malcolm's practice was for a second opinion due to an accident that caused trauma to her front teeth. We had gone to another dentist that recommended pulling two of her front teeth. I was very concerned because that would leave her without 2 front teeth for 4 to 5 years. I was immediately able to get in to see Dr. Malcolm for another opinion who thoroughly examined her and recommended leaving her teeth alone. We took his advice and 4 months later her teeth are back into proper position and healthy. We could not be more pleased with this office and we will not go anywhere else!
