Dr. Marcum attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and is a graduate in Marine Biology from The University of Southern California in 1979. He received his dental education and endodontic specialty training at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Southern California in 1984 and 1986 respectively.
Dr. Marcum taught undergraduate endodontics at The University of Southern California. He has served as a mentor for office design with The American Association of Endodontists as well as been a member of The Scientific Sessions Committee with the California Dental Association. Dr. Marcum has written and contributed to, numerous articles in the field of endodontics. He served as President of the Central Coast Dental Society for the year 2019-2020.
Dr. Marcum was raised in Santa Maria where his father practiced general dentistry for forty six years until his retirement in 2003 and his mother was a dental hygienist for forty years. Dr. Marcum started his endodontic career in Torrance, California where he practiced for five years. He then returned to the Central Coast and established his practice in San Luis Obispo in 1992.

Update: they claim i wasn't a patient in their response. But i was. This is the correct dentist I've reviewed! All 3 root canals he did weren't good. I have to get 2 redone and one is beyond repair and has to be extracted. Insurance doesn't cover redos. So i wasted time, money, emotional distress and insurance coverage. Now i have to pay $3000 more for everything. Im on a fixed income due to disability so this is outrageous. I can recommend a better endodontist. I needed a fourth root canal and had Dr. Gholian help me. It's healing perfect. See him instead, you'll be in better hands.

I was referred to Dr. Marcum's office by my dentist Dr. Copp's office. I have an extremely traumatic past with a past dentist. I now have a lot of phobia about getting my teeth worked on. Dr. Marcum's staff was super helpful in scheduling and letting me know what to expect ahead of time. I appreciated getting the cost and the payment info ahead of time explained to me. During the root canal, I didn't feel pain. After I experienced some discomfort. That went away quickly. I am super grateful to have experienced his talented work after having such excruciatingly painful experiences in the past. I would recommend him highly to those looking to get work on their teeth done in SLO.

Unfortunately I've been to a lot of dentists and have had many root canals. My experience with Dr. Marcum has been amazing! It can be a traumatic experience with some dentists, but not with Dr Marcum!! His whole process from beginning to end is masterful! Best ever, Highly recommend!

This was my 4th root canal over multiple years and by far the best experience. Dr Marcum & his expert assistant ensured my comfort and explained each step. I was in severe pain for multiple days prior to the procedure and I'm grateful they worked me in sooner vs later. It's great to know they're here in SLO if-when another dental emergency arises.

My experience during my recent root canal of an upper molar was something I certainly did not look forward to..who would? That being said..I felt no pain or discomfort during the procedure with the exception of being in an uncomfortable jaw position which is hardly avoidable. Dr Marcum did a good job and I had very little discomfort after the procedure and did not take any additional NSAIDs for pain.

Took me in during the Covid lockdown as an emergency. They worked well as a team and got me fixed up quickly. The doc and his assistant worked well together like a well oiled machine. Everything was explained to me in advance, including the needle to numb me :-). I give them rave reviews. Ron

Dr Marcum and staff were polite, courteous and respectful. Went in for a root canal and was the most quick and painless dentist visit I've ever had. Everyone was warm and welcoming, highly recommend!

This was my first and hopefully my last root canal. I was expecting something horrible, but it wasn't bad at all! The office people were very nice and Dr. Marcum was very professional and efficient. Great experience, for a root canal!
