The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) is the nations largest medical college and is the only Academic Health Center in the osteopathic profession. Physicians and administrators at the Millcreek Community Hospital saw the growing demand for more physicians and opened LECOM in 1992. With the college and the hospital as the core of a highly innovative medical education system based in Erie, Pa., LECOM has strived to add to the quality of life of our neighbors by bringing total health care to the community. The College brought a new concept in medical fitness and wellness to Erie, built a network of physician offices and has started construction on a senior living center that is introducing a new model of health care for older adults. LECOM offers innovative and affordable education in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy and dental medicine. From campuses in Erie and Greensburg, Pa, Bradenton, Fla. and Elmira, NY, LECOM provides student-centered pathways to prepare the next generation of health care professionals.

To prepare students for the challenges of modern medicine, LECOM recognizes that students learn in different ways. The LECOM Erie Campus is the only medical school in the country with five student-centered learning pathways for the first two years of education in osteopathic medicine.

  • LECOM offers ground-breaking new curriculum to attract more students to family medicine and primary care specialties. LECOMs Primary Care Scholars Pathway will condense four years of medical college into a highly structured, three-year curriculum, focusing on skills needed to become a family doctor or primary care physician.
  • The Problem-Based Learning Pathway (PBL) is a nationally recognized innovative approach to medical education, offering students the opportunity to study the biomedical and clinical sciences by utilizing medical case studies in a small-group environment.
  • The Directed Study Pathway (DSP), originally the Independent Study Pathway, offers students the opportunity to study the basic science core curriculum and medical systems curriculum at his or her pace, using lists of highly structured learning objectives compiled into self-directed learning modules used in combination with textbooks, resource guides and small group study.
  • Consistent with LECOMs core value of creating student-centered education, three distinct learning pathways are offered for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Degree which provides students the option of choosing a pathway most suited to their learning needs.

  • In Erie, an accelerated three-year pathway is offered enabling students to complete the PharmD degree in three calendar years using an innovative, year-round curriculum that allows graduates to enter the job market one year earlier that traditional pharmacy graduates;
  • In Bradenton, students follow the traditional four-year pathway starting with two years of basic sciences preparing for clinical science courses in year three and advanced practice experiences in year four;
  • Or students may study online in the four-year distance education pathway where they take the majority of courses online and attend classes for a few weeks each summer in Bradenton to meet laboratory and casework requirements.
  • The LECOM Erie Campus offers a Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program with two semesters of biomedical science courses designed to improve a students academic credentials prior to entering medical, dental or pharmacy school.

  • Masters in Healthcare Services Administration Available through distance education, the Masters in Healthcare Services Administration (MHSA) prepares administrators prepared to meet the challenges of managing hospitals, pharmacies, public health organizations, and private practices.
  • Master of Science in Biomedical Ethics LECOM has developed the Master of Science in Biomedical Ethics (MSBE) distance education program to fill the need for exceptionally prepared healthcare personnel. MSBE helps healthcare workers develop cultural competency in todays diverse healthcare environment and demonstrates how ethics education leads to behavioral changes that result in a higher level of professionalism and the delivery of top-quality, patient-centered care.
  • The Master of Science in Medical Education provides courses in effective teaching, administration and leadership to those who desire advanced training in medical education. The program is open to physicians, pharmacists, dentists and basic science faculty. Candidates in the MS Med Ed program are prepared to become medical educators who teach in post-graduate medical education, as preceptors in clinical education, or as faculty at medical, pharmacy or dental schools.

    LECOM created the Lake Erie Consortium for Osteopathic Medical Training (LECOMT) to develop new osteopathic post-graduate training programs. LECOMT began with one hospital and a handful of residency programs and has increased to include 41 teaching hospitals/office sites in seven states, with more than 900 internship, residency and fellowship positions available.

    Physicians who teach at these affiliates and elsewhere may extend his or her medical education knowledge by enrolling in the LECOM Master of Science in Medical Education program. Tuition is free for residents at Millcreek Community Hospital, and LECOM provides tuition discounts for faculty at LECOMT member hospitals.

    LECOM encourages student involvement and leadership in community service activities. Programs such as Bridging the Gaps take students out of the classroom to underserved clinics and community agencies. LECOM has opened a medically integrated health and wellness center near the campus. Open to students and the public, the John M. and Silvia Ferretti Medical Fitness and Wellness Center, located at 5401 Peach Street, Erie, PA, is also a teaching facility where students learn about medical fitness and the relationship between healthy lifestyles and patient care.

    Rochester, N.Y. Rochester Regional Health is expanding its partnership with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) to become the medical schools largest clinical campus. This new partnership will enable Rochester Regional to dramatically increase clinical rotations and feature locations in addition to United Memorial Medical Center where its program began. Now, as part of this 10-year agreement between Rochester Regional Health and LECOM, approximately 100 third and fourth year students will be on clinical rotation across the health system each month.

    This partnership will offer remarkable opportunities for LECOM students to gain exceptional, hands-on training in a variety of settings with a nationally recognized leader in integrated health care, said John Ferretti, D.O., LECOM President and CEO. Further, with such a large number of our students entering Rochester Regional Healths clinical rotation program at facilities across western New York, LECOM will be furthering its goal of improving healthcare for residents and communities in underserved areas.

    Medical school graduates often continue their post-graduate training and establish residency in the geographic area they trained. Rochester Regional Health offers a wide range of residency and fellowship programs for medical students post-graduation.     We are thrilled to partner with Rochester Regional Health to offer critical clinical education for our medical students, said Richard Terry, D.O., Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, LECOM at Elmira. This collaborative agreement offers a unique opportunity for students from the Rochester area, the Southern Tier and Western New York to pursue their collegiate pre-medical training with local colleges and universities affiliated with LECOM, and then complete their clinical training with the Rochester Regional Health system.     Extremely unprofessional when it's listed that they close at 4:30 and they don't answer their phone after 4:00 this has happened multiple times now very unprofessional and not cool. A lot of people work until 4:00 p.m. and can only call to set up appointments or whatever after 4:00 p.m.. I guess they are SOL if they're trying to contact this place SMH

    Terrible. I called because I had a referral to get my wisdoms out and the lady "jackie", was extremely rude, when I asked what her name was again, she ended the call on me when I was still talking.

    My 50 years as a dental patient, rarely have I been treated with kindness and respect than at the LECOM Erie campus. The dental knowledge and professionalism of the student was outstanding! My student was careful guided by their great faculty. I look forward to my next dental visit.

    I just wanted to say what a wonderful experience I've had with this school of dentistry. I have high anxiety when it comes to the dentist and often put it off. Quite frankly I'd rather have my teeth fall out than go to the dentist but this experience was so different. Upon arriving there was such good energy. Even the receptionist who took my information was a sweetheart. When I met my student doctor Jackie she put my mind at ease. She was so sweet and explained every step of the way what she was doing. I mean this young lady even drew me pictures of my teeth to tell me what she was doing. I could not get over how professional yet charming she was. I had three separate appointments all just a few weeks apart. The process was so easy, so convenient, so relaxed. At the end of the day I just had this one sad tooth that I cracked and needed a filling but it looks beautiful now and I could not be happier. This establishment deserves a 10/10.

    The students are nice but they aren't very experienced. I didn't have a good experience. First, they said I had two cavities in a certain spot when I didn't. Then they filled a cavity but obviously not well enough because I had to go back. The worst thing is, they tried to fill a cavity when I had a TOOTH INFECTION. Who does that? I haven't been here in years and maybe now things are different but when I was going here, it was the worst.

    Appointments are a month out, but I guess that's normal now. I am pleased with how quickly I was called and seen. Liz was delightful. This was my first appointment, so we shall see how it goes.

    So many hoops and loops and they don't listen. I personally fail automated blood pressure machine every time I go to the doctor and theirs is tight and takes a long time to the point where I can feel the panic attack coming on. So Im trying to ask them to use a manual cuff bc I go through this every dr appt. And they are more worried about giving me a cardiovascular lecture (as dentists) so just save yourself the trouble it's not worth the aggravation and your not getting any work done until 3 appts. Later anyways

    The dentist was talking so loud to his student about my daughter's medical history... everyone could hear :( He never came in room to discuss his decision ..left the student alone to handle :(

    I had a frint tooth break off and no insurance so I went to Lecom. Bad mistake, they put me through as very long series of appointments and when it came time to finally put in a new tooth they said they needed to do a root canal which cost more than I could afford. So I talked to my neighbor and he said just get a floor like I did. So I had to set another appointment with the and found out they could do a floor much cheaper. I suspected that they wanted to do the root canal for practice and as much practice as they could get out if me. So the covid thing happened and when they were open again I went in and was told that my molds had been thrown away and I had to start over again. A cleaning appointment a mold appointment a consultation and then the back and forth of making a floor and it going to the lab and back and so on. They refused to just make my flipper tooth and said that they wouldn't deviate from starting all over at x Ray's. They kept insisting everything was a year old but I didnt break my tooth until 9 months prior. I find this to be very unethical

    I feel the student did a great job. My one star comes into affect after 2 extractions, the student ask the teacher to double-check and everything was good to go. A day or so later I was noticing some severe pain felt my gum with my tongue and there was pieces of tooth sticking out of three different spots. From where the two extractions were done. I notify Lecom and they wanted to get me in that very day except they got me in the next day which is cool to me and I thought was very professional. So anyways I go in there to get these pieces of tooth removed the teacher does not numb me or nothing. Had stuck some numbing agent ON the tooth not even the gum. Grabs the plier looking extraction tool and starts pulling away. I was in so much pain my back was arched like a dam rain bow. The teacher ended up snapping the piece off tooth more with more tooth still bedded inside my gum and says i dont have all my tools youll have to wait a month until the students come back. I missed an extra two days off work because of the severe pain i was in do to the UNPROFESSIONALISM. why have me come in if your not properly prepared? I was in the office for a max of 5 minutes. No care or consideration just hey i tried sorry about your luck. No numbing agent. No adequate amount of tools. Need i say more? Unprofessional.
