Dr. Carlin Lawhead joined Drs. John and Robert Trevarthen in 1982 after completing a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City. Following Johns retirement in 1990, Dr. Carlin practiced with Robert until his retirement in 2014. In 2018, Dr. Carlin was proud to welcome his son, Christopher into the practice. Dr. Chris is a fourth-generation dentist. His father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather all graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. They are the first family to have four generations dentists all graduate from the University of Iowa.
Drs. Carlin and Chris Lawhead are proud to have a well-educated, enthusiastic staff of 10 team members, whose cumulative experience totals over 130 years. Together, they strive to provide comprehensive and compassionate dental care to the Muscatine community.
Dr. Carlin Lawhead was born and raised in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, where his brother, father, and grandfather all practiced dentistry. He graduated fromNorthwest Missouri State Universityin 1978 with a B.S. in Zoology. He then attended and graduated fromdental school at the University of Iowa, earning a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1981. Following graduation, he completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City. In July 1982, after completing his residency, Dr. Carlin moved to Muscatine and joined Drs. John and Robert Trevarthen in their dental practice.
Dr. Lawhead is a member of theAmerican Dental Association, theIowa Dental Associationand theAcademy of General Dentistry, where he currently serves as a state board member. He has also served as President of the Davenport District of the Iowa Dental Association. Staying informed on the latest techniques and technologies in dentistry is important to Dr. Lawhead, and he has made a commitment to continuing his education through the years to do so. He has been awarded a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, Signifying over 500 hours of continuing education and the successful completion of a rigorous examination.
Along with Dr. Lawheads involvement in professional organizations, staying actively involved in his local community is also important to him. He is an avid supporter of Muscatine Community Schools as well as a former President of the Muscatine YMCA. He is an active member of the Muscatine Rotary Club, the Muscatine 33 Club, and is very involved with his local church.
Dr. Lawheads wife, Vicki is a retired elementary school teacher from the Muscatine School District. Together, they have two sons: Chris, a dentist that has joined the practice, and Connor, who is attending the University of Iowa. Dr. Carlins hobbies include volunteering, golf, and attending sporting events.

My appointment went good as always, loved my hygienist she did a great job! I had a tooth that was bothering me and she took an X-ray. It turns out that there was nothing going on with it, maybe sinuses and it did not require any further treatment! I have been with Dr. Lawhead for years and am very satisfied and happy to be a patient at his facility! His staff is amazing as well!
