Lane & Associates Family Dentistry – Winston Salem - General dentist in Winston Salem, NC

As much as I would like to consider myself a Southerner, technically I am a Yankee. I was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1953 and lived with my father and grandmother for a few years before being whisked off by my mother to Englewood, California. It was here where my mother met my step-father, a North Carolina native, hence how I eventually found myself in lovely Fuquay-Varina.

My childhood had its ups and downs. We moved around a lot which led me to attend over 10 different schools. I do feel like these experiences molded me into the person I am today, being able to adjust and adapt quickly.

The terms Southern Charm and Southern Hospitality quickly became very real to me. Living in Fuquay-Varina, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. The last few years of high school were my favorite. Senior Class President and leading the High School football team as their captain are some of my fondest memories. Being rooted in FVHS gave me many opportunities and opened many doors. I was a Beta Club member, karate student, Morehead Scholar nominee and so much more.

Phyllis and I set off for Chapel Hill, working hard, as we began our married life together with our sights set on either Medical School or Dental School. This was back in the day where physicians still made house calls and worked long hours at the hospital (yes, I am that old). However, we wanted a family life, so after much thought, we decided on Dentistry and never looked back. This was the 3rd best decision of my life.

In 1975, as I applied to dental school, I had my heart set on UNC, the number one dental school in the country. I did not expect to get in, but I wanted it! Phyllis and I had fallen in love with Carolina. I also applied to Georgetown and Emory as back-ups. Not even thinking about the burden of cost. My mind was blown when I was accepted to all three schools. Obviously, I was very excited. So, another decision had to be madewhere do I go? I loved UNC and the history we had already created there. However, I had fallen in love with Georgetown and its campus and of course the proximity to D.C. The realization of life kicked in when I found out the cost of Georgetown. I knew that I could not afford it. I came from a very poor family and Phyllis, though from a lovely middle-class Southern family, would not have been able to help. UNC being of the cost of the other two schools. the decision was easy. In August of 1976, I began my journey of becoming a dentist.

It has always been important to me to be able to both diagnose and treat patients. I love being able to make people feel better; whether is it is making them laugh, performing surgical procedures, or simply making them feel more confident with their smile.

In 1980 we opened our first practice in Fuquay- Varina, NC. We loved being able to bring quality dentistry to small townsso we kept goingand going! Eventually adding multiple offices to the Triangle area. I am proud to say that we currently have 39+ general practices and 10 specialty practices.

I love animals. I often find myself picking up turtles off the road or rescuing birds down at Emerald Ise. However, dogs are my absolute favorite. My most recent pup, Max, was actually found under the buildings of one of our old dental offices. I am addicted to Diet Rite and love a good cigar.

Dr. Don Lanegraduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry in 1980, following obtaining a degree at UNC in Chemistry from 1972 to 1976. He and his wife Phyllis opened their first Lane & Associates dental practice in Fuquay-Varina, NC in 1980.

Dr. Lane is a member of the ADA, the NC Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry from whom he has received the Prestiges Fellowship Award. Dr. and Mrs. Lane have two children, Ashley and Jessie, and four grandchildren.

I'm floored by the low level of professionalism by the people running the front desk. Twice, I showed up for an appointment that had been booked for months just to learn upon arrival that they canceled my appointment without speaking to me and could not reschedule me another for six months. The final straw: I received a strange diagnosis at my recent appointment, so I told them I wanted to get a second opinion before proceeding with the surgery. I submitted the paper work for my patient scans be transferred to another dentist that I was seeing in six weeks. I checked in with Lane dental three times before my second-opinion dentist appointment - once by email and twice by phone. They kept saying they would complete the transfer of my patient scans "that day". To no surprise, they never sent my scans to the other dentist. I had to pay out of pocket for new scans to be made. I called Lane Dental immediately. Lane Dental's response to this situation was to ignore my phone calls and emails for two months. They finally replied saying that even though my Lane Advantage Plan covered my X-rays, they would not cover the incidental charges I had to pay due to their negligence and withholding of my personal patient data that I had already paid for. They took zero responsibility for their lack of professionalism and failure to do their job as office administrators. And I had to pay the price. This office is a disaster and chaotic. Save yourself the time and find a better dental office with staff that cares more about their patients than their Google Reviews and the money they are stealing from you.

My experience. I went in to have my regular cleaning done, and I told the lady I had a tooth surface that was a little rough, feeling like it was a little cracked and that I'd like a doctor do look. She called a doctor, who said it was not a cavity. Six months later, I tell them the same thing and ask for a doctor to look. They take an x-ray that for them shows nothing, I go back home. Another six months passed, I go in for my regular cleaning, they take an x-ray and say I have to do a root canal!!! Guess on what tooth? The one I had been telling them something wasn't right! I don't know if their x-ray machines are not great or whoever analyzed the x-ray didn't pay close attention. Regardless of which, I paid the price. I used to like this place, but many doctors have changed. I'd not recommend this place now.

Had appointment for mid-July that was canceled by Lane, and was informed they'd call me to reschedule. Got a text message the following week to confirm an appointment the last week of July. I noticed it was for 6:00 in the evening, but figured they were trying to catch up on postponed appointments. Got there at the confirmed time, and the office was empty. Still haven't heard anything about an actual appointment. Bye, Lane!

The staff was so kind and attentive! My dental hygienist was especially impressive. It was clear that she has a lot of experience in the field yet she still took the time to listen and thoughtfully provide answers to all my questions and concerns. I appreciate when healthcare workers don't go on 'autopilot' when treating me. Very impressed with this clinic. I will be referring my friends!

Couldn't be happier with Lane & Associates. My appointments were on time with more than friendly service. Staff and Doctors were informative and genuinely concerned with my health and treatment. I saw several negative reviews that were obviously untrue. I highly recommend this practice.

They said they accepted tricare (military) before my visit and the day I was seen, I gave them my ins info, had a cleaning and they charged me a $60 co-pay. I left on deployment a few weeks later to the middle east. While I was gone, they billed me $1000 for my visit (for the cleaning ONLY). The bill went delinquent and into collections in less than a year. I paid the $1k to clear my name but not one phone call was ever made to my cell phone at all before turning it into collections. They billed it to my mailing address but I wasn't home to receive the correspondence.

This is by far the most chaotic dentist, let alone medical facility I have ever been to. I was having pain in my gum, which I figured was from a wisdom tooth. They were able to get me in quickly which I was happy about. When I got there the dental hygienist didn't even know why I was there, as if she didn't look at my file or someone hadn't put that information in beforehand. They took an X-ray and confirmed it was my wisdom tooth and my gum was also infected, so the dentist prescribed antibiotics and that I get the tooth removed at their office. I went up to the front to schedule an appointment with their oral surgeon 3 weeks out and when I went to leave I realized they didn't know my pharmacy to send in the prescription so i turned around and asked if they needed that info to get me the antibiotics. She said yes and proceeded to get a paper copy of a prescription from the back. I get to the pharmacy and realized no doctor had signed the prescription. I then had to call them and wait an hour for them to get in touch with the pharmacy and get it filled. I had a bad feeling about this place so a week later I called to confirm my appointment 2 weeks out for surgery and the receptionist informed me they were no longer doing oral surgery. I had JUST scheduled this appointment a week ago and no one called to inform me that my appointment had been canceled. I had already called off of work and had my family member call off of work to drive me home that day. She apologized that no one informed me and I asked for a referral to another office. She gave me the number to the office they were referring to which was booked out until January 2023. Without their help, I then had to call around the area to see who could get me in in a reasonable amount of time and called them back to ask for another referral. They forgot to put my date of birth and x ray in the referral. So I had to call AGAIN. This in total was a 2 hour ordeal that they should have been the ones to fix in the first place. I completely understand that unfortunate circumstances can happen, but this office is more than incompetent. I would never recommend going here for anything.

Hidden billing. I paid my co-pay as requested. Two weeks later I get a bill for a additional payment. The only thing that I had done was a cleaning and x-rays which are both covered services under my dental insurance. I will be canceling my future appointments and researching other dentists in the area. This one is too franchised.

I didn't have to wait longer than 5 minutes and my cleaning went well, and didn't take long at all, so far it's been good going to the dentist here.
