Ethan Payne suffered serious burns in a 2020 car accident, which claimed the life of his younger brother, Caden. But thanks to his extraordinary commitment during rehabilitation, Payne has returned to playing football at McPherson College in central Kansas.

The Rehabilitation Hall of Fame recognizes achievements of patients who have overcome significant medical challenges, and it celebrates the efforts of the care team that helped them on their journeys.

While the world sat in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ethan Payne prepared to play football on a scholarship to McPherson College in central Kansas. He was a good student who enjoyed spending time with his family, playing the saxophone and working out.

On June 6, 2020, Ethan was involved in a car accident that took the life of his younger brother, Caden, and severely injured Ethan. He was emergently transported to the burn unit at The University of Kansas Health System.

Ethan spent 2 long months on the burn unit at our health system. During that time, he underwent many skin graft surgeries and endured excruciating pain. He transferred to our health systems rehabilitation unit in August 2020.

When Ethan arrived at rehab, he was able to walk but was unable to stand fully upright due to the burns on his stomach and back. The burns on his face made it difficult to open his mouth to talk and chew. Basic activities like going to the bathroom, dressing and grooming were challenging due to the burns and grafts on his arms and hands.

Ethan was dedicated to recovery and gave his best effort every day. He worked with physical, occupational and speech therapists to restore his range of motion and return to his daily activities. His nursing and physician teams worked to manage his pain and ensure the proper healing of his wounds.

His recovery has been remarkable, although challenges do still exist. He is unable to fully straighten his right elbow and has difficulty regulating his body temperature. A radial nerve injury does not allow him to actively move his left wrist or fingers.

Despite these challenges, Ethan has returned to college and is playing football as a linebacker. He continues to grieve the loss of his brother but enjoys spending time with his family when he is back in Kansas City.

We thank Ethan for the lessons we have learned from your story: to cherish every day with our loved ones, to persevere through adversity, and that independence and happiness are still possible after loss and injury.

Complete lack of compassion, they could care less about patients health, all they care about is money. I had radiation treatments that caused a lot of dental problems because of where my cancer was located. These people just do not care..cash up front or see ya later!

I have had filling last for over 40 years. I work for KU and I went to KU Dental for a long time. the new dentist that told me i need a filling replaced, did a new filling. the new filling developed a whole in it quickly. I went in and they told me they would fix it for free because of the filling being new. So i went to get it fixed and they said a crown should have been done in the first place and they suggested that for the fix. my assumption was since they said they would fix it for free that that would be what ever was done to fix it. I received a bill for 530$ i asked what that was for and they said since i didnt have them just do filling that i had to pay for the crown that insurance did not cover. So i will pay the bill but i suggest that no one trust their work or what they say. I was actually friends with most there because i supported their systems and that was part of why i went there. Because they do below par work, you will be gambling with your results. i am just very disappointed . i should have kept the 40 year old filling that had nothing wrong with it

I have gone to this business for several years. Everyone I have encountered has been pleasant and professional. Everything they do is high quality. They go out of their way to make the patient happy. Their price structure is extremely fair. I came here after a bad experience with an expensive dentist and will continue to come to KU Dental for all my dental needs.

They make prices up talk down to you like a little kid totally unprofessional. Tried to ruin my credit with false claims. Lie straight to your face even with emails to counter claims

I always thought I hated going to the dentist, until going to see Dr. Grubis. The dental assistants are nice and friendly and Dr. Grubis is always very welcoming. I highly recommend.

This place is racist! Do not go here. They do not want to services blacks and or people of color. I have reported them to the necessary authorities. They do not deserve any stars. But had to select one to submit this post. Sincerely, I was refused service.
