Korsmo Family Dental - General dentist in Tacoma, WA

Dr. Lars Korsmo was born and raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, having grown up in both Seattle and Mount Vernon. He attended college at Western Washington University in Bellingham, earning a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biochemistry with a minor in Organic Chemistry. He then graduated dental school at the distinguished University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2007. Upon graduating, he & his wife, Bailey, chose the charming neighborhood of North End, Tacoma to raise their family. Here, he has spent the past 14 years providing high quality and compassionate dentistry in and around Pierce County until finally fulfilling his dream of practicing in the North End. Dr. Korsmos passion for building lifelong relationships with his patients is only equaled to his devotion for providing the highest quality of care. He believes that patients are people first and that compassion, communication and education are essential in achieving optimal treatment. In all of his career success, he is most proud of the trusting relationships hes built over the years and what better place to be now, than in his very own neighborhood. With their son, daughter and 2 golden retrievers, they are absolutely in love with this community. If you dont see Dr. Korsmo walking to and from the office, you might find him with his family on the slopes at White Pass or on the ferry out to Anderson Island. Be sure to say 'hi' if you see him around town!

The team at Korsmo Family Dental believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons' risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the team at Korsmo Family Dental work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Tacoma area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team at Korsmo Family Dental can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

A. Primary, or 'baby,' teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

A. First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

A. Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

A. Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child's primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

A. Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

A. There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Filling cavities is one of many services that a family dentist provides. Cavities are holes in teeth that occur due to tooth decay. However, if the decay is caught early, it may be possible to reverse it before a cavity forms. Understanding how and why tooth decay happens may make it easier to learn how

Tooth decay may seem unavoidable, but there are many things that can be done to prevent it. Read on to learn about the long-term effects of tooth decay. It is extremely important to make a conscious effort on a day-to-day basis to maintain good oral health. When the oral cavity as a whole is healthy,

When it comes to preventive dental care, the approach is two-fold. First, it involves going to the dentist for regular checkups and performing any recommended follow-up treatment. Second, good oral health habits are crucial for keeping the body in good working order. For people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis, keeping up

Individuals who experience tooth loss often wonder which is the better tooth replacement option: dental implants or dentures? Both options come with advantages and disadvantages, and the truth is that neither is right for everyone. To decide which is right for you, carefully weigh the pros and cons of each option.A denture is a removable

If you live in Tacoma or the local area, you can benefit from a teeth whitening procedure at our local dental office. At Korsmo Family Dental, we are known for improving the appearance of our patients' smiles. We are a cosmetic dentist and has multiple ways for doing so. We often recommend a teeth bleaching procedure because it is by far the easiest way to transform your smile. After cleaning your teeth, we can complete this procedure in time for a special event or as part of your regular oral health routine.

People have their teeth whitened on a regular basis so that they can look and feel great. As people age, it is common for teeth to become dull and yellow. This is in part due to age itself and also due to what a person eats and drinks. Drinking coffee, tea and wine, for example, can stain your teeth. Smoking and eating foods that contain food coloring can also stain your teeth. Brushing immediately after eating and drinking can help to prevent stains but is typically not enough to remove the risk entirely. Fortunately, stained and yellow teeth don't have to stay that way.

There are several types of teeth bleaching that you can try. People typically start by using whitening toothpaste at home. This can help to brighten your teeth but is typically not enough to actually whiten them. We recommend toothpaste as part of an overall teeth whitening treatment but not by itself. After professional whitening, the toothpaste can help your teeth stay bright.

Many people may try over the counter solutions like whitening trays or strips. These treatments work but not as well as professional solutions. As with most things, what you buy in the store is simply not as strong as what you can get from a medical professional. Additionally, store bought whitening trays are designed to fit everyone's teeth, not your teeth specifically. This means that they can become loose, and the solution can leak, leading to gum irritation.

In our dental office, we also recommend whitening trays. This type of procedure is effective and puts patients in control over how white their teeth become and how often they are whitened. We start by taking an impression of a patient's teeth. We then use this impression to create customized whitening trays in a dental lab. They fit securely around teeth and will not leak solution into the mouth. This is an ideal way for patients to whiten teeth because once they are created, they can be used at any time. Patients are provided with a whitening solution to use at home, and the trays need to be worn for a couple of hours every night for a week or more. Once teeth have reached the perfect shade of white, a patient can stop wearing the trays. This portable solution can be taken anywhere, making it possible for people to whiten teeth while on vacation, business trips or after moving to a new city.

When a whitening solution is applied to the teeth, the hydrogen peroxide inside of the solution penetrates through the enamel. It then starts the oxidation process where molecules are transformed to reflect less or no light. This makes them appear colorless, and teeth appear white. This process is typically extremely effective for eliminating stains and can be repeated frequently.

On occasion, the stains are too strong for a teeth bleaching procedure to work. When this happens, we can provide an alternative treatment. For example, patients in Tacoma can have dental veneers placed on the surface of teeth in order to cover dark stains. This is often preferable for patients that smoke since veneers are stain resistant and won't yellow quickly like natural teeth. Still, it is wise to try a teeth whitening procedure first, before starting a cosmetic one.

At Korsmo Family Dental, we also recommend that patients have their teeth whitened before having other dental procedures completed. Most of the materials that are used in dental restorations or for cosmetic purposes are stain resistant and bleach resistant. For example, a dental crown won't stain or bleach but should maintain its initial coloring with time. When a crown, veneer, bridge, or implant is created in a dental lab, they are created to match the shade of the surrounding teeth. If the surrounding teeth are yellow, these restorations will be created in a yellow shade. If the surrounding teeth are a brilliant white, the restoration will be as well. This makes the timing of teeth whitening procedures important. If you live in the Tacoma area and are interested in a dental restoration, schedule your teeth whitening procedure first.

A. Sensitivity from tooth whitening is always transient. If there is any sensitivity caused by the whitening, it goes away within one to two days after the treatment, and the patient returns to the state of sensitivity he or she had prior to starting the whitening process.

A. Typically you can expect whitening to last from six months to two years, although some studies report results lasting up to 10 years. Avoiding red wine, coffee, and smokingall of which can cause staininghelps preserve the results.

A. Tooth whitening has little or no effect on restorative materials such as porcelain or crowns, but it may temporarily reduce the bond strength between enamel and composite restorations. This is why it is a good idea to check with your dental professional before beginning any course of tooth whitening.

A. Products developed from carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, and urea (substances found in every human cell), should be used cautiously to alleviate concern. Those who have issues are the ones who don't follow instructions and overuse the products for months or years.

It is normal for teeth to yellow or become stained over time, but teeth whitening can return a smile to its original brightness. The American Association of Orthodontics reports that more than 30% of Americans are unhappy with their smile. Getting teeth whitened is a simple, easy process that can help anyone regain confidence in

For many people hoping to have a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening is a healthy option. In-office visits use bleaching agents to achieve lighter and faster results than over-the-counter treatments. However, this use of more potent agents means patients should consider their current dental history before deciding on professional whitening treatments. It is important to weigh

Getting dentures is the most affordable way to restore lost teeth. These removable dental replacements are easy to acquire as well. Upper and lower dental replacements are custom-fit. Your dentist can recommend them under the right conditions. If you want to know when dentures can replace missing teeth, here are the details.Dental implants are the

Friendly, compassionate staff. I'd been seeing Dr Korsmo for years. A few years ago he left the practice where I'd been seeing him. The care I got from that practice after he left was very disappointing. I decided to google Dr Korsmo. Even though his office is quite far from my home he and his staff are definitely worth the drive!

Always friendly and welcoming. The waiting area is always clean and quiet. The bathroom is sparkly clean and up to date. There are disposable toothbrushes to use prior to your appointment if you need one. I have never had to wait past my appointment time. The employees are all friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. Dr Croasdill is friendly and kind. A very gentle touch and explains everything and answers all of my questions. He is extremely knowledgeable. The exam areas are very clean and have all the latest equipment. Competitive prices but quite frankly I come here for the wonderful people at this office. Great work on my teeth and I had needed quite a bit of work. I am extremely satisfied with this team.

I appreciate that he was conservative in his care. "We will continue to watch...." There is no doubt the care is patient-based based upon current needs. We are very happy with Dr. Korsmo's office!

I filled our the form on the website. I received an email to call the office for new patient inquires. They were nice to call back to get my info and said they would call back shortly. When they called back, I was told they would put me on a waiting list because they were short staffed and it would be 3 or 4 month wait time because their current patient come first. They did not offer to schedule an appointment 3 or 4 months down the road. They then emailed me a list of 3 other reputable providers in the area and wished me Good Luck. it would have been nice to know up front that their was a wait time so I could make in informed decision and not waited their valuable time.
