Oregon has one of the highest cavity rates in the country but with our enthusiastic and compassionate approach on pediatric dentistry, we can work together to keep your child comfortable and healthy whilehaving fun in the process.
With over 30+ years of combined pediatric dental experience, Dr Brandon and Dr Kat have created an entertainingdental office that your child will love: with TVs on the ceiling, prizes for all ages, iPads and arcade games throughout the office. Most kids count down the days until they can come back to Kona Kids & some dont even want to leave! Keeping childrens health in mind, our office is mercury free, BPA-free and gluten-free.
Dr. Brandon Schwindt, or Dr. Brandon to his patients, grew up in Oregon, just east of Salem. He received his biology degree at the University of Oregon and later attended Oregon Health and Science Universitys School of Dentistry where he met Dr. Kat.
During his time in dental school, he discovered his talent for working with children. After graduating with honors from OHSU, he moved to Charleston, SC to complete his pediatric dental residency. Following gradation, he received the Richard C. Pew Award, for scoring in top three percent in the nation on his pediatric board exams.He currently serves as the President of The College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a nationaldental education organization.
After returning to Portland, Dr. Brandon became associate professor of Pediatrics at OHSU dental school and was later selected by his pediatric colleagues to serve as the President of the Oregon Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. In 2009, the Oregon Dental Association and Governor Kulongoski chose Dr. Brandon to serve on Oregons Board of Dentistry. He was then reappointed by Governor Kitzhaber in 2012. Recently, he was elected to President of the Oregon Board of Dental Examiners.
Following a two year course of study and case presentations, Dr Brandon achieved Board Certification by the American Board of Laser Surgery. He is the only pediatric dentist in Oregon and the only dentist in Portland with this level of certification. He works with many local speech therapists and lactation professionalsto help children with tongue and lip ties. In his spare time, Dr. Brandon enjoys skiing, hiking and camping with the family: Colin, Duncan, Dr. Kat, and their dog Max.
Its so wonderful to give children positive dental experiences, and at Kona Kids weve created an environment that makes all kids from the teenagers to even the youngest patients feel comfortable. Dr. Kathryn Bowman, Dr. Kat to her patients, is a native Oregonian who grew up in nearby Woodburn. She attended the University of Portland, graduating cum laude. Dr. Kat received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Oregon Health and Sciences University, graduating with high clinical honors in 2002. While at OHSU, Dr. Kat was chosen to be a member of OKU, awarded only to those individuals in the top ten percent of their class. She then went on to complete an advanced training in dentistry (AEGD) with a special emphasis on childrens oral health at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston. With Dr Kats diverse dental background from working with children and adults, she is our 'permanent tooth and esthetic expert here at Kona Kids.
Outside of work, Dr. Kat enjoys spending time with her two boys, whether it be hiking outings with their Brittany spaniel or swimming at the pool. She also enjoys reading the classics and trying out new cooking recipes.

We have been seeing Dr. Brandon and Dr. Kat for about 5 years now. They are great! They love questions, explain what they see, alert you to anything that needs attention and are both super nice. We came from another dentist who recommended surgery and unkind ways to get my son to stop thumb sucking. Dr. Brandon disagreed with the surgery and got us through the thumb sucking phase without any negativity. My kids both look forward to seeing the dentist (and love the prizes). The office staff and hygienists are always wonderful and make us all feel at ease. We have moved across town but aren't even thinking about changing. I trust them completely!

From the moment we walked in the door until the moment we left we enjoyed our time at Kona. There's a giant fish tank and even a movie area in the waiting room. The assistant was so sweet and explained everything to my child, the doctor was also very nice. I'm sure my child will want to return for the next checkup, bc when we left she said can we go again. I'm thankful that the dentist will be a good experience instead of a scary one. Thank you Kona! Highly recommend.

Dr. Brandon, Dr. Kat and everyone at Kona Kids Dentistry is amazing with my children!! Anyone who can make a three year old comfortable getting his teeth cleaned and x-rayed is a hero in my book. Thanks for creating such a warm and welcoming environment that encourages my little children that the dentist is a FUN place to go!

Dr. Brandon and his team are unbelievable. Following a visit, he texted to check on my daughter, and provided follow-up advice after hours. The care that Dr. Brandon gives his patients is rare and so valuable for parents who never want to see their children scared or uncomfortable. We're so lucky to have Kona Kids in our community!

I don't even know where to begin.... Kona Kids is absolutely incredible! From the front office, to the hygienists, to Dr. Brandon, EVERYONE is so friendly, patient, and kind! We drive an hour to go to Kona Kids because the quality of care is above and beyond! My 4 year old had a rocky start to his dental journey at a different pediatric dentist office where he was traumatized and very anxious to ever go to a dentist again. After that first experience, we got a second opinion and were then referred to Kona Kids. From the first consult appointment, I knew I could trust Dr. Brandon and his staff to take care of my son. They were just so calm, understanding, and patient with him!! The procedure my son needed included IV sedation and the anesthesiologist was also excellent - answering any and all of our questions! The procedure went smoothly and my son had a very positive experience. Dr. Brandon even took the time to text me that evening to check on my son and sent him a special gift in the mail! We've now been several times between the first consult, the big procedure, cleanings and fluoride treatments and the progression my son has made is incredible. He went from completely scared and clinging to me, to completely excited to go to the dentist! Now he jumps up in the chair by himself and opens his mouth and sits perfectly still. And that is ALL thanks to the remarkable staff at Kona Kids! I can't sing their praises enough! If your little one is nervous or has had a difficult time elsewhere, I'd highly recommend trying out Kona Kids. Thank you Kona Kids for everything you have done for our family!

Dr. Brandon and his team are great! Brought my daughter in to get checked out after she fell and got stitches in her mouth. He made sure her teeth are fine and reviewed how to care for her mouth while it heals. They got us in an hour after I called. Quick appointment and great care!

They are so good with kids! My daughter came in at 3 years old terrified, now at 3.5 years old she asked if we could go back again soon! The people are great, the atmosphere is wonderful, and Dr. Brandon is amazing!

Love Kona Kids Dentistry! Came here after another dentist recommended starting orthodontic intervention for my 4 year old. Felt that was a little young so came to Kona for a second opinion. The entire staff is warm, welcoming and communicative. Dr. Brandon disagreed with the rec for orthodontics and has been patient with ALL my questions and need for info. It's clear that he basis decisions on what is best for his patients and not just what is best for his pockets.
