Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specialists who have completed a four-year, hospital-based surgical residency, this after an undergraduate degree, and then four years of dental school. Some (as in the case of Dr. Emery) elect to earn a medical degree. Although the great majority of the procedures are performed atan oral surgery practice, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are also qualified to be on staff at area hospitals, allowing the more complex procedures to be performed in that setting.

At Knoxville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, an operating room built to the same standards as a hospital OR is available to the patient. Patients can have their surgery safely performed under anesthesia, as Drs. Wooten, Emery, and Manuel have extensive anesthesia training and are licensed by the Tennessee Board of Dentistry to administerIV sedationand general anesthesia.

Knoxville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - Oral surgeon in Knoxville, TN

The scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery is extensive. Besides the anesthesia component, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the most qualified in dentoalveolar surgery (extraction of teeth, wisdom teeth surgery, orthodontic surgery such as exposure of unerupted teeth, etc). Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are also the leaders in dental implant surgery, having placed the great majority of implants over the last 30 years. Management of facial trauma has been an area in which oral and maxillofacial surgeons have excelled.

Our knowledge of the facial and dental anatomy, and how all of these anatomic components interact, has placed our specialty at the forefront of treating facial trauma. Reconstruction of the jaws, both electively, and after trauma or cancer surgery, also falls in the domain of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Other areas within our scope of practice include TMJ surgery, management of maxillofacial infections, treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) and a variety of facial cosmetic procedures.

Doctor Josh Manuel did a great job, if it was he and the service only, this would have been a glowing 5 star rating, but the billing portion of the operation leaves much to be desired. Upon scheduling the service, we paid what the office said would be our portion of over $3,600.00, 6 months after the service we received a bill for over $7,000.00, removing the insurance discount in addition to the late billing. This shows a lack of integrity in the billing practices. We previously had spent over $20,000.00 on other work and there was no issues, amounts were presented correctly and no further issues.

Dr. Emery was incredible and so was his staff. Getting my wisdom teeth out wasn't as bad as I expected because they did such a wonderful job, he even called me at 8pm to check and make sure I was okay. 10/10

Dr. Manuel is a fantastic oral surgeon and the staff assisting him during the procedures are amazing too! At first I was extremely nervous considering the situation but let me tell you they are all so top notch and comforting that by the time my second surgery came around I was as cool as a cucumber!

The doctors/assistants are great and the staff is friendly but good luck getting them to file an insurance claim. I asked repeatedly (4 times - 3x in persona and once over the phone) and they never did. Left me having to pay hundreds out of pocket since I couldn't apply for a reimbursement thru my HRA. Wouldn't recommend unless you're okay with paying out of pocket.

I saw Dr. Manuel a few weeks ago for the first time after having years of jaw stiffness, pain, and locking. Dr. Manuel was one of the most compassionate and down to earth physicians I have ever met- when you grow up with lupus and a disease that paralyzed you, the jaw can seem like a trivial body part to be complaining about but he made me feel like it was just as important as anything else. By the end of the first visit i had an xray, MRI scheduled with a plan of what comes next. I felt relieved knowing I was in good hands. By the following week I had the MRI, the results, and surgery scheduled as my jaw was found to be displaced. I showed up for the surgery very nervous but the nurses made it feel like no big deal! there was no waiting around- I signed in, got called back, got an IV started, had some good conversation that I hardly remember and woke up in 0 pain! Went home, rested, recovered, and just had my follow up appt! We have a plan if my jaw locks up again and I dont have to come back until that happens. EXTREMELY PLEASED, THANKFUL, AND BEST OF ALL BETTER! Please see Dr. Manuel if you are having TMJ issues- you wont regret it!

I was very nervous when I went to Dr. Emery for a tooth extraction, because my tooth was in terrible shape, and I feared a complicated and painful experience, possibly involving uncomfortable surgical procedures. Dr. Emery was very personable, which put me at ease, explained the procedure in simple, straightforward terms, and quickly and efficiently removed the tooth with a minimum of discomfort. The after-care was explained thoroughly, and I am happy to say I have had no unexpected pain or inconvenience whatsoever. Since I found the administrative staff also helpful and efficient, I would give the entire practice my highest recommendation. Thank you Dr. Emery!

I went to this office due to an impacted wisdom tooth. I was very nervous about having to have it removed. Dr. Manuel was very sweet and professional and explained everything to me and was very honest with what he thought would be my best plan of action for my tooth. He did the removal today and we ended up removing three wisdom teeth as we had discussed at my first consultation and I must say his staff made me at ease from start to finish and he came in before I was put under and made sure to explain one more time the plan of action we had agreed on previously and to make sure I knew exactly what he would be doing. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the nurses that got me prepared for the surgery however both was amazing and explained every step that they was doing and they talk to me to help ease my nerves. I would highly recommend Dr.Manuel and his team for any oral surgery that you may need. You will not be disappointed.

After two different experiences with two different doctors at this practice I must tell the world that this is THE PLACE TO GO! Dr. Wooten and Dr. Manuel have been the two docs I have been fortunate enough to see when I needed help, and both have been exceptional. From the front desk to the exit door, the entire staff is professional, courteous, efficient, and reassuring. As a retired RN with years of experience in an OR setting, I can vouch for the exceptional standard of care offered by Knoxville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I have had excellent results from both my oral surgeries, also, so that speaks for itself. I highly recommend this practice!

Dr. Emery is wonderful oral surgeon and I highly recommend him. I was planning for tooth extraction, bone graft, and implant but had extreme high anxiety due to a low platelet disorder that I live with. Dr. Emery is also a medical doctor and he gave me confidence to proceed with my hematologist first. Then Dr. Emery coordinated (on his day off!) and successfully performed my oral surgery. No pain and no complications. Dr.Emery has a very caring manner and I appreciated his personal follow ups and that of Kathy. I highly praised him to my hematologist Dr. Hanna.
