I was born in Helena, Montana, and lived there until I graduated from Carroll College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. I loved everything about Helena and Carroll College, especially the small-town atmosphere and friendly environment. After graduation, I was fortunate enough to meet my wife, Sandy Owen. We soon moved to Minneapolis, where I attended the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Although dental school and the weather were challenging, I survived both and graduated with high distinction. Sandy and I soon moved again, this time to Louisville, Kentucky, where I had been accepted into the orthodontic residency program at the University of Louisville. Those were good years as well, as I spent time learning my trade, enjoying our early married years with lots of time together and marveling at how much deep frying was employed in Southern cooking.
I was introduced to orthodontics during dental school by my older brother, Bryan, who is also an orthodontist. He invited me to visit the schools orthodontic clinic as often as I could. It was in the orthodontic clinic that I knew I had found what I really wanted to do with my dental training. This career lets me work with both kids and adults and challenges my brain daily to respect that each case is unique, and since nearly all my patients quickly lose any fear they might have had about treatment, my staff and I get to spend most of the treatment time getting to know our patients and putting as much fun into the process as possible. I have a fantastic staff and great patients, and it is not an exaggeration to say that I love to come to work because I get to work each day with so many extraordinary people. On top of that, Im lucky enough to see the work I do positively impact my patients, and I often get to enjoy watching my patients confidence and self-esteem grow as their treatment progresses.
Sandy and I chose to settle in Washington because it was near our families, was stunningly beautiful, and allowed us to get outside and get active or stay inside with our books, guilt-free, on really rainy days. We have enjoyed our years here in the Snoqualmie Valley, and we look forward to raising our two children, Anika and Carter, in the shadow of Mt. Si. In my free time, I enjoy playing with my kids, running 5Ks with less-than-stellar times and trying in vain to catch up on lost sleep.
But it is more than just offering the best technical orthodontic care at Kirby Nelson Orthodontics we focus on each patient like they are a part of our family, celebrating every success along the way.

I absolutely can't say enough about how friendly and highly skilled the staff here are! I had a lingual bar that another not so great orthodontist put in a couple of years ago suddenly break off on one side---it was making eating normally impossible and of course the guy in Seattle who put it in could not see me for a week. I called Cascadia Smiles and explained my predicament---even though they were busy, they worked me in that same day and fixed it in no time! I will never go to another orthodontist again!!! Thank you all SO MUCH for your kindness and expertise!

Dr Nelson truly enjoys his work, and it shows! Throughout my treatment plan I felt in great hands. He and his staff are all friendly, knowledgeable, and clear about what they're doing each visit. If I had to get orthodontic work again, I would absolutely come back here.

Kirby Nelson Orthodontics went above and beyond for me! I was a patient of theirs starting around 10 years ago, and after getting my braces off and receiving my retainers around 7 years ago I have worn them ever since. They finally cracked all these years later, however I live in AZ now. I visited family in WA a few weeks ago and while I was there decided to make an appointment the day before flying back at AZ to see if I could possibly get some new retainers. Obviously there was a time constraint, but the team was able to get me in for a consultation quickly, look at my teeth, and make two new sets of retainers for me within a few hours! Not only did they work super fast so I was able to get the retainers before leaving, they did it all for free!! Not to mention all staff were super helpful and friendly. I truly appreciate the awesome patient service

We love Kirby Nelson! All staff, from appointment making to day of visit, were so friendly. Kirby takes his time with patients, is extremely thorough with his work and always wants to make sure we are aware with the treatment plan and any changes. His work in ortho is extremely detailed. He and his staff are the best!

If you're looking for excellent results, a professional, knowledgeable yet fun and friendly staff, you need to see Kirby Nelson Orthodontics! They not only inform you and care about you, but they go out of their way to make you feel like your smile is just as important to them as it is to you...because it is! They take pride in their work and will stay connected through out the whole process, even after your braces are off. They even have someone on-call 24/7 and will see you after hours/weekends and will treat you as a top priority no matter what. Stacy is a gem and has a heart of gold, as do all of the staff. Highly recommend to anyone needing orthodontic care.
