The American Association of Orthodontistsrecommends children be evaluated by an orthodontist as early as age 7. At this age, a child 's jaws are growing andthe child has'mixed dentition' - meaning they have both developing adult teeth and baby teeth.
Orthodontic treatment in young children is known as Interceptive Orthodontics orPhase 1. Your child should be evaluated to see if there are any problems that would indicate Phase 1 treatment, such as crowding or a cross-bite, that when addressed early on, can prevent more complex problems in the future.
Teens are ready for comprehensive orthodontic treatment onceall their permanent teeth have erupted. The teenage years are an optimal time for orthodontic treatment- whether it be braces or Invisalign treatment! Teeth in teenagers tend to move more predictably (i.e. faster) and there are certainbite problems that can be treated more effectively since teens are still growing. In later years, some orthodontic problems tend to be more difficult (and more costly) to correct since adult jaws and facial bones are fully developed. Also, it's likely your teenager has friends and classmates whoare also going through a similarprocess so they will not be alone! Once treatment is complete, your teenager can benefit from a confident, healthy, and beautiful smile for a lifetime.
