For decades, fluoride has been held in high regard by the dental community as an important mineral that is absorbed into and strengthens tooth enamel, and thereby helping to prevent decay of tooth structures.

Kids Teeth, LLC - Pediatric dentist in Rockville, MD

Fluoride is absorbed into structures such as bones and teeth, making them stronger and more resistant to fractures and decay. A process in your body called 'remineralization' uses fluoride to repair damage caused by decay.

Just drinking public water will provide a certain measure of fluoride protection. But for years, health professionals have endorsed the practice of supplementing our intake with certain dietary products, and topical fluorides in many toothpastes and some kinds of rinses. Certain beverages such as tea and soda may also contain fluoride. Certain kinds of dental varnishes and gels may also be applied directly to teeth to boost fluoride intake.

It is generally not safe to swallow toothpastes, rinses or other products containing topical fluoride. In rare cases, some people may be over-exposed to high concentrations of fluoride, resulting in a relatively harmless condition called fluorosis, which leaves dark enamel stains.

Anyone who participates in a sport that carries a significant risk of injury should wear a mouth protector, according to the American Dental Association. Sports like basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and volleyball all pose risks to your childs mouth and teeth. We usually think of football and hockey as the most dangerous to the teeth, but nearly half of sports-related mouth injuries occur in basketball and baseball.

A mouth guard can prevent serious injuries such as concussions, cerebral hemorrhages, incidents of unconsciousness, jaw fractures, and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw. Mouth guards are effective in moving soft issue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances.

Mouth protectors, which typically cover the upper teeth, can cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth. A blow to the face could also damage the brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances. If your child wears braces or another fixed dental appliance on her lower jaw, a mouth protector is available for these teeth as well. A mouth protector also provides a barrier between the braces and your cheek or lips, limiting the risk of soft tissue injuries. Although mouth protectors typically only cover the upper teeth, our office or an orthodontist may suggest that you use a mouth protector on the lower teeth if your child has braces on these teeth too. If your child has a retainer or other removable appliance, do not allow him to wear it during any contact sports.

  • Boil and bite Can be purchased at many sporting goods stores and may offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. They should be softened in water, then inserted and allowed to adapt to the shape of your mouth. If you dont follow the directions carefully you can wind up with a poor-fitting mouth protector.
  • Custom-fitted Made by our office for you personally. They are more expensive than the other versions, but because they are customized, they can offer a better fit than anything you can buy off-the-shelf.
  • Clean the mouth guard by washing it with soap and warm (not hot) water. Before storing, soak the mouth guard in mouthwash. Keep it in a well-ventilated plastic storage box when not in use. Make sure the box has several holes so the mouth-guard will dry. Heat is bad for mouth guards, so do not leave it in direct sunlight or in a closed automobile. Dont bend the mouth guard when storing. Instruct your child to not handle or wear someone elses mouth guard. Contact us if there are any problems with the mouth guard.

Braces today are smaller and less conspicuous and a bit more sophisticated than the conventional gun-metal wire straps. While they still utilize wire straps, newer appliances are much more comfortable. In fact, traditional metal braces can be replaced by clear braces and braces from behind.

Orthodontia is a multi-stage process. First, pretreatment records are made to make an accurate diagnosis. They include medical/dental history, clinical examination, plaster study models of teeth, photos of your face and teeth, and X-rays of your mouth and head. This information will be used to decide on the best treatment.

During the 'active treatment' phase, orthodontic appliances are in place. Appliances are adjusted periodically so that the teeth are moved correctly and efficiently. The time required for orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. Two phases of active treatment are somtimes needed for early orthodontic intervention. An important factor in how long your child wears braces is how well he or she cooperates during treatment.

Todays braces are generally less noticeable than their predecessors. Brackets, the part of the braces that hold the wires, are bonded to the front of the teeth. These brackets can be metal, clear, or tooth-colored. Wires that are used for braces today are also less noticeable. Todays wires are made of 'space age' materials that exert a steady, gentle pressure on the teeth, making the tooth-moving process faster and more comfortable for patients. In some cases, brackets may be put on the back of the teeth.

Patients typically wear braces for about 24 months, although this varies based on the severity of the problem, the health of the teeth, gums and supporting bone and how closely the patient follows instructions. Usually, adult treatment takes a little longer.

During the treatment phase of orthodontia, it is necessary to periodically re-tighten the interconnecting wires. This causes mild pressure on the brackets or bands to shift teeth or jaws gradually into a desired position. Your childs teeth and jaws may feel slightly sore after such a visit, but the discomfort is short-lived.

If your child wears braces, avoid some kinds of foods, such as sweets, chips and pop. Sugary and starchy foods generate acids and plaque that can cause tooth decay and promote gum disease. Cut healthy hard foods like carrots or apples into smaller pieces. And by all means, avoid sticky chewy sweets, such as caramel, which can cause wire damage and loosen brackets. Avoid hard and crunchy snacks such as popcorn, nuts, and hard candy, because these can break braces.

Oral hygiene is extremely important during the treatment phase of orthodontia. Insufficient cleaning while wearing braces can cause enamel staining around brackets or bands. Braces have tiny spaces where food particles and plaque get trapped. Brush carefully after every meal with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and check your teeth in the mirror to make sure theyre clean. Floss between braces and under wires with the help of a floss threader. Have your teeth cleaned every six months to keep your gums and teeth healthy.

Space maintainers can be very important to your childs long-term oral health. If your child loses a baby tooth early through guidance eruption, decay or injury, his or her other teeth could shift and begin to fill the vacant space. When your childs permanent teeth emerge, theres not enough room for them. The result is crooked or crowded teeth and difficulties with chewing or speaking.

Space maintainers are used to hold the spot left by the lost tooth until the permanent tooth emerges. The space maintainer might be a band or a temporary crown attached to one side of the vacant space. Later, as the permanent tooth emerges, the device is removed.

I recently relocated to Rockville and tried to find a new dentist for my daughter. I thought this place would be a great fit. However, the staff works at the front desk is extremely rude. I'm glad that I called in and dealt with the arrogant staff instead of my daughter. Not recommend this place.

This is a long overdue review, my two boys have been under the care of Dr. Alaluf and his team for almost 9 years at Kids Teeth. Hands down this is an amazing practice that Dr. Alaluf's drives with his spirit of care professionalism. I have witnessed his dedication to treat children with special needs kids and attend to the feelings of their parents. My older son who is now 16 went from being n anxious and difficult patient to having a normal experience at the dentist due to the patience and trust that Dr. Alaluf worked on with him over the years. I am at a point where I am able to wait in the waiting room while my son gets his cleaning done. He goes through cleaning, xrays, in clinic cavity work etc with minimal anxiety. This was a long process, however it speaks to the kind of care knowledge and trust that he and his team work towards . I can't recommend him and Kids Teeth enough!

Best Dental practice for children who fear going to the. Dentist. Diana and Dr. Sherman took their time in putting my Autistic daughter at ease and for the first time in Tiffany's five years of going to the dentist she was happy and not scared. The practice is clean with updated technology and tastefully decorated.

Followed Dr. Tan's plan to address many cavities of my 3 year old without negatively affecting his psyche. It was a gradual process that was perfect for my child. He has been going in for treatments which included numbing etc... with no problems. He actually goes in with a smile and leaves with a bigger one. Dr. Tan and the team at Kids teeth is great. I would recommend.

Today I went in for a service for one of my children. During the service it dawned on me how attentive and concerned the staff was with the level of comfort during the procedure for my child. It is because of today that I reflected about the length of time that we've been coming to Kids Teeth and how every time the staff, the assistants and the Doctors have always been so caring, informative and just overall GREAT. Thank you so much for being who you are ... GREAT PEOPLE THAT PROVIDE GREAT SERVICE. I'd give you 10 stars if that was possible.

My kids first dental appointment and everyone was kind and patient. While talking to the dentist, they kept my little one distracted by painting her nails. It was a good experience, overall.
