is a persistent feeling that there is not enough saliva in your mouth, making talking and eating difficult or embarrassing. Reduced saliva flow, which causes dry mouth, can damage mouth tissue, cause dental decay and contribute to bad breath.
Why is Saliva Important? Saliva lubricates and protects your mouth from infection by bacteria. It also coats your teeth and protects them from acids that can cause decay. Saliva helps with swallowing and chewing food. Some of the common problems associated with dry mouth include a constant sore throat, burning sensation, problems speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or dry nasal passages. Left untreated, dry mouth can damage your teeth. Without adequate saliva to lubricate your mouth, wash away food, and neutralize the acids produced by plaque, extensive decay can occur.
Symptoms Dry mouth sufferers often dont notice that they are suffering from dry mouth until their saliva flow has already dropped by 50%. Symptoms of dry mouth include: a feeling of soreness in the mouth; stickiness to the touch and cracking at the corners of the mouth; a red and parched mouth or pebbled look to the tongue; difficulty eating dry or spicy foods; food just not tasting like it used to; difficulty speaking; a tendency to wake up more often during the night; bad breath.
Dr. Fred Troxel was born in Allentown PA, to a Pennsylvania Dutch sea captain and an army nurse from Memphis (they met during the invasion of N. Africa). He attributes much of his success to this blend of German technical excellence and perseverance with southern gentleness and hospitality.
Five years as a counselor and scientist at Seacamp brought him to Big Pine Key during high school and college in the late 60s. After finishing at FSU, he moved on to the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, graduating in 1973. Continued visits to the Keys during the next few years, as he furthered his dental education, led him to believe the Keys were where he wanted to be long term. Forty years later, he believes it to be one of the best choices he ever made, right up there with choosing dentistry as a profession.
Fred has two children, Wilson and Corbin, born one year apart to the day in 1994 and 1995. His wife Rita, is the original founding member of Key Wests first professional theater, Greene Street Theater and recently retired as Film commissioner for The Florida Keys & Key Wests Tourist Development Council. Apart from dentistry and his family, Fred has a passion for fishing and snorkeling. He is the three time Bonefishing World Champion. Dont ask him about it if you are in a hurry.

There is a reason Dr. Troxell comes highly recommended- he does brilliant work. Staff in his office is wonderful, and contributes to a first rate experience. From the moment I walked in, I had the feeling I was in the right, most competent hands, and this helped me relax. His demeanour is highly professional, and he really took his time to do the work right and didn't rush through. results were exactly what I hoped for. He's just as much an artist as a dentist. Why didn't I know about Dr. Troxel and his wonderful staff sooner. What a gorgeous office... organized, clean and OH SO welcoming!! From the moment you walk into the office and are greeted by the professional and friendly front desk staff to the minute you leave, you are treated like a rock star. And don't even get me started on my fabulous, knowledgeable and most importantly gentle and accommodating Dental Hygienist, Yari....AMAZING chair side manor. I can honestly say that I've NEVER enjoyed a teeth cleaning as much as I did. Honestly, who knew there were so many ways a Dental Hygienist could make a person feel comfortable whilst removing gunk from ones teeth, lol. Along with Yari, Dr. Troxel was also impressive. He was friendly and went out of his way to explain everything to me, so that I understood all the dental jargon. And the best part.....the fees....very FAIR, and I was honestly QUITE surprised with how affordable they were after experiencing the TOP NOTCH service I was given. Here's the thing about Doc Troxel and his staff: they really care. They care that you're comfortable, they care that you're happy with your teeth, they care about your mental state and how your teeth influence that state, and they bend over backwards to make you happy. On top of all that, he's an artist with his restorations, and I was referred to him because he had the skill to deal with a particular oddity on one of my crown/root canals. Special shout out to Bonnie, who actually recognized me in public like a year after my procedure at Key Smiles. She was able to give me a solid course of action and immediate help with a problem I had recently. Good people, they have my implicit trust. Final note: I almost never write reviews, and usually forget, probably why it took me so long to write this one, but they really deserve the kudos.

My husband and I are so grateful for Dr Troxel!! Dr Troxel and his entire staff are so beautiful and awesome!! We were unable to receive any support from our local Key West dentists but they went over and beyond to assist my husband whom had radiation treatments to his jaw and their entire staff took the time to make his smile beautiful again!! Thanks for your help!! We love your entire staff!! A Team!! This team rocks! Very professional and caring!!

I was a very apprehensive dental patient before having Dr. Troxel work on me yesterday. I can't tell you how pleased I was with his care. The lack of pain associated with a root canal and an extraction was more than pleasing. Thank you for being so gently & conscious of my fear of dentist. No longer afraid

Words can not describe how fortunate I am to have discovered Dr. Troxel and his caring staff. Having lived my entire adult life with a bridge and finally reaching that point when it needed to be replaced. Dr. Troxel with his implantologist, Dr. Paul Berger, developed a plan and seamlessly saw it the entire way through. Not only do my teeth look great, but they can rip through anything! I've had Fred Troxel and his team working on my mouth for nearly 20 years and I went from total fear to actually looking forward to my visits. It is a relaxed place but with big city, smart results. I have moved from The Keys but still fly back to his office for any work - he is that good. Highly recommend.
