Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.
Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.
Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.
If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!
The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

Dr. Ken Morgan has been providing gentle & personalized dental care to the Metairie & New Orleans communities for over 20 years. He received his bachelors degree from the University of New Orleans & attended dental school at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Morgan is dedicated to ensuring that his patients receive the highest quality dental care possible. He has completed a year-long program for dental implants at the Medical College of Georgia & earned a license & certificate in oral conscious sedation. Dr. Morgan is the best dentist I've ever experienced , on many different levels. He is an expert in dentistry and the environment he leads in his practice engenders trust and positivity. His support staff and team delivers the same excellence. This is a feel good and positive environment. I had 2 implants and an extraction , in one appointment , no pain during the procedure and in my second day within his follow up care , no discomfort.......Highly recommended.

Be careful with this guy! I was in extreme paid on a Saturday. He was the only dentist open for the weekend. He had me come right in to examine my problems. He took xray but had no idea what was going on. He told me he could try to repair the teeth or pull them out.. I opted for him to repair my teeth. He did the procedure and sent me home. I'm no dentist but after the treatment I was still having the same pain as before. I had to go to him to tell him I was still in pain. He only offered me pain killers.. he was paid $3000+ . I ended up going to a different doctor and he told me the only way to solve my problem was to pull the teeth. He was also paid $3000+ and i haven't had a problem since. Point is Ken Morgan didn't know truly what to do. He wasnt definite in his diagnosis, the other doctor was definite. He should have known as a doctor those teeth were unrepairable.

I moved to New Orleans in July and needed a new dentist. I had a list to choose from and saw their website and was very intrigued so I set an appointment here for my 6 month cleaning. The energy here is AMBIENT everyone showed me how much they cared about me and showed concern as to how to help me get my teeth goals accomplished. I have been waiting for about 3-4 years to get my wisdom teeth removed and they have had the best price so I am able to afford it.. now get this off my wish list!! I am VERY picky and they have surpassed everything I was hoping for. The office is also very nice and modern - from what I can tell too is that they have updated technology.

Starting going here after a long break due to a dislike of my old dentist. They helped me get caught back up and are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that you're taken care of. Everyone is polite and I've always had positive experiences!

I can't begin to say enough positive things about Dr. Morgan and his entire staff! As someone with a 30 year phobia of the dentist, they made me comfortable and relaxed. They were patient and attentive, knowledgeable and caring. I will never go elsewhere!

It's been some years since I have done a check up on my teeth. I've seen this dental office often as I live nearby and decided to give it a try. I was welcomed as if I was known for years, everyone is very friendly and helpful. X-ray tech was super friendly and kept me updated on everything he was doing. Dentist who worked on my mouth was very gentle and made sure I was comfortable at all times. When I returned to get my treys done for my teeth, a tech named Molly was very nice and welcoming, and always kept an assuring smile on her. I noticed her beautiful smile and bright white teeth's. She was very professional and handle me with care. Her friendliness and humor had me relaxed and very comfortable. She answered all my questions very throughly and instructed me through everything I needed to bleached my teeth. The Receptionist was awesome, and kept me smiling and laughing. The vibe in there is something I love to feel when entering a new place especially when working on my teeth. I've found my last dental place to go too. Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome

The staff at Dr. Morgan office is amazing. They are friendly and courteous. They always go that extra step to make sure everything is done properly and complete. It's almost like you're visiting the Family. Great bunch of people.
