While University Hospitals doctors and nurses care for a patients body, its often a volunteer that can help bring a smile to that patients face. Volunteers are an integral part of the UH family, and are needed at all of our hospitals. A UH volunteer can contribute in many different capacities, whether its delivering reading or craft materials to our patients, reading to sick children or visiting with a therapy dog through our Pet Pals program. There is also a program designed specifically for teen volunteers, as well as behind-the-scenes volunteer opportunities, such as assisting with clerical work. No matter where your strengths lie, there is sure to be a volunteer opportunity thats perfect for you. Help make a difference and better the lives of patients at UH.

At UH, we know that great health care starts with understanding the needs of patients and families. That is why we have Patient and Family Partnership Councils (PFPCs). These volunteer groups partner with the hospital to enhance the health care experience for patients and their families.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 31st year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

Additionally, its Geriatrics and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery specialties were designated as high performing. U.S. News also named UH Cleveland Medical Center as high-performing for nine common adult procedures and conditions.

The rankings reflect the tireless efforts of our physicians, nurses, caregivers and volunteers in providing care to patients with the most serious and complex needs. For the 2020-21 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties and10 procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 134 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized best regional hospitals based on high performing rankings across multiple areas of care.

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

Last month, U.S. News & World Report ranked UH Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital among Americas Best Childrens Hospitals in eight pediatric specialties, four of which rank in the top 25. UH Rainbows ranked medical and surgical specialties include orthopedics, pulmonology, diabetes & endocrinology, cancer, urology, neonatology, nephrology, and gastroenterology & GI surgery.
