Dr. Shiflett graduated from University of Southern California in 1992 and continued her education in General Practice Residency at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, California. During her residency training, she had the opportunity to treat adult and children with special health care needs. After finishing her residency program, she practiced general dentistry and realized that her passion in dentistry was children and special health care need patients. She furthered her training in Advanced Pediatric Dentistry at University of Southern California and Miller Childrens Hospital at Long Beach and graduated in 1996. During her residency, she received graduate student research award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the outstanding resident award from the program.
Dr. Shiflett was a Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Southern California, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and worked with non-profit Childrens Dental Health Clinic in Long Beach from 1996-1998. Dr. Shiflett has been in private practice in West Covina since 2000.
Following dental school, she completed two additional years of post-doctoral training in Pediatric Dentistry. She was in the inaugural class of the new UCLA-Venice Community Health and Advocacy Training (CHAT) program which was integrated with the UCLA CHAT Pediatric Medicine training program. Dr. De Guzman is trained and qualified in the management of child behavior and the provision of care utilizing various sedation modalities as well as treatment of children with special healthcare needs.
As a UCLA faculty member in the department of Pediatric Dentistry, she currently enjoys teaching pediatric dentistry to the next generation of oral health care providers. She is also a member of various dental organizations including the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society, the California Dental Association, and the American Dental Association.
Dr. Kim earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychobiology from UCLA. He then attended the University of California, San Francisco(UCSF) School of Dentistry and graduated among the top of his class with a Doctor of Dental Surgery(DDS) degree. Following dental school, Dr. Kim completed a General Practice Residency at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut where he received additional training in pediatric dentistry, cosmetic,implant dentistry and oral surgery. Continuing to pursue his dream of becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Kim then embarked upon the final phase of his education at the University of Colorado, School of Dental Medicine. It was there that Dr. Kim studies alongside world leaders in the profession to receive his advanced specialty certification in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. While at the University of Colorado, Dr. Kim's innovative research also earned him a Master of Science(MSD) degree in Dentistry. Throughout the course of his entire education, Dr. Kim received numerous awards and honors for his academic excellence and superior patient care. Dr. Kim is Board Certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a distinction achieved by only a select few practicing orthodontists.
Having undergone orthodontic treatment himself, Dr. Kim understands firsthand the positive impact a healthy, confident and beautiful smile can make on someone's life. Practicing orthodontics over the years, Dr. Kim feels privileged to have helped many others receive the same benefits he received as a patient.
These are just a few of the questions surrounding the topic of early orthodontic treatment for children. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. At this point the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need orthodontic treatment.
Early treatment (also known as Phase-One) typically begins around age eight or nine (Phase-Two will begin around age eleven or older). The goal of early treatment is to correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems, such as underbite. Early treatment also helps to make room for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of extractions in the future.
Orthodontic problems such as crowding of the teeth, too much space between the teeth, jaw growth problems, protruding teeth, and bad bites can be inherited or caused by injury to the mouth, early or late loss of baby teeth, or thumb sucking habits.
Most children have lost all their baby teeth by age 13 and by the end of their teen years the jaw bones will harden and no longer continue to grow. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve tooth extraction and the possibility of oral surgery. As a child, receiving early orthodontic treatment can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.

We are not happy about it. Need help my kid to fix the cavity problem. Next appointment or recommend you pay more to look for other adults dentist. By the way, many adults dentist don't take kid under 16, my kid only 12

I currently take both of my kids to this dentist. The environment is always calming and the staff is always nice and helpful. The main dentist is my kids favorite, very patient and caring. I enjoy how she keeps the parents involved and educated on what is going on with our child's dental. She acknowledges concerns or questions.

I was running late to my appointment at 3 I called and asked if I can still make it the front office staff said she had 5 patients coming in at 3:30. That means that all 3 of my children had a 30 minute window. We have been going there for years and they can not accommodate me with afternoons because I work in the mornings. My som has a cavity and even thought I've been trying to get him an appointment the staff doesn't seemed to be worried about it it is April they said they are booked till august. They really should look into cutting down the number of patients they have because neglecting patients isn't professional.

Dr. De Guzman is amazing. My son needed two teeth extracted and he was very nervous. DR. De Guzman talked to him the entire time and during the procedure he thought he was getting his teeth cleaned. At the end he was confused when he learned it was done. Thank you, great job!

Horrible experience today. Rushed to my children's visit 2 at 3:30 & 1 at 4:30. Called to say traffic was bumper to bumper. Got there at 3:45 only to be told if 4pm visits show up they will be seen 1st and my kids might not be seen even the 4:30 visit. When asked if they can take my 1st child the receptionist said after if they have time. When I asked to reschedule the receptionist rolled her eyes. I understand not seeing my children scheduled at 3:30 but canceling all the visits because I'm late to 1 is crazy. Super unprofessional receptionist.

My son has not had the best time at previous Dental offices. But you all have changed that and he wants to go OFTEN!!! I want to say thank you! You all are professional kind and so very patient. Great job especially talking the kids through everything. My son is 6. Great Dental office.

Discovered this awesome pediatric dentist from Yelp, and have been coming here for a little more than a year now. The office always looks clean and nicely decorated for children. The ladies at the front desk and assistants are all really friendly and nice when greeting us at the front and throughout the entire visit. We really like Dr. Shifflett and how she interacts with the children. We like how she takes her time to explain everything thoroughly. She answers all of our questions and is always extremely patient. Overall she is the best pediatric dentist out there!
