Douglas Harman was born in Cumberland, MD. In 1977, he received his Bachelor's degree in Biology at West Virginia University (WVU). In 1981, Douglas Harman graduated from West Virginia University School of Dentistry with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.

Dentistry has always been a great passion for Doctor Harman. From 1984 to 1992, he had been working as a dentist in the department of corrections in the state of Virginia. He became the first dentist in the department of corrections to be certified in the correctional health profession in the state of Virginia.

Dr. Julie Baird Hawley was born in Valentines, VA. Her parents are Nelson and Rita Baird of Valentines, VA. She is married to Logan Hawley, of Durham, NC, and they have a daughter, Lily. They currently reside in Henrico, NC.

Dr. Hawley graduated as valedictorian from Brunswick Academy in 2005. She attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. While there, she participated in many volunteer activities at the University and in the surrounding community, including tutoring for children in the local school system and work at a dental clinic for children. Dr. Hawley graduated in 2009 with a bachelors degree in both Economics and Biology.

In 2009, Dr. Hawley moved to Richmond, VA to attend Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry on the Medical College of Virginia campus. While attending dental school, Dr. Hawley volunteered her time in many different service capacities. She participated in several Mission of Mercy, or MOM, projects to provide free dental care to those in need. Dr. Hawley also gave her time to provide free dental care to children during 'Give Kids a Smile Day' events. As a senior student, she was able to contribute to the education of sophomore students as a teachers aide. Upon graduation with a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery in May 2013, Dr. Hawley received an award of recognition from the dental school faculty for clinical efficiency, patient management skills, and steadfast pursuit of clinical excellence. She also was awarded the American Association of Endodontists Student Achievement Award for above average skills in the field of endodontics (root canals.)

Dr. Hawley is a member of the American Dental Association and the Virginia Dental Association. She has served as the president for the Southside Dental Society and is an active committee member with the VA Dental Association. She continues to volunteer her time and skills at MOM projects, RAM (remote area medical) clinics and Give Kids a Smile events.

Dr. Hawley and her husband are active members of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Gasburg, VA. They are passionate about fitness and compete in races around the area, including their favorite, the 'Brickyard 5-miler' in Lawrenceville, VA that the Rotary Club uses to fund college scholarships for local children. Dr. Hawley is a member of the Emporia Rotary Club and values 'Service above Self.'

Dr. Hawley loves practicing in Southside Virginia, where she considers home.' She feels that a small town is the perfect atmosphere to foster caring relationships with patients, and she looks forward to meeting you and meeting all of your oral health needs with a gentle and caring manner.

Brenda Diefert, office manager for Douglas W. Harman, D.D.S., PC. Brenda has been a member of Dr. Harmans staff since April 1997. She attended National Educational Center in 1990 and received her diploma in medical assisting. Brenda worked six years in the medical field prior to becoming a dental assistant with Dr. Harman.

Brenda was Dr. Harmans main assistant for three years before being promoted to office manager. Brenda enjoys working throughout the office, whether assisting the doctors or working with the office staff.

Brenda resides in Emporia, Virginia, with her husband Ron and their beautiful daughter Brysen. When away from the office Brenda enjoys spending time with her family, Brysen keeps her busy with school, dance, and church activities. Brenda and her family are an outdoor family; they are either in the garden, at the beach, or on Lake Gaston with family and friends.

They got me in a little early because I was in pain. I had a pain free experience getting a root canal. Everyone is friendly and do what they can to help.

Dr. Hawley is a very good dentist! I am the type of person that is truly scared to go to the dentist and she is very gentle and kind, which calms me.
