Dr. Jovita A Barcena is a 1982 graduate of the University of the East, Manila, Philippines. After graduation she opened two private offices in Manila. She was then offered a job working as a dental hygienist in Saudi Arabia. The hospital director observed how well she treated her patients, and after a few days she was asked not to only do teeth cleaning but also to do general dentistry. She was offered a dentist position, which involved one month of training at the Ministry of Health followed by a licensure exam that included three parts; an oral, practical, and written exam. She was the first Filipino dentist who was given a license to practice dentistry in Asir, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After getting her license, she was assigned to the main office in Jeddah, K.S.A. and it was there she trained for one year in Pedodontics (Children's Dentistry) and worked for five years in Orthodontics. In 1993, Dr. Barcena decided to join her family in the USA and decided to take the California State Board of exam to practice dentistry in California, which she passed in 1995. She worked at the Central Dental Care clinic in Covina, CA from June 1995-1996. Dr. Barcena decided to start her own private practice in Panorama City, CA in 1996.

At her Panorama City office, Dr. Barcena is a general dentist with special interest in Orthodontics and Cosmetic Dentistry. She also performs minor surgeries, non surgical gum treatment, and preventive dentistry. She loves attending dental seminars and always updates herself with the latest trends in dentistry.

I have one problematic dental condition, and had been treated by many dentists. I'm extremely blessed to find Dr. Jovita Barcena's dental office. Dr. Barcena, Dr. Ces, and Dr. Jackie, are quite gentle, knowledgeable, and they aim to save your teeth! Amazing expertise! The staff, Jannette, Lerma, Ripsy, and Veronica, are fun to interact with, the team always makes me feel relax, and I leave satisfied with all the treatments. I highly recommend their services!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Looking to improve your smile with braces or Invisalign? Or simply need to check up on your pearly whites? This is a one stop shop that you will not regret! I'm extremely pleased with the amount of work and dedication the whole team brings to have a positive environment for their clients. Dr. Barcena takes the time to explain the procedure and gives reasonable options. She's kind, knowledgable, and will not bill you for anything that's unnecessary. Unlike other dental offices. Overall, my experience with the team has been excellent for the past two years!

Best dental office ever! I have been going to Dr. Barcena since I got my braces in Junior High in the early 2000's and have been going ever since! I refer all my friends and family to this same office. Dr. Barcena is a perfectionist and will settle for nothing less when working on your smile! Because of her help, I LOVE to smile showing off my teeth! If you want a smile to show off and quality work, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Barcena and her friendly, professional team!

The best dentist I've ever had. I used to hate going to the dentist but they make the experience so painless and very much make you feel like family. Jeanette is always so welcoming and the doctors have the smoothest hands you hardly ever feel the shots they give you before a filling and they are very caring about making sure you always feel comfortable. Truly exceptional

I went to this dentist as it was the closest to my home. I have wisdom teeth coming in causing extreme pain. I mentioned this when called. When I made the appointment over the phone, the receptionist said they were having a special right now on cleanings and it was cheaper than the normal cost of the evaluation and suggested I make that appointment and the dentist will evaluate and go from there. I thought that sounded reasonable, so I went with that. I should have known right there that this office is a farce. But wait it gets better. So I show up on the day of the appointment, and the dentist actually thinks Im just there for a cleaning. The secretary didn't note anything about my actual reason for the visit. After I explained why I was actually there, they took an X-ray. She looked at it, saw that I had three wisdom teeth breaking through and that they all needed to be pulled. Duh...that's what I told her when I got there, so she needed to take an X-ray just to repeat to me what I told her to begin with. It isn't rocket surgery. So she then proceeds to point out the roots of the teeth needing removal are close to the nerve in the jaw. Another captain obvious moment there...and she says shes afraid to do the work because of this nerve. She wanted to refer me to a specialist. Mind you I am in so much pain I am literally rocking back and forth in my chair. She writes a referral to a specialist nearby, and tells me he does everything, he does all dentistry, and even has a pharmacy on location so it's a one stop shop to get anything done at all. She says she will do my cleaning after I get the work done and heal and they will note the account to reflect I already paid for the cleaning (which I did, remember the "special?"). So I make my appointment with the specialist. I show up to that appointment with my X-rays already faxed over. He takes one look in my mouth for about 10 seconds and says "The wisdom tooth isn't whats causing your pain. It's the tooth next to it, it needs a root canal." and to prove this he takes his metal instrument and gives a single tap on the tooth in question sending shivers of pain down my whole body. He didn't even need to look at my X-ray. Literally one glance and figured out the problem (the wisdom teeth are still needing removal but weren't the source of my pain). There is no reason Dr. Barcena shouldn't have been able to diagnose this properly. Well, there is one reason I will get to shortly. Anyway, so I ask the specialist when can we start. So heres where the problem went from lazyness from Dr. Barcena to downright borderline malpractice. The specialist, you know, the guy Dr. Barcena said does everything under the sun, DOESNT DO ROOT CANALS. He said he will take my wisdom teeth out, but that is just going to add pain from that on top of the pain from the tooth needing a root canal. I asked him why I was referred to him then, he said he didn't know. I asked if there is any reason Dr. Barcena should have legitimately referred me to him and he didn't know why she did, and even went and called her to ask. When he came back in the room he still didn't have an answer to that, and simply told me I would need to go back to Dr. Barcena and have her refer me to an Oral Surgeon. The visit with the specialist was 75$. He was kind enough however to write me a prescription for antibiotics and some 800mg ibuprofen, while simultaneously going into some long winded reason why he couldnt prescribe me opiates because the government is cracking down blah blah blah. I didn't ask for opiates. And even if I had, I have a legitimate need for massive pain relief. I'm not there doctor shopping for pills, I need a god damn root canal and three wisdom teeth pulled... Dr. Barcena is NOT a dentist. She may have her documents, but she doesn't PRACTICE dentistry. This place is a glorified teeth cleaning service and nothing more. At the first sign of actual dentistry needed, they refer to someone else (and incorrectly at that). DO NOT go here, even for a cleaning.
