Its more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have braces, so the teeth and gums are healthy during orthodontic treatment. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may require more frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning. Adults who have a history of gum disease should also see a periodontist during orthodontic treatment. Watch the two videos below on the proper care of braces during orthodontic treatment.
What can you eat? Lets talk about what you shouldnt eat! For the first day or so, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables. Before long, youll be able to bite a cucumber again. But youll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as youre wearing braces.
When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for 3 5 days. Take Tylenol or whatever you normally take for headache or discomfort. The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the braces. We will supply wax to put on the braces in irritated areas to lessen discomfort.
To successfully complete orthodontic treatment, the patient must work together with the orthodontist. The teeth and jaws can only move toward their corrected positions if the patient consistently wears the rubber bands or other appliances as prescribed. Lack of cooperation following instructions and damaged appliances lengthen the treatment time so please follow instructions.

We were referred by our family dentist. We had a great experience at Journey! I had mistaken our appointment time and they cheerfully adjusted and allowed us to still make the appointment happen! Dr. Hohlen and all the staff was incredibly kind, especially his technician (wish I remembered her name!) His advice on the right timing (a little down the road) for starting my son's orthodontic journey gave me peace of mind that there was no rush and everything was going to be okay. :) I deeply valued his honest insight for what was best for my son. Looking forward to our next visit! Highly recommend Journey!

Staff at front desk are a rude bunch instead of kindly addressing an insurance issue they have a bad attitude about it and this is the second time I have come here both times felt unwelcoming.

My experience with Journey Orthodontics was incredible. The communication was excellent, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and the work is incredible. The payment plan was straight forward and reasonable. But the best part...is my smile and my confidence. I personally saw Dr. Hohlen but I have known people who have seen the others with the same great results. 5 out 5 stars!

Dr. Hohlen and the team at Journey Orthodontics are excellent! As an adult Invisalign patient, they set clear expectations for duration of treatment and made appointments convenient for the work day. Just finished a orthodontic Invisalign treatment at the Journey Orthodontics location in Yankton. My "Journey" was relatively painless, very productive and definitely worth it!! Dr. Hohlen and staff are friendly , accommodating and always pleasant. I always felt as if I was the most important patient..... as I am sure every other client felt also , in that busy, efficient office . I highly recommend Dr. Hohlen , his staff and Invisalign!!

I can't say enough amazing stuff about Journey Orthodontics. From the whole staff to Dr. Brian Hohlen, they are all simply amazing. So personable and take the time to listen and explain everything. Both my girls have had orthodontic care here and I'm in my last stretch of Invisalign and the results have been nothing but amazing. Dr. Hohlen took over my care and helped me receive the smile I've always wanted! As an adult I started having problems with my teeth shifting and moving despite already have gone through braces as a teenager. He listened to what my concerns were and helped create a plan to to get my teeth moved back to where they belong! He never dismissed my concerns no matter how small or subtle they were. We did Invisalign and now I have the perfect smile! Thanks to the whole team at Journey!
