Dr. Jonathan E. Backer was born in South Korea where he lived until 11 years of age. His family came to the United States in 1979, settling in Bakersfield, California, where he was adopted by his father. School brought out the best in him and he thrived as a leader and an athlete while excelling in academics. He served as the Student Body President in high school and played football, basketball and track.
Dr. Backer worked as a dental lab technician during his college years before entering Loma Linda Dental School in 1996. He graduated in 2000 and moved to Eugene to practice dentistry. In 2002, Dr. Backer opened his own practice in Cottage Grove where he has been faithfully serving his patients to this day. He has been a long standing member of the Lane County Dental Society where he recently served as President.
Dr. Backer was honored to receive the Paul Harris Fellow award by the Rotary Club of Cottage Grove. Giving back to the community has always held a high priority in Dr. Backer's personal and professional life. He continuesto regularly volunteer his time at the South Lane Children's Dental Clinic. Dr. Backer also has supported many levels of sporting activities, drama and music programs in Cottage Grove.
Dr. Backer and his wife, Soorin, have been married since 1991 and have four beautiful children. His oldest son was married during the summer of 2013 and he and his wife are expecting their first child! Dr. Backer also takes an active role in supporting his wife, who is a published author and speaker, when she speaks at various Christian ministry events. He has recently taken the position of Head Coach to his youngest son's Junior High boys' basketball team for Kid Sports in Eugene. Though it's a new challenge, Dr. Backer is truly enjoying working with the boys and their families while spending quality time with his son.
When he's not busy serving the community and supporting his family, he can most easily found on the open road! He has been an avid cyclist for many years and races competitively. He enjoys all things outdoors, including snowboarding, skiing, golfing and target shooting. He also enjoys singing and you might just hear him humming along to the radio while you are in the chair! It's become a familiar and beloved sound in the office to the staff and to our beloved patients!
Emily began working with Dr Backer in February of 2007 as a dental assistant, in 2011 she made the transition to working as a front office coordinator to allow a more flexible schedule. She is happily married to Brandyn and together they have a blended family that includes 6 kids, all of whom are very busy and active. When they can they love to travel but most weekends and evenings she will be found throughout Oregon watching her kids play soccer, basketball and track. Born and raised in Cottage Grove she continues to be a familiar face.
Brittany first worked for Dr. Backer as a dental assistant aftergraduating from the LCC Dental Assisting program in 2005. She took a break to stay home with her kids and just recently returned to work for Dr. Backer at his Eugene office. She and her husband, Jeff, have lived in Coburg for thirteen years and have three sons. If Brittany isn't in the office or driving her kids to practice she's probably out in her garden. She's a proud 'Crazy Chicken Lady' but also enjoys her ducks, dog, and three cats.
Letty graduated from the LCC Dental Hygiene program in 1999 and has been working for Dr. Backer since 2005. She and her husband, Gary, have six grown sons, five daughters-in-law, and ten grandchildren. Her passion is spending time with her family on their McKenzie River property. Their home is the hub for many family gatherings and with a family that big there is always a reason to gather! In the summer they enjoy fishing for Steelhead, Salmon, and Trout from their drift boat and kayaking on the McKenzie.
Terra started working for Dr. Backer in December 2013. She received her Dental Hygiene Degree from Lane Community College in 1997. Terra has lived most of her life in Lane County and is a 4th generation 'Grover'. She lives in Cottage Grove with her son, daughter, and husband, Herman. She and her husband are passionate about supporting children and have fostered many kids throughout the past ten years. When she's not cleaning teeth you can find her getting creative and crafty or spending time with her family.
Lisette graduated from the LCC dental assisting program in 2020 and joined the Backer dental team after interning at our office. Shes wanted to be in the dental field since she was in 5th grade! Lisette was born and raised in Cottage Grove and enjoys hiking, running, going to the coast, and spending time with her family. She and her boyfriend, Alan, recently adopted their adorable fur baby, a black lab named Dixie! Lisettes energy and smile are contagious-we love having her with us!

Amazing Dr. and staff. This was my first time visiting this office and they were all very welcoming and conscientious of my care. My physical care and my financial/insurance options were very clear and billed accordingly.

My husband was super happy with his service Thursday. Went in with a broken tooth and an infection. They did the X-ray, pulled the tooth and set up a treatment plan that works with our busy schedule. Oh and they STAYED LATE to do it. Talk about exceptional customer service! Thank you Dr. Backer and the assistant who stayed to help!!

I've been going to Dr. Backer's office every 6 months since I moved here almost 5 years ago and I've never had a single bad experience. In fact, I'm always surprised by how much I actually enjoy going there. The front desk staff is always warm and friendly and will work with me when I want to make payments since I don't have dental coverage, the hygienists are gentle, thorough and get me out of there in less than an hour and Dr. Backer is always willing to stay and chat with me if I have questions or just want to shoot the breeze for a minute. I would totally recommend this office for your dental needs. Every single person I've encountered there has been great, without exception!

The low rating is not for the services of Dr. Backer who is largely an excellent practitioner, however, for a very unpleasant encounter with the office staff. What started as a relatively small misunderstanding escalated into a truly unpleasant conflict with simply the most disrespectful encounter I have ever had in a business environment. Ever. I am still aghast at this. I wish the office had taken steps to make reparations or resolve the matter but I am never going to go back.

I have been a patient of Dr. Backer for many years, as well as my husband, daughters and extended family. Not only is he an amazing dentist who genuinely cares about his patients, but he has an awesome staff with the same philosophy!!! From the girls in the back to the girls in the front office, they all care very much about each patient and their needs whether it be health wise or financially. ANYTIME we have needed something, we communicated this to them and they did whatever they could to make it work, always listening to our needs as well as concerns. This means the world to me and my family!! Thank you Dr. Backer and your wonderful staff!!!!

Very friendly but professional at the same time. Unlike some places I've been, he was not in a rush to get the job done and get rid of me. He was very concerned with any sort of pain I had during the procedure. I will definitely be coming back.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Backer's office. They are super friendly, professional and great at what they do. I've had fillings, teeth whitening, wisdom teeth pulled and many cleanings here and have always been 100% satisfied with the care and results I have recieved. The office staff is also really great with kids making them feel at ease, whether they are in the dental chair or just waiting for their parents. My family seriously loves this office, we always walk away with a smiles full of clean teeth!
